Certain games I find difficult to get into, like Divinity: Original Sin and Dark Souls. I think my problem is that these games are just really good at giving the player a large variety of well balanced skills, abilities and weapons all of which cover a very wide range of combat styles and its not easy to redo bits of your character once you've decided how to allocate those points. I think I took at least 15 hours just to leave the walls of cyseal because I was loafing about as an errand boy while trying to absorb all the information, deciding what skills I wanted and for who before finding some new skills to make me reconsider and on and on it went. I think I spent half my game in cyseal, which was about 1/4 of the game.

Did the same in Dark SOuls as well, just trying out all the weapon types and figuring out the move sets, and then finding smithys and other merchants with more weapons and more magic.

Really hard to get into games like this, but I think I just like to have the chance to be obsessive about them.

Yes, I want to be able to start a game of Dark Souls without feeling like I'm making decisions that will make me hate my life ten hours into the game.

Baldur's Gate was hard for me to get into.

After a bit I just fell in love though.

Same goes for Final Fantasies.

Mostly because I HATE RANDOM ENCOUNTERS!

Crusader Kings and Europa Universalis. They are too much to learn.

Arcanum, because the fighting system is just so... weird. once I got over it though, I loved it.

I've had a hard time getting into Wasteland 2 and Divinity: Original Sin. I have around 30 hours put into each of them, but I've just had a hard time keeping my interest up even though I don't think anything is really wrong with either. I like the gameplay, I like the settings, I like the relative meatiness of character building, crafting etc. but I just haven't gotten invested in the story or any characters, so there's little to drive me forward.

To compare it to BG2, if there was some side quest that I didn't care too much about or just randomly exploring and grinding for experience and loot, at least I still had a party full of different characters that I cared about and future dialogues and possible quests to look forward to with them.

You should play Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. That game is like heaven if you hate random encounters. All the enemies you fight are on the map.

Yeah, like Persona 3.

Was really glad that it didn't do an FF on me.

Else I would have never made it passed Tarturus.

Of the games that I love, the one with the highest learning curve is Jagged Alliance 2. So much stuff to keep track of in that game; the stats of your mercenaries, your weapons (they degrade over time, and have to be repaired or else they'll jam occasionally), the various ammunition types (hope you know the difference between 7.62 mm NATO and 7.62 mm WP), training militias, etc. JA2 is the only game I know of that handles healing in a semi-realistic way; namely, it's incredibly time-consuming. The best you can do in combat is to apply first aid and stop characters from losing more HP due to bleeding, etc. Out of combat, permanently restoring lost hit points takes hours if not days of gametime. These things tend to deter some of the people I know from loving the game as much as I do.

Out of games that I don't love, the hardest was Kerbal Space Program. I still haven't the faintest idea what to do in that game at all, whether it's building rockets, launching, landing, etc. I'm not sure I'd be able to ever find out unless I were a physics major. It kinda reminds me of the 90s-style flight simulators, which were so realistic and complex that any random combination of keys you could choose to hit simultaneously probably had some function assigned to it. At the end of the day, I'm probably just too stupid for the game.

Yep, Dark Souls. I tried Demon's Souls when it came out, returned it after 3 hours. I rented Dark, but never finished it until far later on in time. Similarly difficult to get into, but Dark was a more balanced version of said experience.

Nearly all of the BEMANI music games back in the day. Outside of Drums, I didn't have much experience in the gameplay they were offering. DJ Hero took a bit of work. I'm so used to the Type-Tastic mechanics of Beatmania IIDX, it was simultaneously refreshing and difficult. That game on Expert mode may not be as bad compared to IIDX, but it's pretty close.

Mostly because I HATE RANDOM ENCOUNTERS!

*a horde of giant enemies appear*

Record of Agarest War 1 and Zero have random encounters. Even on fixed map points. Essentially they split up your team across the map and then sometimes they trap your healer and no one can reach her. THEN THEY KILL HER AND YOU CAN'T SAVE HER!! THEN YOU'RE SCREWED BECAUSE THERE'S NO ONE TO RESURRECT AND HEAL YOUR PARTY *flips a table*

Agarest can be a trial to get into. You'll figure out a good strategy and then just enjoy the story and fan-service. Also the SJW calling you scum for playing a game that has female fanservice.

Divinity is easy to get into as long as you don't mistakenly miss or ignore the tutorial area, which I did in my first playthrough

I found the challenge of the Souls series very appealing - and the necessity of player communication outside of the game really encouraging. Absolutely loved getting help and sharing secrets.

I'm playing Divinity:Original Sin right now and it is indeed very complex and detailed, which makes it a tad harder to get going because of my OCD.

Final Fantasy 13 1 and 2. I hate random encounters. Reminded me of the forest and the caves in Pokémon WHICH I HATED.

I rather see the monster and have the option to fight or avoid.

They really ruin the pace sometimes.

I'm in Bran Bal, a story intense place, everything is getting into the mood and then

SWOOOOSH

Great game but I can't do crap in it. Too many buttons and strange up-down-left-right movements.

I learned this pretty fast though:
