Good thing this isn't real life then as opposed to a piece of written fiction. You may as well be wondering why Homer Simpson is only ever seen in his white shirt and blue jeans on normal occasions.

:D  :D  :D  :D

It's a bit sad that you have to explain the obvious so many times. One would think that people who play video games would know what an iconic look is (and anyone who played DA:O would know that Morrigan is the only character in that game who had one).

I agree completely, but do you think she should be confined to a single expression of "screw the rules?" I'm basically suggesting she'd be more likely to have an entire "screw the rules" wardrobe.

Characters having a distinct and consistent look is just how things are done in videogames. No-one questions why Mario always wears his blue overalls and red hat, or why Ryu always wears his white gi; its the look that the character is known for.

The question is not so much "what is an iconic look" but "what are the merits of an iconic look"?

As I see it, if an iconic look raises questions like "Why the heck is she wearing the same thing after 10 years", then it may not been the best idea to keep that look from the old game. Besides raising plausibility issues, an argument can be made that it is appropriate to let character development be reflected in characters' outfits.

Personally, I'm ok with her outfit, even though I find it slightly incongruous for the aforementioned reason that 10 years have passed, and I would've preferred exactly an outfit that contrasts with her old one. At least Bioware has made a minimum concession to "dressing for the occasion" - a principle that I value much higher than "iconic look" - by giving her a dress for the Winter Palace. I wish they had given female Inquisitors the same option.

And yet the Mortal Kombat characters are tweaked on a regular basis. Sub-Zero famously appeared without a mask for the first time in MK3. The characters don't drift too far away from a central basic design because the developers understandably want to maintain a certain level of consistency in their appearance, but they're not afraid to muck around a bit.

Again, I'm not suggesting Morrigan be drastically overhauled. But I see no good reason not to experiment with her clothing a little just for the sake of variety.

These characters aren't the Flintstones or the Mario characters where trying to apply this sort of logic would be pure folly. They're meant to be somewhat rooted in reality. After all, we spend a great deal of time here dissecting their personalities and motivations, and arguing whether or not something someone said or did was in character. But when it comes to the question of a character electing to wear the same clothes for a decade, the answer is "Because Mario?"

Okay. Literally every returning ME2 character has their same ME2 outfit in ME3. It's so they can be easily recognized, because that look is iconic to them. Morrigan in her DAO clothing is unmistakable.

Would you like your mum with her boobs hanging out when you're with her? OMG that poor child must be so embarrassed.

I-c-o-n-i-c l-o-o-k.

Unfortunately, yes. It's one thing I kinda wish the western devs got over already; or at least took notice of eastern shows and games which long ago discovered that it's perfectly possible to have characters wear more than single set of clothing over the course of the game/show and still remain perfectly recognizable.

DAI sort of dabbles with it, having two somewhat different outfits for the PC and companions, so maybe they'll build upon it.

The iconic look of Morrigan for DAO players possibly induces some kind of dopamine recognition/ pleasure stimulus. Maybe. I just accepted the narrative as "after court politics Morrigan dresses casual", but now you mention it, I guess your critique could be valid. But after having to adjust to soo.. many new characters seeing old ones like Varric and Morrigan is kind of comforting in a stimulus response kind of way.

Iconic clothing.

Though why they scaled down the size of female breasts in this game is weird.

Anora's and Morrigan's look far bigger in Origins.

Oh no, please. Let's not.

I can scarcely believe I'm saying this, but I'm sick of talking about women's breasts.

I find it amusing how the BSN has a trillion different topics/threads... but really, there's only about five.

I was fine with Morrigan's clothing in Inquistion (being her iconic look and all), but after reading this thread I thought the devs could've given her the robes she wore in DAO's Sacred Ashes trailer (image after spoiler button):

Spoiler

Its more mature, more covered but still very morrigan-ish.

Mother of Christ, people need to learn how characters are designed.

But what do I know, I've only taken 6 years of art classes.

No offense but you should ask for your money back because characters are not designed base on their clothing. It has been like over 7+ years since Origins and Morrigan still wears the same clothing.

It's been 7+ years and all the Wardens still dress like Wardens, Varric's still wearing that same shirt and jacket, and Templars and mages still wear robes. Time to get my money back.

It is actually a rather common practice in visual media. To give characters outfits that support their characterization is also not a bad idea. Problems start when these outfits clash with other aspects of storytelling and the writers set questionable priorities.

I guess Morrigan has just closet full of same patched skirts, bra's and whatever that's top piece is called ^^;

I'd have prefered if she had changed clothing cause although the look is iconic, well it has been over 10 years. Iconic look vs realism I guess and iconiq look won, or then designers were just lazy and didn't come up with new iconic look that could have been improved version of first one.

Back in Origins I could understand Morrigans lack of fashion clothing due to the fact that she was living out in the sticks with her mother, Flemeth, but now since shes living it up in the royal palace by being an advisor to Empress Celene, arriving in the Orlesian court in 9:37 Dragon. You would think that she would get herself a decent clothing to wear outside the palace.  But no. She still wears her same clothing as she did back in Origins.

Now

According to the concept art book for Inquisition, they drew up some concepts for new clothing for Morrigan (keeping in touch with her character's array of colors and whatnot) but in the end decided to go with her signature look. While I can understand their decision, I have to agree, I would've have liked to see some evolution in her appearance

I thought that some of the concept art for new looks for her looked nice - but I don't know what exactly went on in the final decision process :/

Well I'm glad they stuck with her iconic look and the down size to the females breasts was quite refreshing imo.

Let's see. Romance threads, inclusivity threads, sexual objectification threads, "why can't we have Origins 2?" threads, wimminz aren't pretty enough threads, too many fetch quests threads, mages vs templars threads.

You give the BSN no credit. There's at least seven!   :P
