Meanwhile it's the 9th year I own this game and I can't count, how many times I played it.

I think it is ok to say, that there is nothing I've not seen, found, encountered except one:

I never managed to build up my "friendship" with this gnome Grobnar to that point which is needed to get no "influence failure" before the fight against Lorne starts.

Mostly I endure his presence in my active party from the point when I find him until the trial, just to make sure not to miss an opportunity to tell him "good job, "well done", "you have a point" and more brownnosings just to make him favourably disposed towards me.

Nothing helps.

There is just one quest I skip in every game: The one with the bard in Blacklake quarter district. I don't even know, if there is something to gain in regard of Grobnar's favour.

I realize that this is another dead horse I'm beating and that this was discussed till the cow comes home. Nevertheless, people still start this game the first time and might want to know about the "system" to gain a companions favour.

So, please let me know about your insights and opinions. Thanks in advance! :)

Note: I never had ANY problem to defeat Lorne. Therefore I ask for the favour not to discuss the Lorne-fight here.

I think you do gain a little influence at the Battle of the Bards if you ask Grobnar to play a duet with you.  At least the dialogue leads to that conclusion:  "Play with you?  You want me to play with you?  I'd be honored - or whatever that thing is that's better than honored."

Also, you must have him along in the Gith stronghold, compliment him on his idea to rebuild the construct, and impress him with your knowledge of interdimensional spheres.  And when you meet the two gnomish women you must insist that he stay with you.

Or do what I do.  Click short every single thing that comes out of his mouth, dismiss him and never include him in your party, ever.  Then at the final battle, the annoying runt still joins your side, he gets killed and I don't even glance his way to consider resurrection.  Words cannot express how grating I find Grobnar.

Well, then I must be the point short I'd get at the bards battle.

What I never tried, too, is to refuse his request to join me when I meet him the first time. Would this even be possible?

@ unclejoe1917

This would be the consequent way

I only bring him during Khelgar's quest, NW archive quest (I only play that part twice, but you can get +4 influence with Grobnar), when we seek wendersnaven in ch3 (worth it, you get ~+9 just to being nice (you need to say "I want to believe, too", plus other well placed comments)). I always play Miss Nice and I don't have any problem, but you can loose influence with him if you don't follow conversation closely.

I am quite sure to have most of his points in later chapters, as he never betrays me when it comes to the final meetings.

It's just about the time BEFORE the fight against Lorne.

BTW, what would he do, when I had enough influence? I've heard about some buffs for the fight?

He gives you the Ironskin Chant, for sure;  maybe an Inspiration as well.

Ah, I see...

So, let's say, I have a gimped main who would have a hard time against Lorne, even these buffs won't be decisive, right?

Just how badly gimped is your character? But certainly those buffs don't turn you from Clark Kent into Superman.

Just how badly gimped is your character?

It was a theoretical question out of curiosity, because I and gimped chars are mutually excluding.

I tolerate Grobnar until he gets the construct working. I pretty much ignore him from then on, except perhaps to wring a bit of XP out of him with the Wendersnaven quest.

@basher I think that Gamebanshee implies you must take him into the Neverwinter Archives and then there are dialogue options that increase one's influence.

I quite like him but he requires micro-managing and many of his actions seem to be exclusive.

That's right - and it's a bit of a chore.  Not all of the questions that might come up allow you to gain influence, even on a correct answer.  What you may have to do is (1) kill everything in the archives (except the locked center room);  (2) save game;  (3) approach first book and answer;  (4) if you gained influence, save the game and continue, otherwise reload your save and try again.  In this way, milk influence out of three of the four books - the fourth one won't gain any influence (the question about the secret intelligence), but be sure you don't lose any there.

p.s.  just to throw salt on the wounds - one of the answers the game wants is wrong (the NW book)

Spoiler

I've only seen that tidbit mentioned in one place (the Forgotten Realms wiki), but it seems at odds with what Ammon Jerro tells you in MotB. It seems to be one of those vague rumours designed to justify a supposedly dead character's reappearance in some future game, should developers ever want to do so.

Actually I saw that in Storm of Zehir about a bard singing at a invisible instrument as rumor when hearing what others say.
