My female Aeducan's romantic life sucked too. She was dumped by Gamlen and Alistair, and then she chose not to do the ritual... and, well, Alistair died.
Don't you mean Gorim?
Gamlen is Hawke's dirty old man of an uncle! ![]()

Yeah, I meant Gorim. Oops XD
It's like with films. Some prefer The Dark Knight over Inglourious Basterds, or The Avengers over Inside Llewyn Davis (and shame on them, for the Coen Brothers are perfection). That doesn't mean Inglourious Basterds or Inside Llewyn Davis are worse films - all it means is that people prefer different categories.
Same as that while being handed the same type of romance arcs for Cassandra and Josephine is unlucky (like Anders and Fenris in DA2), it doesn't mean in the slightest they are inferior to Solas' or Blackwall's, or anyone else's for that matter. They're just different categories.
...and I think it's because there was no real conflict for the characters to overcome or fall victim to. As long as it isn't excessive, drama can go a long way towards keeping the player invested in any story, and this is especially true about romances.
Don't confuse drama with development. Comparing pre-romanced Cassandra with endgame romanced Cassandra, I'd say there's been plenty of the latter.
Blackwall has a good character arc and the biggest strength of the romance is that it greatly tests the relationship and puts the characters through fire. After Revelations, it fizzles out. The symbolic mask is off and there's nothing left to explore. The writer has said the epilogue balcony scene is meant to be the beginning of the actual relationship. So it does feel somewhat lacking after the big climax. It just hangs there in a weird spot.
.... Only who said it's the actual climax? Let's face it boys and gals - the romances are not over yet and I get a very strong feeling we'll get continuations of them (possibly with drama added) in upcoming DLCs ![]()
Exquieeze me? Fenris never lied to me! Anders may have been a selfish d**che, but Fen was just scared of allowing anyone to get that close. Fenris didn't lie, he just ran and hid for a few years.
And recovering addict? Is that all you saw in Cullen? I saw a good and decent man who'd been through hell and back TWICE, find the strength and determination to give up an addictive drug that was forced on him as a prerequisite of his faith! The man is amazing. Through it all he grows in character and determination to do the right thing. Cullen is a rock!
Fenris did not lie to you but he left you and put you at an uneasy spot as he tried to figure out what he wanted. That's drama.
And Cullen is a recovering addict. I'm not say he;s not a good man...he is. But the point the romance had a lot a drama in it to handle that most normal people would not stay for. I never said it was not a bad romance.

Yeah, there's really no follow-up to the reveal about his past and having the two of them rebuild their relationship after the trust has been shattered?
Compare that to say, Solas' romance and the atmosphere post-breakup, which has both him and Lavellan unsure how to act around each other, as well as banter with Cole that has him try to help fix their broken relationship?
Cassandra's romance seems good. She's a great character, too.
Cullen's and Blackwall's romance arcs are both kind of blah. Solas is the jackpot, I grant you, though surely not to everyone's taste.
But maybe this just isn't your game. In Origins the female LIs both got post-game DLC while the male LI's got bupkus. You win some and you lose some.
You're kidding...

Sorry, but it's fantastic.

