I'm in my 3rd PT, made different decisions, defeated the game in nightmare already, only 2 achievements left...

So, as I run out of ideas to make this PT different, I chose a dwarf (I had never played with one before) and named her Bianca. I'll be really disappointed if the developers didn't anticipate someone would come up with this and added some joke about it.

Anyone out there did this before?

There are no, nor will there ever be, references to first names.

You should have named her Helga. Then glared at Bianca when asking about her name. :P

(Also, Helga means holy in Icelandic and who is better to lead a religious group than the Holy one?)

"Nor will there ever be" doesn't sound good. This is something Bioware could implement for funny first names in future games, even if it was just in the written communication (obviously the expense of recording dialogs just for this would be too high).

Unknowingly, I named my first Inquisitor Abelas.  No name references, but it made the entire Mythal quest feel pretty weird.

I named mine 'Inquisitor.' Everything makes so much more sense now.

Hmm. My default Hawke's name was Vivien until the companions were revealed. I couldn't deal with there being my Vivien and THE Vivienne, so I went back and replayed her whole story with a different name...before I really understood that it wouldn't matter thanks to the Keep.

Boy, did I feel silly.

Meh, same as how Iron Bull will never acknowledge you having red hair even though he is very partial to that hair colour.

(SPOILER BELOW)

Just finished my FIRST playthrough, and as it happens, I *did* create a beautiful, sassy redheaded dwarf DW rougue artificer and named her Bianca, reacting to my frustration that Varric is not romanceable, so I am eminntly qualified to answer your question.:) Not sure if it happens in other playthroughs, but when Varric's Bianca shows up (no I didn't know - *awkward*!) I do say something like *Bianca*?, and she comments on the commonness of the name.

In retrospect I should have gone with my first inclination, to call her Grace.:)

I REALLY WANTED TO NAME MY HAWKE 'BETHANY' BUT  :crying:  :crying:  :crying:

'Bethany Hawke' just sounds awesome, right?

it's not fair it was taken, Hawke was born first

The only time I've ever seen a first name acknowledged is in a codex. I don't know if the technology is advanced enough to recognize custom names (or hair, etc) yet. Also there is the resources/return thing. Not sure its worth taking up the scripting/VO budget to put in something there for the handful of people who will name themselves after a character. Every bit counts after all.

It's definitely technical. Not that it's impossible to do, just hugely impractical when the PC is voiced.

Recall that Origins had no issues using the Warden's first name in-game because the PC was not voiced.

I remember people naming their femHawkes Bianca so that when Varric's combat dialogue triggered they'd get this:

"Bianca, you okay? Ohh, I'm sorry baby..."

"Bianca, you minx! That was beautiful!"

Etc., etc... :P

Haha!

I named my male elf Adan...then I met Adan the Alchemist in Haven I was like "Well at least my elf isn't as grumpy as this Adan!"   :D

What made it worse was my Inquisitor was a female.  That's what I get for pulling a Dalish word for a name.

Names showing up more than once in universe makes sense if you think about it, so picking a name that also ends up being used by an NPC is no big deal. Realistically most people would share their first name with at least thousands of other people. Alistair Theirin probably isn't the only Alistair in Thedas, for example.

You're right of course, but I tend to view my playthroughs as a story, and there you normally don't have two characters sharing a name.

In older games there were references. Well, one reference at least, in BG 2. As in, an NPC challenging you to the duel for impersonating him or something ;)

Perhaps a time will come again when some easter egg appears again.

The closest i've gotten to this is naming my Dark Ritual warden "Kieran" before we knew that Morrigan's child existed in Inquisition lol
