I find them super boring... I am not that close to finishing the game, but just wondered do I have to do them? Does it have a significant effect on the ending?

At the moment, I  am getting through all the side quests in the areas before I start new ones... and it's only 'close rifts' and 'collect shards' left XD

Very few rifts are actually key to progressing in a quest, like the one at the gates of Redcliffe. Other than that, it's just a matter of getting enough power to move the story along, and since the game has a ridiculous excess of points that you could never spend, you can skip some, especially those way out in the farthest reaches of the map.

I don't know if anything happens if you go past all of the milestones without closing some of the rifts, since I always do every single one in the game, but it's the only thing that allows you to gain XP no matter how high a level you are.

Nah leave them open, you didn't need those farmers anyways.

But no, nothing bad happens if you leave the rifts open. Just closing the plot critical rifts is enough (there are like, 5 I think?) and you can close the others after finishing the game, if you really want to.

The only thing interesting about closing the rifts is getting the achievement ("Marked for Greatness") - otherwise, you need not bother at all.

I hear you can get useful crafting ingredients from some of them, which may be useful if you can be bothered to do any crafting.

The Redcliffe one is only there if you pick that route of the quest though, it's not there if you pick the other one

Actually, you can do the meeting at Redcliffe (and close the two rifts there) and then go do Champions of the Just if you disagree with what's happening there.

How the hell can you find the rifts boring? It's basically the same as saying that you find fighting demons (an entire type of enemies in the game) boring D:

Really? I keep wondering if you can go there first and then still do Champions of the Just, but I was always afraid it'd lock me out of doing Champions so I never tested it.

You can go to Redcliffe, meet with Fiona, and go to the Chantry. After this you get the In Hushed Whispers war table mission. Only at that point you need to pick either it or CotJ.

"You had one job, Inquisitor!  Close the Rifts."

"And Build the Inquisition, ser!"

"Alright, two!  Two.  Two jobs."

"What about stopping Corypheus, ser?"

"Fine.  Three ... "

"And shouldn't we do something about the Orlesians ... "

"[disgusted noise] Fine.  AMONG your jobs ... "

This short play, Nobody expects Cassandra, has been brought to you by Python Playhouse.

I avoid them in nightmare. Terror demons are too annoying for me to bother with.

Despair Demons are ten times worse than the Terrors. Especially if you play a melee character.

You don't have to close all the rifts. From a role playing perspective I feel like I personally have to, as I am the only character as the PC who can do it. So I generally make an effort to close them all even if I am just beelining for them half the time. But there are no consequences if you elect to ignore them other than the fact that you are condemning anyone in the immediate area to death. ;)

I didn't close a single rift on my Elf female playthrough unless it was directly related to the main plot. All she wanted to do was hang out with Dorian, make out with Solas, and bang Cullen. lol!

Terros have to be most annoying enemy in this game. All that jumping

I closed 2 rifts and decided that was enough of that kind of encounter for me.

(I did close a few more later in the game, then some nice forum poster told me you can buy power in Skyhold. :P)

It helps if you have 2 mages with dispel and whatever the thing Cassandra does to get rid of ruptures, too. When the green glowy things turn up between phases, zap them and they don't turn into beasties.

No but I have no idea how you live with yourself leaving those eyesores staring at you from the map. Judging. Being all like 'oooooh, look at the inadequate Herald of Andraste, lets just leave the demon-pouring-holes open who caaaaarrreeesss that fennecs everywhere are probably being possessed and turning into monsters that eat the faces of children.'

Why? They're just so much fun to dodge them with Fade Step... :D

No you don't have to. I even skipped entire areas when I did a quick play through for just the story.

If you're playing on Nightmare though, the Influence and crafting materials help a great deal. Also, remember you can switch to a different character if you find their abilities easier to handle. I often switch to Sera so I can pick off demons from afar.

I hear ya ... The rifts drive me insane. I really hope someone comes out with an instant "kill all" mod that I could use on these. They're sooo repetitive. I would have preferred it if there was one or two per map or maybe one per map that had some sort of story or build up around it. Anyway, my last two play throughs on nightmare I basically closed the ones that were in the way of quests but tried to avoid as many as I could. The only downside is that you are missing out on rune materials since you are unlikely to get enough from closing as few rifts as possible. I compensated by crafting the runes that require red lyrium since that is plentiful. :)

For me this is a mistake in the game as it should be part of the story and the last mission should only be available after all rifts were done.

Well I suppose that would at least provide a gameplay reason to fully explore all the zones, though I'll wager it would greatly irritate a lot of people and result even more accusations of padding and gating.

Maybe when closing all rifts it would make the last mission easier? Or something like it?
