I mean, seriously? What other company even represents any deviation from the majority like Bioware does? Some games show LGBT charcters, but theyre usually for simple fanservice. Bioware portrays their charcters with humancy decency, and depth. Its amazing what Bioware does her. Caps off.

Apparently there is such a thing.

Maybe they reproduce asexually?

I like their games and refuse to play games where I can't be "me" (female) in a game.  It's a reason I appreciate the company and brand.  I also like that they think about the GLBT gamers because no one else really did before.

That said, I'm not pissing my pants happy with Inquisition.

As long as they're making good characters, I don't much care about their sexuality or gender. I'd like to think that remains their focus, and the rest is just a side effect of a general tendency towards avoiding arbitrary exclusion.

I'm not going to lie, I don't see why a character being gay is a big deal. As long as they're interesting, who cares?

I mean, besides uptight middle-aged people from the Bible Belt.

Whom obviously we can generalize about with impunity because certainly no one in Red States appreciates a good story or gay people.

By the way, has anyone talked to you about Heavenly Father today?  ((parks bicycle))

The OP's point is they're daring enough to delve into more controversial relationships (homosexual, inter-species), and in this game even had a transgender character in Krem.

It's not like this is anything new though, so why feel it's important enough to warrant a thread? Granted, it's a video game and ultimately unimportant, but this has been going on for a while now. LGBT characters and themes have had presence in video games since the 80's. Nintendo was known for its censorship back in the day, but Sega was always much more lenient with what they allowed on their systems (in Japan anyway, they exported modified and censored copies of games overseas).

Roxy and Poison from Final Fight are both trans women, and that game is from 1989. Venom from Guilty Gear is gay, and it's implied (very heavily implied to the point of indirect confirmation) that Juri from Street Fighter 4 is a lesbian (her profile on the SF4 website literally says she loves big breasts).

Im really surprised to see this post get new replies a month after I made it :) See,  I made this topic after I had lent a close lesbian friend my copy of DA2 (she thought that one looked more interesting). THe next day she sends me a ton of messages relating to how she hadnt seen her sexuality represented in a video game before, where it didnt seem forced or made for fanservice. It made me realize that most games dont portray much of a non straight/male/white audience. Unless we are lookign at indie games, I cant think of another game that treats its subject matter with a such a care.

Also, to the female audience comment, I meant that theyre arent many series that portray women as incredibly thought out characters. Bordelrands kinda does it, Cortana is good, and Ellie is a step forward. The only major AAA series that even comes close is to Tomb Raider, and even Lara is a bit of piece of work. However, Biwoaer does an absolutely fantastic job at well done female characters. From Shepard to Hawke, from Imoen to Dawn Star, and Cassandra to Bastilla, Bioaer is great at creating female characters.

Lara is not a "piece of work".  We were doing fine until then.... :)

Lara Croft is an archaeologist.  Really that's all that matters.

Well, I'm not sure to what extent females may be considered a "minority", but it is pretty nice to see a game widen its audience a bit and flesh out characters too often brushed aside or left in stereotypes (or just generally kind of written around this straight male perspective). It's not as daring as it might have been in the past, but it's fairly rarely done all the same. Not to say, of course, that BioWare are the first or only company to do so.

Though I, er, think BioWare interspecies is maybe a little different from real-world interspecies. Interracial isn't really that ignored, these days.

Did any of these games have actual romances including sex scenes?

I second this...*prepares pillow bunker*

This has been a source of discussion in many, many places, but let's be fair to the OP. :) As a female gamer who happens to be gay, I do have to take my hat off to BioWare. Yes, LGBT characters have existed for many years (was their existence a positive thing based on portrayal - not always), but no other developer have the same time and attention to such options especially in RPGs. I can make my PC a suave, sophisticated lady killer like myself (jk *eye roll*), and the same sex options have always been interesting, compelling characters. The fact I could have a fully fleshed out lady romance in ME and DA games was novel, and it's something I'm grateful for.

Well, to be honest, while there have been LGBT characters in games since the 80's, it's really been a rocky start.

You do know why Roxy and Poison are transwomen, right?  The only reason why is because at the time, games in America banned violence against women in fighting games.  So to skirt the issue, they 'changed' Roxy and Poison to transwomen because, apparently, it's okay to beat up a transwoman, but not a biological woman.  Sure enough, it got past the censors when they made that change.  Eventually, as censorship loosened up, Roxy and Poison were 'changed' back to biological women for a few years before the 'canon' set one of them, not sure which, as trans.  That's the only reason why there were trans characters in Final Fight.  When you know that part of the story, it's not so inclusive sounding.

The reality is that there have only been a very small number of gay characters who weren't played as jokes, creepy villains, or purely for 'gay panic' purposes from the male PCs.  Bisexual ladies, for obvious reasons, have been the most represented, but unfortunately, the audience for that is rarely other ladies.  And, to be honest, it hasn't been until the last 5-6 years that gay male characters have become 'mainstream' and, even now, there is still huge backlash from games when they include them.

I say this as a gay guy who was born in the late 70's, got his first Nintendo when he was about 8, and has been playing video games relentlessly ever since.  In the almost 30 years that I've been a gamer, LGBT characters have only been common and not played as jokes for a small number of those  years.  It's refreshing.  And, to be honest, I understand why some younger people don't see the big deal, but there's a history here that is too fresh to be ignored.

That's why Bioware is getting inclusiveness awards and that's why Bioware, regardless of some of the less than stellar aspects in their games, will always be my favorite developer and I will always buy any game that they make.  It's about rewarding them for going against the grain and allowing other companies to see that including LGBT characters and themes in realistic and respectful ways will not cause games to lose money.

Dorian is wonderfully awesome, Sera is a try hard who is very annoying, and IB is shagging everything left to right and making plenty of Clerics, Mages, and Templars walk funny.

2/3 likeable LGBT main companions is pretty good BioWare.
