I think that the difference between Solas and Sera is that Solas wants to change how the world works (though he doesn't really reveal exactly how it should work after it's changed) while Sera is content with the current way of the world as long as it doesn't threaten her rather hedonistic lifestyle.

Well with Sera it's more like she realizes that if you lop the top off, a new group of arses will take its place. There will always be little people because someone has to clean the toilet. So unlike Solas she doesn't see rebellion as changing things except who plays what roles. I think this kind of happened to Solas regarding his past, elves are not in the role he envisioned when he lopped of the old elfy elves.

If you aren't a radical mage freedom-fighter who hates the Wardens, then Solas will hate you.

Nice. I was hoping that this thread would start a discussion. I see that there are plenty of Solas fans here, but some are in my camp. Every time I play a new game now, I just keep thinking that this judgmental  a-hole is the whole reason the Inquisition had to be formed. Solas's actions have caused the death and destruction of so many innocent lives. He did it to his own people too. He is the reason that the elves have lost their immortality and their fall from glory. Even his own hate him. The stories of The Dread Wolf depict him as an evil god. He betrayed his brothers and sisters in the "heavens." It seems that the only person that Solas truly likes is himself. Then we find out that he has a real friend and what does he do to her? Steals what is not his.

You allied with Templars. You trained as a templar and romanced a former templar. The templars are the army of the same Chantry who invaded and destroyed the Dales and the few things that survived Elvhenan's fall. Solas is an elven apostate mage and

Spoiler

What an *******! Why doesn't he love you?

Exactly.

This is one reason why I do not like Solas.  During my first playthrough with a Dailish elf, I took a disliking to him because he was so judgy and all, I know better about everything because I walked the fade'ish.  I even questioned if he cared about elves, his own people, so I put him on a shelf and left him there.  When I saw the ending all I could think of was what a smug, hypocritical jerk he is, and now he's the ultimate betrayer(so he thought, but Flemeth knew what the little putz was up to) of his best friend?  I mean, how dare he look down on everyone else when he's the reason Thedas was at risk.  I hope he's the protagonist in the next DA so I can poke him with holes.  :)

Out of curiosity, did you get this conversation with him?

The Dalish don't consider Fen'harel evil. They honor him, but in a more complicated way than the other creators. His help is considered to be a double edged sword- he's a trickster after all. They keep statues of him in their camps, but turn them looking out. All in all, his portrayal in the game is very compelling when compared to the legends. And in DAI, there is plenty of evidence that the Dalish conception of him is flawed- like, I dunno, the giant wolf statues literally everywhere in elven areas, in a protective stance.

I guess it all depends how you play the game. I had his approval so high by the time I made the templar choice, I could tell he was uneasy about the decision, but still was respectful of it.

It happened to me with blackwall. I must've recruited him to close to the transition to skyhold. Because when I chose what to say amongst the people of skyhold, he disapproved. Then when I went see him in the barn, he said he didn't like me.

Its all about approval.

I actually enjoyed my relationship with Solas. We started off hating each other to the point of verbal (all him) and physical blows, on my part.  But I respected him for his convictions and even his arrogance and I could tell he cared about people, and not just mages or just elves.  I also admired his "road less traveled" approach to magic and the fade.  He was what I essentially wanted all my Mages to become. A mage who seeks knowledge unashamed.  Oddly enough once I did befriend him, I felt like it was a genuine friendship, not close like Dorian, as you don't ever really gets to know what makes him tick (Ya know cause of plot reasons) but I do count him as one of the very few companions I liked in that game.

I take so long to finally do any of the main quests that I guess I've gotten so much approval from Solas that by the time I allied with the Templars (once), he still liked me. I always ally with the Grey Wardens and he still likes me. I just do a really good job of brown nosing him in every other way.  :P

In every play through so far I have always been courteous to Solas and befriended him. My current Inquisitor has preserved the Templar order, became a Templar herself and is romancing Cullen. Whenever I speak to Solas his words are filled with venom, he obviously hates me. I asked him to tell me more about himself and he snaps at me telling me, "why so your Templars can hunt down the apostate mage when this is all over? No, I will stay and help the Inquisition but my life is my own." Solas's intentions are not to help the Inquisition but to retrieve his orb. He is using the Inquisition for his own agenda. All the death and destruction brought on by Corypheus  can be laid at the feet of Solas. Dorian and Viv are now my default mages, I leave Solas back at Skyhold now. He served his purpose for the Inquisition by leading us to Skyhold, now he is of no use to us.

