The Solas romance for instance is so wonderfully intertwined with the story and is just filled to the brim with lore and has layers upon layers of content.

It's like the writers realized that fans didn't care for Jacob, so instead of enhancing his character they've decided to butcher him into a stereotype which destroyed all development he had in ME2. They honestly thought that fans wouldn't notice it.

It's sad because he's the only guy who says he actually loves Shepard in ME2, takes his time developing their relationship, and people let one ham-fisted line define him. They did at least redeem him in Citadel. But yeah, I think the writers of these romances have done a good job overall.

I like Jacob. As long as you don't romance him, he is a good guy in the games.

I think they said they "forgot he was a romance" the same with Thane too I think

I'm watching some of the female romance play-throughs and I am just blown away.  Both at the quality itself and the amount of difference in quality when compared to the straight male romances.  Now, I can already sense some of you breaking out the shot glasses and I KNOW most of you have begun rolling your eyes right about....now.  But hear me out on this one.

Why does it feel like Bioware put in 1000x more effort into the Solas/Blackwall/Cullen romances than any other?   I'm not insinuating anything and I'm not here to RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE but there comes a point where sometimes you just got to point something out.   The Solas romance for instance is so wonderfully intertwined with the story and is just filled to the brim with lore and has layers upon layers of content.  Blackwall's romance is just a choice lover's dream come true.  And I've already made a thread some weeks ago about well done his romance was.  Now, as for Cass and Josie....

Comparing Solas' and Blackwall's romances to Josephine's and Cass's is like comparing an F-15 to a crop duster.  Sure, they'll both take you to where you want to go, but the fighter jet is just....SO MUCH MORE FUN.  And you can shoot missiles flying that sucker!    Cass's romance has no choices.  None whatsoever.  You either choose to romance her or choose not to.  And once you do, it pretty much fizzles out for the rest of the game.  I love ya Cassandra but your romance has no meat to it.  No SUBSTANCE.

Josephine's is even worse, which is quite a feat.  You either duel the guy and profess your love to her or you act like a fool and she rejects both you and that swag lord Otranto.  The End.  Once the duel is over, there are no further choices or really any scenes of any substance whatsoever.  And yes, you may be saying "Chronoid, this is an RPG, not a dating sim!"

Yes.  But all I'm doing is comparing these underwhelming romances to the ones which truly shine.  So I know Bioware is capable of doing better.  Much, MUCH better.

tl;dr version: Read or do not read.  There is no try.  (and no coming into my thread complaining about how long my post is either)

Hmmmm, I guess on some level, it's just what romance really fits your fancy. I thought Cass's romance was great. I can't speak about Josie at all though. I didn't think Blackwall's was that great though. I will admit that Solas was probably the "meatiest" of the heterosexual only romances. Cullen's was so so for me.

I still think they were jerks, for doing what they did with him tbh.

The Blackwall romance can make the femQuizzy look way too incompetent for my taste.  They can have that.

If my LI dumps me they better reveal themselves as the big bad evilz right then and there cause I would want to fight not keep walking past him as he paints his stupid mural.  But then again I don't know when Solas dumps the femQuizzy.

Cullen is a simple straight forward romance like Cassandra. His addiction could have been done better but overall I would say he is the healthiest of the straight female relationships.

Cass ignoring my MQuizzy is one of the major reasons I lost interest in ever romancing her. IB also does that. Which crossed them both off my list and Dorian just swooped in and stole my Quizzy's heart.

I do wish there was more conflict with his Venatori quest. I mean he knew these people and yet it's all "Surprise!" *Fight and Kill*  and you can practically hook up with him right when you get to Skyhold on most occasions.  The major romance events are sort of stacked together. I wish the romance had arcs which take place during the course of the story.  But other than that, I enjoyed his romance a great deal. I felt that it was mellow without all the dramatics, not mushy yet mushy (if that makes sense lol), and a lot of brain picking.  The romance felt a bit realistic.

He's right. Jacob was written by Lukas Kristjanson (same guy who wrote Aveline/Sera). He wasn't asked to be on the writing team for ME3. I've never seen a reason given for Jacob's ME3 romance development so beats me why they went the direction they did. (I did see that Thane's romance subplot was unintentionally overlooked.)  There's such a disconnect between ME2 and ME3 versions of Jacob that you just know it's not the same guy. It's the same as two actresses playing Becky on Roseanne.

Honestly, I tend to forget Solas and Blackwall are even around. Cullen, I can't forget because he's at the wartable, but I never found him interesting -- I already knew who he was from previous games and I didn't like that person. I'm also not a fan of characters that are too angsty. As soon as someone starts saying, "I'm no good for you" or "we shouldn't be together," it's an automatic drop.

My favorite romances are Josephine and Dorian. Josephine was sweet, simple and very fairytale. That worked for my first Inquisitor. Dorian had a lot of realism that I appreciated. Cassandra, I haven't romanced yet, but when I made a male inquisitor for Dorian, it was a massive struggle to not flirt with her. I really enjoy her as a character and she's definitely someone I have no problem devoting hours of gameplay for. The only other people I'm interested in are Bull and Sera.

But, all and all, what it comes down to is different preferences.

That wasn't even the main problem with Jacob, which is that Shepard practically drops her panties every time she goes into his work area. Must get frisky around the smell of gun oil.

God her dialogue was terrible. That I agree with. But I saw many threads where they hated him for "reasons other than that".

Yeah, that really bothered me as well.

Sure I didn't care for Jacob before, simply because he was a tad bland and the cringeworthy romance dialogue, but I never actually disliked the guy. The same can't be said when they decided to pull those kind of shenanigans on his romance in ME3, having him completely suffer from aesop amnesia about owning one's mistakes and let's not even start with all the unfortunate implications.

It's weird how they accidentally created a situation where not romancing someone makes them a better character?

I guess i'm different personally, i'm not sure what the other players saw in all these romances and the companions personalities in DA inquisition that i didn't, but for me they seemed very lack luster and flat for me all round,

I decided to romance sera because she seemed the most out there companion, but even her romance wasn't what i'd call riveting writing.

I really enjoyed the last two games, but this one just was not for me romance wise this time around..

I wish i saw what other customers saw in the writing..

Thanks for the heads-up regarding getting my hopes up for my next inquisitor.  I was planning a male archer romancing Cassandra (and still will), but won't get my hopes up too much.  So far, I've only completed a dual-wielder romancing Blackwall (I adored the romance) and a KE romancing Solas (loved the class, underwhelmed by Solas in general.)  I'm in the middle of romancing Cullen with my rift mage (very pleasantly surprised by where they went with him) and enjoying this playthrough a lot.  I was thinking of doing a warrior this time anyway, so maybe I'll save Cassandra for later.

I liked Jacob, but I HATED the HEAVY-HANDED, Mae West,"come up and see me some time, big boy", come on that FemShep used. When he backed away, I was embarrassed, but didn't blame him a bit. It was really bad writing, felt like I was forcing him into a relationship, so I back away. It was really, poorly written. I thought Jacob was a decent guy, but I really felt like my come-on was a put-off. I left him alone after that.

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I've liked the romances I've played (Solas, Sera...) and the ones I've seen on YT (pretty much all the rest).

I think if you can't find someone you like out of eight (or nine, if you wanna count Harding, who was basically the Sebastian romance of DAI) possible love interests then.. ?? Uh, not sure what to tell you.
