Hey everyone,

I recently started playing MotB and noticed that I have huge FPS drops, especially during combat.

I tried reinstalling the game, removing all mods, disabling virtually every single graphics and sound option which had 0 impact on the FPS drops. I also tried countless tips I could find online, most of the  "solutions" even worsen the situation..

I have high-end rig and it is really stupid that I can't seem to make an 8 year old game to run smoothly :(. I'm at the point where I simply can't enjoy the game due to constant FPS drops.

I wonder if anyone has anything to suggest. I will try literally anything to make the game work as story seems to be very interesting so far and I like the "gloomy" feel. Please halp.

First put your mods back in, because that's not the problem.  Install Skywing's Client Extension, and reboot your computer, then launch the game through Skywing's launcher.  Then, if FPS is satisfactory, as it should be, gradually add back graphic options.

Do you have an NVidia graphics card?

Thanks for the tip, but it did nothing. I still get fps drops almost every time I rotate the camera or when combat round starts.

Yes - I have GTX 970

Audio driver issue?

Either that or video driver. NVidia drivers have been known to need rolling back sometimes to fix NWN2 performance.

I suppose the other possibility is that something is running in the background that affects performance.

Just to check that it's not some MoTB funny it might be worth running a different module to see if the problem is the same.

Latest drivers. I tried disabling sound completely - no effect.

I tried few versions of drivers, including beta ones - it is the same so I doubt it is graphics issue.

I tried booting up MoW and it seems the problem is even worse there - I get drops to 15 FPS by simply moving through the sewers so I guess it is the problem with the game itself. Funny that I finished the OC without noticing this stuff much. I guess it didn't happen as often so it wasn't irritating.

In regards to background processes - I tried to run the game with almost everything turned off, no affect whatsoever.

I tried many things and I would not have posted here if I was not out of ideas. :(

Do you have an integrated graphics card that it might be using instead of your GTX970, or power saving options that might be cutting back you CPU.

If it literally did nothing, then it's not running.  You should at the very least see several new windows appearing, at least one of which says "Client Extension", which should remain open while you play.

Ye I saw the new windows (3 in fact) and the activity log is filling up with data - asset loads, pause/unpause actions and etc. so I do believe that it is working.

CE helps with transitions, but I've never heard of it helping with frame rate.

Can you confirm that this problem doesn't affect other games?

Have you looked in Task Manager to see what else is running that may be taking up lots of CPU or memory?

Have you run DX diagnostics?

Yep - no problems with other games I have tried. I ran DAI on ultra settings and have 55-60 FPS without any issues. I have also tried many other few year old games and all run without any problems.

Yes I did, I don't have more than 25% CPU load running NWN2 and I have 16GB of RAM so memory is not an issue. I have pretty powerful PC and I'm quite tech-savvy, so I can tell for certain that it is not a hardware resource issue.

Have you run DX diagnostics?

I did. Everything is enabled, signed, up to date and running without problems.

I guess I will try reinstalling the game again and try to launch a new game without modifying any stock settings. If nothing will change I guess I'll just have to put the game on hold :/

Just one more idea:

When you check your soundsettings in game / options, try "Miles Fast 2D..." .

With this my game runs flawless, while the other settings may cause problems, especially with older Creative cards ("Soundblaster").

Must not be the reason, but it won't hurt to check ;) ...

I fiddled with all sorts of settings for the past 30 minutes and I'm not exactly sure what I did right but I finally have a stable frame rate. I do have this sound option set right now, but I do believe I have tried all of the sound settings before and nothing changed. However I do not intend to change any of the settings anymore as this frame rate issue has caused enough headache :D.

Thanks everyone for trying to help :)

Glad it's working now, but since you didn't confirm doing so after my instructions, I'm asking this to help with diagnostics with others in the future: Did you in fact restart the computer after installing the Client Extension and before reporting on the results?  Restarting is not because the Client Extension requires it, but because it addresses another aspect of the timing issue which can cause the stuttering.

It does, most certainly, in certain circumstances.

I did restart the PC and tried to run the game with extension afterwards (I turned the PC off yesterday and tried to run the game today) but it had no impact. Furthermore I had completely reinstalled the game and I currently have no extension installed (totally forgot about it) and it works just fine.

I have a somewhat related problem, in that after tinkering around a bit with certain settings and getting the Client Extension to fix the strange stutter I would otherwise get, the game now runs quite smoothly. EXCEPT for the part when you get to the Skymirror involving water elementals and everything just slows down to a barely playable crawl. Now, I've gotten past that and everything since then has thus far been fine, but I'm just dreading that there's going to be some section in the future that's just going randomly to turn into a slideshow.

Unrelated but I'll just post it here since it doesn't deserve it's own thread: is there an existing mod for it or another way to edit the sound of a single spell? Evard's Black Tentacles has been really useful to my Wizard so far, but the sound is driving me insane. It's crazy loud compared to everything else.

I think it's likely some areas will still slow you down.  For instance, I get a very smooth frame rate running at 1920x1080, with full shadows and all the other bells and whistles on except for antialiasing, but the open air market in Samargol in SoZ always slows me down.

For the tentacles, yes.  If you identify the name of the sound effect, you can replace it with a quieter one by putting a copy of the quieter one in your override folder with the same name.

I wouldn't mind betting it's because they left shadows turned for all of the vegetation. Most of the shadows from small plants will be eclipsed by shadows from placeables like walls and buildings (or larger plants like trees), but the game engine tries to draw them separately anyway.

There are a few obnoxious spell sounds in the game. One spell (I think it's 'Destruction') sometimes gets its loud and grating VFX sound stuck in a constant loop, which adds insult to injury.

It's not that it's just slowing down, I don't know what the actual number is but it feels like a drop from, say 40-60 fps to below 10 for that short section.

Oh, so it'll automatically recognize the edited version as the one to be played as long as I just have the correct file name for it once I toss it into the override folder? Neat. Looks like I'll be digging through the sound files today.

One question:

Do you have an onboard sound device or a regular soundcard, like the mentioned Soundblaster <whatever version> of Creative Labs?

I am convinced, that most of the issues which were reported here come from sound devices, sound settings and sound drivers.

Perhaps some of those players who played the game shortly after release with Windows XP and then with Windows Vista AND a Creative Labs card remember what a mess this was...

Not exactly a tech-specialist, but I think it's ok to say, that nowadays power of our systems is far beyond the requirements of NWN 2.

Everyone with a system built during the last 5 years should be able to run it with all settings at max.

But sometimes the devil is in the details and I bet, in most (NWN 2 related) cases the sound devices are involved.