I recruited the Templars and the Wardens in my first playthrough and he still liked me, even though I also romanced Sera and told him to stuff his opinion of her. He's just so easy to get approval for. Ask a lot of questions, help some people, and activate some artifacts, and he'll respect you.

I guess I was going by what Tamlen said in Origins.

I decided this during my first play through. Well, hate might be a bit strong, but he's definitely the companion I like the least this time around.

While I dont hate Solas, I want to kill him. Not for what he have done, he helped me to fix it (but I think he only wanted his orb back), but for what he wants to do.
My Inquisitor fought hard to make Thedas go back to the status quo, now he wants to undo what he has done, so he must be stopped. Solas will never stop, he will make any sacrifice to fulfill his goals ( like the innocents at the Conclave and his friend Flemeth) and excuse it "because the people needs him", so there is only one way to stop him.
Solas must die.

You have to have some level of disapproval with him (don't know much) to get that conversation. So, if you've been his friend the whole time, that convo won't pop up.

(to Addai) Tamlen could be the poster child for the "Genre Blindness" trope.

Tamlen: "Hmm...Dark, strange cave... let's explore it!"

Tamlen: "Hmm... Giant spiders and coffins strewn about... let's explore more!"

Tamlen: "Hmm... Poisonous traps and the undead... let's find out what's behind the door they were guarding!"

Tamlen: "Hmm... a strange mirror in the middle of a room with skeletons surrounding it and a corrupted bear-creature with spikes... I'm going to check it out!

He wants to the elves to be the top dogs again, I think its very clear. And for them rise, the humans needs to fall.
If im wrong, I will not try to kill him, I already told that I dont hate him.

I don't dislike the little egg, but i find him dry sometimes. Though he can surprise me at moments, brining some incredible sass. Still i have yet to complete a playthrough with him in my party, must be a reason.

Interesting. I see just as many people insisting he doesn't care about the elves at all. edit- BTW, if it comes to that, I support your right to try to kill him. Though you see how far that went with Flemeth.

Yeah. I still bawled my eyes out when... you know. But yeah.

He said to Flemeth, "the People needs me", so he cares about them, but (IMO) he cant relate with neither the Dalish and the City Elves, he want the ancient elves back, and he will lead the elvenkind to their lost glory.
I dont want that, and there is only one way to stop him.

What do you expect? He's an apostate who ****** hates templars. You can't really expect him to be all farting rainbows and making sunshine bleed through his eyes when he feels like you made a poor decision. Cullen still gets pissy with me about the whole free mage thing and my character was ****** him. Companions in this game hate or love you based on decisions you make. Can't win 'em all.

You are right of course. How dare he not lick your feet after you walked all over his ideals and what he represents?

But what are his ideals? What does he represent?

Subsequent play-throughs are amusing once you know. I just finished Champions and Solas reamed out my Herald for allying with the Templars who could not be trusted and would betray me. I thought, "Pot meet kettle, Dread Wolf. We wouldn't be here if not for you."

I think he follows a lot of the trickster god archetypes, which makes him interesting. Tricksters are always their own worst enemies.

You know.. the inquisitor is actually the one responsible for the breach, the murder of the divine and everyone else who were at the temple :)

I don't know if the explotion would have happened if Cory had "unlocked" the orb.. but I thought it was highly amusing how none of the companions seem to care about that after they see the memory that the nightmare stole.

Solas can hardly be blamed for the destruction that Cory and the inquisitor have caused.

Yeah, the Inquisitor "being responsible for the breach" is actually a best case scenario. If Corypheus would have gotten what he wanted from the orb that was given to him by Solas, we'd be in the Darkest Timeline as seen in "In Hushed Whispers". If Solas would have gotten what he wanted, the Divine would still be dead and there would be incredible amounts of chaos/fallout because of that in addition to whatever the **** Solas is trying to do with the orb which I'm guessing is not going to end well for the average citizen of Thedas.

The companions don't care because they know for sure that, had the Inquisitor not interrupted Corypheus when they did, things would be about a million times worse for everyone, and that's even before they know that the Dread Wolf was involved.
