for me I think of it like this

 

underlying personality - eg beliefs, attitudes

 

outward personality - style of speech and how they communicate

 

I then try and play them in keeping with those

I try, but they eventually overlap.

 

I'm playing a dwarf as a smuggler/criminal/reluctant hero, but he's slowly becoming accepting of his role as the Herald and Inquisitor.

 

Part of me creeps in no matter how hard I try to play a fully evil or fully good character.
