The best I found was this, the Caliban sword from the second dragon in Emprise du Lion:

You need to use cheat engine to get the actual sword schematic. If you are not playing on PC, Caliban is the Tevinter sword, you have to slay Kaltenzahn (lvl 21) in emprise du lion.

To me the Iron Bull personal quest was the worst one in the game. It was not poorly written just executed badly. Like OP says you could easily save them as the situation was. It should have had more of a reason to be concerned for the life of the Chargers and added a more dramatic effect to it. I love the chargers, but they had a dissapointing send off, if you choose that route. 

 

I got it from grinding for like 3 hours, 

(Ive used the cheat engine since because gringing for 3 hours to try and find a schematic isnt my idea of fun) but the sword is definitely available via random loot

The grip can be bought at Suldein Keep, the blade schematic is rare but v very good version can be picked up off the 2nd Dragon in Emprise Du Lion

I might be wrong because i have used cheat engine (because really by the time of your 3rd play through who wants to grind for 6 hours for a helmet) But im pretty sure i got the tevinter longsword without using the cheat engine. (PC Player)
