Chapter List:

Spoiler

No, I have not abandoned my Warband: Let's Play (yet).
Yes, all my Let's Plays before that are more or less doomed.

Anyway, I have been mocking SJWs too much in my LPs and even though they deserve every bit of mockery I can muster (and more), it seems a little depressing. Especially when my earlier Let's Plays were more community oriented. So why don't we try something less depressing and something more community oriented?

Let's try Darkest Dungeon!

Darkest Dungeon is a challenging gothic roguelike turn-based RPG about the psychological stresses of adventuring.
Recruit, train, and lead a team of flawed heroes through twisted forests, forgotten warrens, ruined crypts, and beyond. You'll battle not only unimaginable foes, but stress, famine, disease, and the ever-encroaching dark. Uncover strange mysteries, and pit the heroes against an array of fearsome monsters with an innovative strategic turn-based combat system.

The Affliction System – battle not only monsters, but stress! Contend with paranoia, masochism, fear, irrationality, and a host of gameplay-meaningful quirks!

Striking hand-drawn gothic crowquill art style

Innovative turn-based combat pits you against a host of diabolical monsters

Ten (and counting!) playable hero classes, including Plague Doctor, Hellion, and even the Leper!

Camp to heal wounds or deliver inspiring speeches.

Rest your weary, shell-shocked characters in town at the Tavern or the Abbey to keep their stress in check.

Classic CRPG and roguelike features, including meaningful permadeath, procedural dungeons, and incredible replay

Darkest Dungeon is partially funded by Kickstarter and is currently available with Steam's Early Access program. You can find out more information and/or purchase the game by clicking here.

Ruin has come to our forum. You remember our venerable threads? Opulent and imperial, standing proudly above the moor. I lived all my years in this ancient, rumour-shadowed forum. Fattened by decadence and luxury. And yet, I began to tire of conventional posting. Singular, unsettling semi-confirmed tales suggested that the forum itself was a gateway to some fabulous, and un-nameable power.

watch_what_you_pray_for____by_cribs-d71c

With Relic and Ritual, I bent every effort towards excavation and recovery of those long, buried secrets. Exhausting what remained of our good fortune on.. swarthy posters and sturdy memes.

SLO0pgh.png?1

At last, in the salt-soaked, lowest crags, beneath the oldest locked threads, we unearthed that damned portal of antediluvian evil...

9VgOz8O.jpg

Our every step unsettled the ancient earth. But we were in a realm of death, and madness.

C0WUhk2.jpg

In the end, I alone fled, laughing and wailing through those blackened arcades of antiquity. Up till consciousness failed me...

Wallpaper_bg.jpg

You remember our venerable threads? Opulent and imperial, standing proudly above the moor. It is a festering abomination! I beg you, return home, claim your birthright and deliver our forum, from the ravenous, clutching shadows...

...

Valiant heroes of the BSN, step forward and claim your birthright. Free this dreadful place of the curse inflicted upon it, and return the BSN to a place most pure and wondrous. Or die in the attempt.

Heroes! Step forth!

This God-Fearing Warrior of Light is a devoted Crusader for Liftus Christ and the Church of Latter Day Reps. Bunz' training regimen has made him resolute, he can withstand insults, troll attempts and flames much better than any normal man. However, he does have the tendency to 'borrow' things without returning them.

M9GmWAY.jpg

Jock Cranley, the Highwayman, is a Known Cheat. His Hard Noggin' and Quick Reflexes have kept him alive in many a forum scrap. He is a Deadly fellow, so try not to get caught by him unawares. He posts to kill.

cteI2It.jpg

Cosplaying as the team's Plague Doctor, Cassandra Saturn uses powerful skills to embolden her allies, or poison her foes. Her personal experience allows her to Scout out traps for the party. A Weald Adventurer, she does not fear the woodlands, regardless of how dark and twisted it may be. To the contrary, she has a fascination with evil things and her Dark Temptation may be become a problem in the end.

t0Zx01s.jpg

mousestalker rounds up the BSN team. As a Vestal, she heals the teams and helps keep them alive, while being capable of dealing fatal blows to the Undead. She is a renowned Slayer of Beasts, which comes as a surprise because she also suffers from Zoophobia. In any case, she is also a Weald Phobe, preferring to stay in less forested areas... like graveyards... and ruins...

So there we have it! BSN's best and brightest! With these fine warriors at the helm, they'll be sure to succeed in clearing out all dungeons and ruins of the evils that lurk on the BSN.

Time to embark on the first cleansing!

How good is this game? I've heard polarizing things. Some say that it's another kickstarter/early access success while others say it's a luck-based mess.

It has a heavy reliance on RNG but it's also very fun. At the moment it probably lacks variety and depth. In a game about dungeoneering, the dungeons are straightforward, lack enemy types and special events.

