I can't go anywhere in the story without them. How many do I need to get me through to the end?
should I just spend a few hours grinding up power points?

I wouldn't. Everything you do at all, from closing rifts to doing sidequests to doing companion quests to marking landmarks etc. gives 'em to you. After the first quest or so that required them, I always had plenty through normal (by no means completionist) gameplay.

I don't have an exact number for you, but I wouldn't worry about it. Power is ridiculously plentiful. I am about halfway through the story on my second playthrough and I have 151 power from closing rifts, completing side quests, all that jazz, which is more than I'll ever need. You'll be fine.

Don't worry, you'll have more powerpoints than Microsoft - I had 400+ at the end of my first playthrough.

I've made calculations once, but I'm not sure I remember it right. The main story requires something like ~150 points total I think, but it's only the main story - no locations and other researches.
As mentioned above, the game does not suffer from the lack of points, even my PTs (far from 'perfect' ones, I doubt I had more than 2\3 of the overall content, some zones were barely visited) resulted in ~200 spare points at the end. No points grinding on purpose, casual questing (I mean I only do what I want to), occasional closing the rifts, plenty of table missions.

Can you spend power on anything apart from main missions? I can't remember.

unlocking optional side areas which takes 1 power.

So what's the point in having a ridiculous amount of power available if you cant spend most of it?
They should have had a special store for epic weapons/armour which you can use your power to buy imo.

No idea. Should be able to speed up wartable with power.

Get the 4 points you need to go to Val Royeaux, everything else will come just from playing the game. If your shy on power you'e probably trying to bypass 80% of the content.

The point is to let you do the main missions without having to close every last rift in every last location and do all the inane side quests. If you had to collect all the power points available in the game to unlock the final mission then I doubt anyone would ever get to see it.
Um.
I'm not asking for that. I'm asking for a store where you can exchange power for epic weapons/armour. Use up all the excess power you've fought through the game to get.
