Since we never got an answer on why the Catalyst had no involvement during ME1-ME2, and a lot of unanswered questions, a prequel comic or book would be a cool interesting way to get those answers. We know from Vigil that the Protheans on Ilos (a few hundred) put themselves into cryosleep when the Reapers attached. When they awoke, the cycle was over, and there were only a dozen survivors left (the key researchers). One of them possibly the chief overseer named Ksad Ishan, who gave personal imprints to Vigil.
They knew the Citadel was an enormous mass relay linking to dark space. They knew the keepers were controlled by the Citadel (possibly the Catalyst). And we knew it was the keepers who were suppose to activate the Citadel relay after being sent a signal by Sov (how they figured out this part of the Reaper's plan is a mystery). They spent decades of their remaining lives studying a way to alter the signal, and then used the conduit to gain access to the Citadel, and made the modifications. They also sent a warning to the surviving beacons, in hopes of it being found by surviving protheans.
But once they entered the Citadel, there was no going back. Vigil predicted they starved to death.
There's a lot of story here you can fill in that can give answers to their remaining years. Like how they discovered what they discovered. Was the Catalyst active at the time? And if so, were there some hidden battle on the Citadel between them and the Catalyst? Did they disabled the Catalyst? Or was the Catalyst in hibernation like Sov, and the other Reapers (which Vigil confirms), and was never awoke because they messed with the Keepers? And also, did the survivors really died on the Citadel?
There's a lot of potential story that can be told here.
