You know, it was campy at times, but having a conversation while splattered with blood after killing 100 darkspawn is a dragon age staple.

I miss it. DAI is so.. I don't know, sanitary. Is it an effort to be non-offensive, or the distance DAI from earlier dragon age games?

Like okay, the inquisitor is already all about pretty armor outfits with flowing coats and hanging out in the orlesian court, while the warden was about platemail and leather and Mage robes, and I get he's not a "front lines" kind of character (hell, he doesn't even participate in the big battle in the wilds, he has other things to do there) but still.

Blood splatter should be an option. And the drop or so we see doesn't cut it. I want to cheerfully discuss politics with varrick while dripping in the blood of the 20 Templars I just cut down. My inquisitor must go through like 20 handkerchiefs an hour.

Actually, now that I think about it, nothing really bleeds in dragon age anymore... Why did they tone to down to G rated violence? Like in da2, a really strong move would cut an enemy in half. There were chunks, now enemies just fall over like they've been shot in a 1960s crime drama.

I feel like I'm swinging nerf weapons. At least hawke and the warden knew how to hit something.

And the death animations from origins, so much more satisfying then watching an enemy just fall over. Those were great, especially for the dragon kills.

You know there is blood spatter in this game, yes?

Or am I the only one who sees it?

And nobody was cut in half in DA2, they exploded like they ate a bag of dynamite. It was dumb.

I see plenty of spatter on melee characters. I don't know offhand if it covers their face like it used to (there's so few cutscenes that I can't remember ever seeing somebody talking while covered in blood), but it doesn't seem much different from the past games when it comes to equipment.

Death effects are tied to elements now. Walking Bomb is a huge gory explosion, enemies that die to lightning "pop" in a bloody mess, fire burns them to ash, and ice freezes them solid until they eventually shatter. Most deaths from physical damage just seem to be left to physics (I do wish they'd let the physics run longer on the corpses, though).

I admit to being disappointed that dismemberment didn't make it in, but I guess that's what sequels are for.

The death animations were great.

But no, I barely saw it, on the armor a bit, but never on the inquisitor's face. I think I saw a tiny red splotch once or twice.

You have to admit though, the combat had so much more "oomph" to it, it felt like blows were connecting, versus now where it's just a dull thud. And there were DEFINIETLY guys cut in half, usually top and lower half, the ability with the horse icon for warriors in particular.

But no, my inquisitor has never had blood on his face that I've seen, and he's warrior, in the thick of it. I just miss those conversations with alistair or varrick where there's little bits of darkspawn in your hair.

My Inquisitor has been drenched in blood quite a few times in DA:I. I can't say I noticed any difference from DA:O.

My warriors get covered in blood just like in DA: O and DA2, it just isn't noticeable as it was in the previous ones because conversations don't happen after battles. I don't remember anybody being cut in half at all, only the decapitations and walking bomb explosions.

Maybe that's it... god knows there's fewer conversation scenes. Still, can't think of single time my inquisitor's face was splattered... certainly not in conversation.

I never saw any blood during the DA:I combat. Mostly just sparkles, flash, and over the top animations.

Instead of a face that looks like a bad case of chicken pox, we instead get more realistic blood stains:

Kill an enemy with an electrical attack, and you'll turn him into a bloody puddle if that attack knocks health out completely. My KE Inquisitor pretty much made everyone fizzle and pop with lightning.

I agree that the blood-spatter is far more realistic, I mean, look at that gorgeous absorption pattern on the fabric and spatter pattern on the skin!  I have far bloodier shots, but this one is pretty average (as a knight enchanter who uses both ranged and hand-to-hand combat):

I'm just glad the blood splatter stays off of faces this time. Always had it turned off in the past.

I also noticed wading through muck, dirt etc. stains your character's clothes now. Pretty cool.

Nothing like making love to your love interest while covered in sticky blood. I remember being propositioned while looting dead bodies and completely covered in blood.

Man, how sexy is that?

Origins was pretty wild about the blood splatter. In the human noble origin, you kill some rats in the larder, and suddenly it looks like the soon-to-be Warden and what's-his-face put someone through a wood chipper.

Isn't enough?

It must be on the face? What kind of weird fetish is that?

Persistent money shot, bro.

I always turn this gore thing off in each game anyway. It always looks pretty ridiculous, especially if you're covered in blood after fighting demons. Do they even bleed?

Good question. I think in DA:O we actually get covered in blood when fighting Golems too, actually. Seems it is a default thing.

Maybe I'm the only one who missed those scenes of hanging out with Alistair in the midst of 50 corpses, dripping with blood, and cheerfully chatting about our companions.

Always loved it though, it was uniquely "dragon age".

I hereby surrender the thread.

Honestly, you could have just left it as "i really miss Dragon Age"... Same thing...

Seriously thogh, the splatter here is hit and miss.. Like the mud.. It ends up making a checkered pattern, rather than looking like you walked through mud..

Or were you referring to the kill animations? Those were epic.. Decapitations, climbing an Ogre, shanking, then twisting the blade in his face! Shoving your sword down the throat of a bear/wolf, and yanking it bak out!

That was a completely different Bioware/Dragon Age.. The game was darker, grittier, more adult, and required thinking.. It really is a completely different style of game, from every aspect.. In my honest opinion, the ONLY remaining Dragon Age factor, is the Lore, and setting.. Nothing else is left from previous games! Each one has been increasingly different from the last!

Hmm.. I'm liking the DAI blood splatter more, but this may have convinced me to turn it off. I don't like getting blood on my characters from killing things that don't bleed. Maybe DA can work on that in the next game.
