- Load game via Steam
- Wait for Credits (lame they cant be skipped after watched once)
- Notice 'Press Any Key' Title Screen
- Press Any Key
- Notice animation
- Notice screen goes black (before loading Main Menu)
- Notice game crashes to desktop before Main Menu is loaded
- While on the black screen, user hears the audio music 'hiccup' before crashing to desktop

I cannot get to the main menu.

*Note: I will be reinstalling the game/DLC from Steam and will see if this fixes the issue.

UPDATE: Reinstalling game via Steam still does not work. Same issue in the same area, regardless of whether DLC is installed or not.

Seems a lot of users with Windows 7 (im running 64) are hitting this issue with the Steam digi-deluxe version.

UPDATE 2 - Possible Fix (NOT):
I went into Documents > Bioware > Deleted Mass Effect 2 folder

Launched game > Press Any Key > Login to EA/Cerebus > Main Menu!

I will try and repro the issue again, and see if I can salvage the save file. Had to delete my first one. Which is lame, but hey im in the main menu now!

UPDATE 3 - Ceberus Network to blame!:

Ok, I think the problem is cerebrus network. Login to nucleus/Cerebrus is tied to the save file. If you launch game with no save file, it prompts you to login to nucleus and creates a player profile based on their email. However, once it looks for cerebrus connection, something goes wrong, and the title crashes to desktop.

Therefore, a user having this particular problem may be able to play once, but any time it tries to connect to the cerebrus server the game will crash. So far I crash when launching game with a save file, and once when I died in-game (pressed Resume, crashed).

BIOWARE: Please investigate further. There's not much I can do but play the intro until I die. Unless this bug is a feature: Contra Difficulty. In the meantime Ill be surfing the Cerebrus problem threads and see if it fixes/changes the issue.

I notcied that the Cerberus Weapon and Armor loads as "Normandy Crash Site." Does that makes any sense?

I noticed that too. I figured you get bonus Cerebus Weapon and Armour content during the Normandy Crash site mission.

When I first got this problem, I had everything installed except for Zaeed's DLC. Thinking it was a one-off, I installed Zaeeds DLC, launched game, and now I repro this crash 100%

This happens to me as well except I have it on DVD. I noticed that the game appeared to survive all the way to the main menu until I imported my ME 1 saves.

Actually I just tried removing my ME 1 files and the game works. Unfortunately I don't want to play the game without my import.

Uninstalled, reinstalled, all via steam. Launched the game with no DLC, still same problem, still crashing to desktop when pressing 'Press Any Key'.

As a user, I am out of ideas on how to make this work. I feel I've wasted a lot of money, pre-ordered money, for a game that doesn't work.

The rest is up to Bioware team now :(

I have a similar problem, possibly related, but less extreme. My game crashes(full on freeze, no crash to desktop, no ctrl-alt-del to shut the prog down, just have to hard reset the system) if I sit at the main menu and try to read the cerberus network computer. I'm pretty sure I'm connected to it(cerberus network) and if I really quickly try to start a game or load a game I can do so just fine. haven't been able to see if my dlc is authenticated or not. I put in the cerberus code here and i downloaded all the files that were listed as my unlocked promotions and installed them.

Perhaps create a new thread about it, seems a bit different.

Seems many users are having issues with Windows 7 + Steam digi deluxe edition.

Btw, I get cake and beer at work every Friday for free. Its awesome.

I will continue bumping thread until A) the game works. Or B) Bioware even * acknowledges* my query and is doing something about it. Even if that means putting it in the backlog. I don't care, just something to say that they are aware I have an issue and are doing anything about it.

I have this too, bump.

In the meatime, I may have a temporary solution; if you go to Documents > Bioware > Mass Effect 2 > Save, and remove your savegame(s), the game will play. It sucks but it's better than nothing while we wait for a real fix.

Same problem. Very well documented Omnitron. Wish bioware would do something. I feel Ive wasted money and would never recommend getting this game or any Bioware game to friends due to the difficulty. Not until it is resolved at least.

I think this might be a firewall issue as well. The problem is happening on my work computer so I don't have access to the network settings or be able to mess with port forwarding. I think it might be that my firewall is blocking connection to the cerebus network, which isn't being handled gracefully by the game.

I'll try this on my other work computer, its a different OS/system specs so if the same problem occurs there then it will give credence to my firewall theory.

Ill report back with my findings.

I've found something that fixes it, at least for me. If you go into the file where the ME2 saves are stored, then the file where the save of the character you played last (I only have 1, so I guess it could be any character), there'll be a couple of things inside there. Take the numbered one (it was Save_0004 for me, I was on 4 saves) and remove it. After doing that, mine worked fine, and I simply reloaded a quicksave/autosave. That said, I guess it could be any of the saves that are corrupted.

I am having the same problem, i got the digital delux download from gamestop.com though not steam, get to the main title menu click to continue and game crashes, the game played great for me for the first 3 days, had all the DLC, i noticed the problem right after i tired installing the incisor sniper rifle and collectors armor DLC, i reinstalled etc, I even wiped my HD and reinstalled OS and everything else. this is the error I get in the windows applicaiton event log

Faulting application MassEffect2.exe, version 1.0.1593.2, time stamp 0x4b284aad, faulting module MassEffect2.exe, version 1.0.1593.2, time stamp 0x4b284aad, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00a03f0a, process id 0xf4c, application start time 0x01caa6707f198203.

I have Vista home ultimate 32bit, Gefore 8800 512mb vid card, 3 gig RaM and 1.8 dual core processor, I dont have any current saves of the game since i just reloaded my entire computer so I really dont think this is a save file related issue.

This fixed it for me!

Two of my saves were corrupt: AutoSave.pcsav and CahpterSave.pcsav.

They had a file size of 0 so I deleted them and now everything works fine!

I think what happened was the game tries to save, and my hard drive was full...

:)