I think Cass romance in these post game dlcs is a romance that will have a different type of rollercoaster if she is made divine. She and the inquisitor fall deep in love and trying to work it out with her while she is divine is something that cass herself hinted would be difficult. Her reasoning to want spend some small time wiht the inquisitor is that now they both are about to be huge public figures in thedas and two heads of elite organizations in thedas. So if the public knew the inquisitor and divine was lovers that could be used as a clutch over either not that cass cant handle the danger because coming after her is foolish. but the chances of her becoming a target to be used as the inquisitorsp personal weakness has increased. We were built up with this relationship where we are this woman's second love and while she promises to always be by his side them being pulled into two different worlds can prevent them from being a family. Cass is already romantic traditionlist, so I am sure she wants to settle the old fashion way just like she likes to be courted, she wants that fairy tale ending but in post game content hopefully we see that fairy tale get rocked a little bit while I am sure there will be sides in both the chantry and inquisiton who will think its unwise to continue even if allies.
The romances have pros/cons, although some I feel have serious holes (Iron Bull's). Solas' for example has excellent scenes but the problem is there are so few of them; so few that I didn't really know what kind of relationship my pc was in with him until he ended it. While I like the Cullen/mage inquisitor dynamic I found him to be a bit boring. If you're not playing a mage I think the relationship is pretty dull. Sera's had a lot of content. Romance scenes, altered dialogue, nicknames, notes, kiss scenes, etc.
A lot of this is subjective, although I found Iron Bull's to be poorly written because there were too many unaddressed elephants in the room.
As a straight male gamer, I find it nigh on impossible to complain about the romances for my particular orientation in this game when I get to choose between Cassandra and Josephine.
Romantic religious warrior woman or the Dragon Age Disney Princess? I CAN'T GO WRONG! They're both just...fantastic.
Frankly, I find it much easier to complain if I were a dwarf/qunari woman. Blackwall(not bad but a little too agnsty) and Iron Bull(thoroughly 'meh')? Yeah, not the best of choices. Cullen and Solas were better, IMO.
It's all down to opinion, I personally liked Cassandra's romance better than Cullen/Solas/Blackwall but Iron Bull was my favorite (romanced him as a tiny male elf XD )
I would say that not knowing whether or not Cassandra would stay with you after she is named Divine is "drama". to each their own but Cassandra's romance was well done and i wouldnt have it any other way.
Uhm, you have Cassandra.....CASSANDRAAAAAAAAAA...CASSSANDRAAAAAAAA!! and you had the OGB and MORRRRRRRRIGAN!!!!!
Ahem,
I played ME all the romances were disaster for straight females(Except Garus)....and if A straight women played just ME3 :/ All of the males LI didn't cheat, or forceable die on you.
and did I mention...
YOU HAVE CASSANDRA!!!!!

THIS. EXACTLY THIS. I think this too is why I Found the Cass romance off. She never acknowledged your flirting until she comes up and taps on your shoulder from behind while you walk through scaffolding like a wizard. It ruined any possible connection and character interaction potential. It made the whole romance feel shallow and lifeless. GREAT OBSERVATION MAGEBANE.
huh? Cassandra's reactions to flirting is actually quite humorous.
Fenris did not lie to you but he left you and put you at an uneasy spot as he tried to figure out what he wanted. That's drama.

I know, and I would agree that in real life there are many who wouldn't stick around for either guy. But their romances are "romantic" in that they are extreme versions of things you might see in real life. Romances in literature aren't about what life really is, but what it could be and sometimes "should" be and often what it should never be. Romance in art is a way to safely explore extremes.
In real life, Cullen would probably relapse more than once before finally kicking the habit (or succumbing to it), making life difficult for those who care about him.
And you are right, it's all drama, high drama, sometimes melodrama, and frankly at least for me, it's much more fun (in pretend) than ordinary and normal which I much prefer in real life.
I wasn't trying to criticize, I was just adding my POV about the things I saw in the two characters.
My guess is you're American, since only an American would call Paris "Paris, France".

Ouch. I see you got the claws out today.
I completely agree about Josephine. However I think Cassandra's romance was decent enough.
I am a straight woman, and I would happily trade with the boys. Blackwall and Solas make me feel as if I've been played for a fool--I think less of my Inquisitors for romancing these men. Sera drives me insane and not in a good way. Cassandra would actually make me happy instead of being a compromise.
And Bull?
I respect your opinion, but Cassandra's was definitely good. She's a passionate person - not a softie like so many mistake her to - about love and relationships but equally as passionate about her duty as a Seeker. I found it refreshing that she didn't keel over and fawn on my Inquisitor every time I flirted with her. That would've been so out of character for her. Her romance is more nuanced and understated. I def liked Josephine's because it's such a departure from the nearly Shakesperean drama they like putting into each love arc, although they rarely ever do a bad job (*tries not to think about Cortez and Jack*). It was also nice to see the ladies get some shine.
So yeah, I understand how you feel but I don't really interpret them that way. *recites poetry to his bae*
