Alpha Protocol, however, I'd agree is an excellent game. If we ignore that the stealth gameplay isn't the strongest in the world but instead consider the excellent implementation of RPG mechanics. I appreciate how Thornton is not able to hit the on-button of a tumble dryer a few miles away, without at least placing some points into pistols. I also appreciate how certain dialogue paths, and the order of which you complete certain missions, will actually carry a small effect on other missions.

The writing is as solid as one could come to expect from Obsidian and Avellone -- Thornton is basically the entire spectrum of an absolute ponce, but he's fun to play, and he's got some intriguing dialogue with a few of the characters. Especially with Marburg. "You answer to a cardboard cut-out, half your age, with the fashion sense of a screaming child who spends hours on his ****** hair; I may be on the run, but at least I'm better off than some monkey in a suit who can't even talk and put his pants on at the same time." Quite brilliant taunts he has going. Adding unto that, Alpha Protocol also has one of the best characters ever to be voiced by Nolan North, namely Steven Heck.

I agree with you completely. Though not gonna check the vid cause I have not beaten the game yet. :P

I gotta admit that I really liked Fahrenheit. I also really, really liked Hevy Rain. Both games just somehow clicked with me. The characters, the atmosphere, and yes, to a certain extent the stories - loved it all.

I can't deny, however, that both are fundementally flawed. The at first somewhat intriguing plot of Fahrenheit just stops being a plot for the last third of the game and starts being some weird drug-induced psychosis instead. Just what the ****?

And in Heavy Rain there originally was a supernatural element, which explained quite a lot of the more mysterious things that happened. Only David Cage decided he didn't want to do supernatural in this game and cut the whole thing. Without, of course, replacing it or changing the rest of the story, which ended up just making no sense. Also great was the feature to listen to your current character's thoughts in order to get clues. Only that some of the player characters at times had secrets that would have given away important parts of the story... and yet the thoughts the player got to hear would at all times reflect exactly the facade the character presented to the game world. Lots of bad choices...

I started playing Alpha Protocol over and over again for the last years, but I never really made it very far. The clunky gameplay just frustrates me too much, which is a shame, because the setting, story and characters seem great and very much to my liking.

Agreed with it all. Except for AP.

Fahrenheit was really cool. One of the best characterization of the games I have ever seen and played. And yeah, gameplay till when you go to rescue someone from the Oracle`s grasp was awesome. After got a little down but still cool. I kind of was expecting a matrix like Ability though.

I really do need to get back to AP someday. Those that have dealt with my rambles know that I adore Avellone so very much (he's my go-to writer for a story I *know* will handle emotions in ways I feel them). The thing is, I only made it as far as the first mandatory hacking point. The mini-game gives me a migraine just by how my mind and eyes work. :( Not sure there's a way around the hacking points. Aside from that, I liked what I played of it.

Regarding Fahrenheit, I'm likewise of the mind that it was rather enjoyable until the last quarter or so went to complete terribad territory. Shame really cause when it was a murder mystery from both sides, I rather enjoyed it. Heavy Rain I do have a soft spot for, but I'm a sucker for "How far will you go for the one you love" type stories. It has its problems too but I overall felt it was the better game of the two options.

Sorry to disappoint you but, hacking computers and locks door are sorta a major part of the game if you want to go with stealth approach. And if you want to have open hands and minds during dialogues and missions and know everything and decide with open eyes and ears, hacking computers is a must.

But as said before, you can use EMP`s. But I use manual hack on everything to max out XP gain.

For Fahrenheit, i answered earlier.

Yeah.

The Sherlock Holmes games are great.

Forgot that.

Errr.. but Poirot levels of awesome? I'm talking about "NO F*CKING WAY WAS THAT THE MURDERER?" Awesome.

Seriously.

You will never guess who the murderer is with Christie's novels.

Ever read "And Then there were None" ??

*goosebumps*

Let's just say that the Killer isn't easy to reach at first without spoiling. He also happens to be one of my favorite villains of all time.

Got it. So far I have picked three or four games to get from this topic and enjoy exchanging comments about these two games with you guys. it is fun and enlightening.

The games being Sherlock Holmes series, Persona 4, Dreamfall The Long Journey and Republique Remastered.

Bet it won't beat Poirot.

Nothing ever does.

Not even Sherlock Holmes :-(

But 60% of my urge to play Persona 4 is just to interact with amazing characters again.

And Naoto.

She is the waifu I choose this time.

Can guarantee Dreamfall is an amazing game and so is its prequel.

Waiting on Chapters to be done so I can play it in one scoop.

I think Dreamfall was the last game I ever sat down and played its entirety in one day.

Figured as such. Shame really cause stealth is the way I prefer to go on these sorts of games. I just have a hard time mentally keeping up with the hacking mini-game, since there's so much quick flashing data and my brain and eyes just aren't so good at keeping up with it. Had a friend previously offer to beat the tutorial for me, but I forgot to send my save file. :P

Hacking door locks wont be much trouble as there is no flashing. But hacking computers, thats another story. It is tricky with so many numbers moving fast in dozens of raws and you have to find two fixed codes to unlocks the terminal. There is a trick in doing it though. If you like, I can tell you.

Please! If it isn't a bother. Thank you kindly. :3 The game has stayed on my "Blargh I wish I could complete" it list for years now but because I personally struggle with the computer hacking elements, I haven't been able to make progress. Ways to cheese things are always good in my book. :3

Do you even Planescape?

Yes. And how does that relate to the a QTE fest that is considered masterpieces?

Here is the trick. You see, the code you have to find is  fixed. Means that no number changes in them. So, instead of memorizing the whole number and going through all the rows, memorize the last two or three numbers and look for them. If you see you are running out of time, just hit abort and try again.

Blergh waifu. She's an excellent character though.

The plot isn't as strong as Persona 3 but it's got a better villain than Revolver Jesus, and the murder mystery was actually quite neat. Anyway, I suggest getting into the Metal Gear games before Persona 4. I urge you to play them already.

Meh, other than Civ 2 I think the opinion of masterpieces in gaming gets thrown out too much. Seems often enough that games with a strong narritive are labelled as such despite lackluster gameplay.

The only thing I remember from Indigo Prophecy is the guy getting super depressed if you messed up playing the guitar, and from Heavy Rain JASOOOOOOOOON.

I liked Alpha Protocol to a point - if you can get past the arguably lacking polish on the combat, it has great writing, unexpected forms of C&C, i.e. choosing one mission over another will mean guards and such will remember your actions. The timed-speech made it feel more realistic, reminded me of a very brief bit in a lesser known RPG called Rise of the Argonauts. Not a raving fan of the game, but I liked it. Enough to play it multiple times, at least.

Indigo Prophecy didn't do much for me outside of the first 5 minutes. The amount of bizarre storyline nonsense being thrown in was a big-turn off. It seemed very sloppy, even compared to Heavy Rain and Beyond

Doesn't the game at some point also just completely give up on trying to make any sense at all?

I think that was when the alien robot made of light showed up and tried to finger Lucas.

Planescape Torment.

Walking Dead season 1 and 2.

Life is Strange episode 1

Many visual novels.

The Wolf Among us.

Brothers - A tale of Two Sons.

Planescape Torment.

All better stories and you get more bang for your buck. Gone Home is a hipster's wet dream.
