For multiplayer, you need Skywing's Client Extension to be installed.

That's not entirely correct. The CE replaces Gamespy (which died) as a way to search for PWs, but you can always connect direct if you know the IP. CE also skips through the non-working Multiplayer login, but that can be handled in other ways, like amending the Host file, or just by waiting a minute.

Nevertheless I would recommend installing it if you are able.

I was trying to keep things simple, because it sounded like the poster was looking for a simple solution.

You may be right, seeing how he mangled Kwisatz. ;)  But then installing CE isn't a piece of cake, judging by the number of people who seem to have had problems in doing so.

I saved it in a spot and then extacted it, then I used the NWLauncer, to open the game, but when I try multiplayer it always trys to log into the gamespy server,  and never works, I eveb tried it the other way where you start the game normally and then use the alternate method, and yes the CleintExtensiom.hdl. is in the same file as the other one that is should be, plus my SOTZ will not update, it tells me to delete it and try again, so I went to the temp files and delete it, but the updater still wouldn't work, said that files need to be placed in the zipped file  or some such, which the temp file was there and was zipped but it said nothing was in it so apprantly the temp zip file was never downloaded into the file because it could not be extracted, I installed and used the Client extender, and tried to fix the updater no ones awnsers worked or I am doing it the wrong way, anyway, feel free to email me at tneesemail@gmail.com or maybe even we can speak over the phone to make it easier, because it is really messed up, SOTZ and MOTB all came with cd keys, but I ordered original NwN2 from engkland and they forgot the cd key so I used a cd key generator, but I did get the client extender to work once but never did again, maube I amplacin the files in the wrong place or something, anyway send me an email, and we will discuss how to get this resovled my thanks. and really I am decent at rp I know a lot of the races and their nicknames, earthkin, samman, halflings, Hins, I played NwN 1 for years and I could get into those files and cganhe cd keys and other options but they have made this way to complicated, why did they include gamespy in the game anyway, it was already not able to be used by NwN 1 so why try it with 2? makes no sense, anyway I do not understand how to change the clienbt server with the gamespy utilty. I know I am dumb, anyway, I am using windows seven with  a crappy amd vid card, and a I think a dual core that's like 2. something , if you need ore stats em-al me and ill send them to you, pleased help me get this upand going, the server I used yo play on NwN one hates me and they wish me gone, they have not benned me but they took away my use of the website forums and my tells in game, I was being ignored and bullied and I never broke any moajor rulkes, I can still playu it to this day, but I know they do not want me there, so iam trying this, please everyone help!

I start the launcher with a shortcut: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Atari\Neverwinter Nights 2\NWLauncher.exe" (with no special settings). You might have to adjust the path (and that of 'Start in') depending on where your NWN2 is installed. CE should be installed in the same directory as nwn2.exe.

Did you:

Double-click hdlinstall.reg to install support for .hdl files.

This needs to be done once.

Gamespy was a service used by many games. Unfortunately Gamespy went bust. Client Extension provides the same service however - if it's launched correctly.

Unfortunately I don't know if the extension will work if the game isn't fully updated to the final version after MotB and SoZ are installed.  And I've never done the manual updates since the auto-updater was still working when I installed the game, so I can't advise on the best way to do that.

I did what you said, created the shortcut, didn't help, when I launch the launcher it says the game exited early, then it still tries to connect to Gamespy, I installed it just like  in the read me, I even looked on youtube and did it that way, plus I do not know how to change a path , also it says I cannot update SOTZ, I did what it said to fix it as well, I deleted the file in the temp folder and tried to update again, still didn't help. I do not know what I am doing wrong, if someone can get on a call with me or something please, I really want to play one of the multiplayer servers, because the NwN 1 server I play does not want me there anymore, even though I have not been banned, they make it known I am not wanted by leaving me out of adventures and other things. please help me get on , Thanks

You seem to have a whole heap of problems, but the first one is "I cannot update SOTZ", by which I presume you mean SOZ (Storm Over Zehir).

What you should do is install all the games in order and then update. The updates can be found on here. You need to put in the correct game, platform, language and select XP2 from Reqs. This should leave you with 9 files to download. They need to be installed in order. The best way to patch is to use this file. Detailed instructions are included on the page.

If you can get this to work, i.e. you can launch and play SoZ and can see the version as 1.231765 then we can move to the next stage. BTW please use paragraphs when you post - it is too hard to read at present.

here this may help, I copied it from the updater: well now it will not let me even paste it . god this is so messed up, someone really needs to make an all around fix for this game,m I cannot believe how many problems it has.

Anyway it says unable to read zip file: temp\nwn2_pcx2_englishvofx_from1201541.zip the file may be corrupted. you may want to try deleting this file and then attempt to update youre game again

The pacth has been aborted 9.

that's exactly what it says on the updater

When you install SoZ, SoZ deletes the "VO_X1.zip" file (the voice overs for MotB).  This deletion was not intended.  "nwn2_pcx2_englishvofx_from1201541.zip" was a "hotfix" to put the file back in, and only that file.

What does this mean?  There is a workaround, which is simple.

- Install NWN2

- Install MotB

- Navigate to the NWN2 game install/data folder

- copy the "VO_X1.zip" file

- paste the copied "VO_X1.zip" file somewhere else

- Install SoZ, which updates you to 1.20 (and removes the original VO_X1.zip file)

- put the copy of the VO_X1.zip (you just made) back into the NWN2 installation folder/data

- continue patching without including "nwn2_pcx2_englishvofx_from1201541.zip"

(You don't need it, which means you do not need to download the ~333,678kb file)

(Also, it means you don't need to risk a corrupted download of that big file)

This is a trick we did straightaway

Anyway it says unable to read zip file: temp\nwn2_pcx2_englishvofx_from1201541.zip the file may be corrupted

What does this mean?  There is a workaround, which is simple....

There was a bug in the SoZ installation which deleted a file it shouldn't. I'm not sure whether the GoG version still has this bug. It's easy to check - VO_X1.zip should be in the Data subfolder. I would guess that the GoG version is fixed - this means you do not need the nwn2_pcx2_englishvofx_from1201541.zip patch. You can delete it if you have the file and try updating without that patch.

Yes it's buggy. It's why we refer to the makers as Bugsidian. BTW GoG has its own forums and help is often available for their own versions.