But I wouldnt say it is a mess at all. It's a bit like Blood Bowl in the sense that the RNG can ruin you or save you. The idea is that you plan your best with the RNG in mind. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

I've only played a couple of hours though, so that's just a first impression.

^Game is a bit too easy when you get the right skills and set ups (which you can be lucky and get those skills right off the bat)

A few hints for you if you plan to take this further:

Lepers. They are virtually useless without support. Get them Jesters to play music all day and buff them.

Vestals. They are not too brilliant once your teams start 'executing with impunity'. Do not invest too much into their gear or skills.

Crusaders. Get 4 of them if you can and get them all holy lances and the leader camping skill. Enjoy ignoring stress and party positioning as you lance your way to victory.

But all in all, all classes are useful one way or the other. And remember, kick hopeless party members. Sometimes you do not have the time and/or the money to cure syphilis on every turn.

Eh, I can deal with that. If I can play FTL without complaining, I can probably take this game's RNG beating.

Chapter 1:

0Cmdj1J.jpg

The team is ready to depart on their first expedition.

They take their first steps deep into the long-abandoned ruins.

CPrWB6m.jpg

One of the mechanics in this game is called Stress. It accumulates the longer you are inside a dungeon. It especially accumulates when you move in low-light or dark areas. For this reason, you need to keep track of the current light levels. The more time you spend in a dungeon, the darker it gets. On the other hand, bright light may bring the party some bonuses like you can see in the screen. You can temporarily increase light levels using torches, so it's advised that you keep purchase plenty of torches during the provision phase, before you start dungeoneering.

You can also gain stress by receiving critical hits, getting hurt by traps, etc. Once your stress bar is full, your character will receive an affliction. While this is sometimes positive, it is almost certainly negative, and by suffering an afflication, you increase the stress levels of all other party members until you are out of the dungeon.

OGnJIdq.jpg

The Lobbyists tread carefully, exploring as much of the Ruins as they dare.

kBomf8y.jpg

0FpOxAE.jpg

"Ooh shiny, think I'll just take this..."

In some cases, this turned out for the better. In other cases, well, not so much.

I15Gkc2.jpg

The spiders attack ferociously, spitting their vile venom all over the Lobbyists, Bunz copping the brunt of the attack.

FvOUOb0.jpg

qQPrHJE.jpg

"Ughhh... Did we just stumble into Australia or something? Die!"

Ir1u7I2.jpg

Cranley hacks and slashes his way through the eight-legged menaces. It isn't long before the rest of the party follow suit and dispatch the hostile spiders.

h1aRVfh.jpg

Grossed out by the creepy crawlies, mousestalker reminds the other Lobbyists that they were there to clear the rooms only. Anything more would be a calculated risk.

hHd3q9n.jpg

"We go in, kill enemies and leave. Got that? I don't want to stay here a second longer than I need to."

Cassandra disagreed.

jXr8iEi.jpg

"Hehee. Why are you so afraid? I'm not a coward. Let's explore more!"

0FpOxAE.jpg

"Aww no, you have the luxury of saying that because you're 3rd in line. I'm at the front, and I say we leave when we can. Jock, what's your opinion?"

jXr8iEi.jpg

"B-but Bunz sweetie, I l-l-like you...."

qQPrHJE.jpg

"I don't really care. I just don't want to have to carry all your corpses back to town. Sure, safe route seems good."

A dejected Cassandra loses a bit of morale in the exchange - Bunz had ignored her. But she, and the other Lobbyists press on.

pOEtdP6.jpg

They explored Room after Room after Room, walking through countless hallways, slowly building up their stress level.

But, they finally find what they are looking for.

ACFFUBZ.jpg

hHd3q9n.jpg

"Okay, this is it. We're killing these shifty hostiles and then we're out!"

The Lobbyists spring into action.

Cassandra steps forward, throwing a Plague Grenade at the two smaller brigands.

6sD3RtK.jpg

She's successful and the two henchman are Blighted. They're sure to die a quick, but painful death.

mousestalker calls on Cranley and the two perform a fearsome combo. Calling on her Divine powers, she unleashes a blinding flash of light, stunning the big man.

PjxjYmf.jpg

Cranley wastes no time in taking advantage, aiming with precision and connecting with a vicious slash for critical damage.

17KICh2.jpg

The two visibly more confident and less stressed as a result.

sh2ohx9.jpg

The Brigand Bloodletter is furious, lashing out at the entire party with his multi-headed Flail.

EUWKlNZ.jpg

0FpOxAE.jpg

"Enough!"

Bunz swings his mighty sword and Smites the enemy in one fell blow.

ii62BQJ.jpg

With the large Bloodletter dead, the smaller Brigands quickly fall, either to the Lobbyists' martial power, or to Cassandra's Plague Grenade.

They start to make their way back to town. They may not have explored every inch of this ruin, or gathered every heirloom or treasure. But they did enough. They did enough.

You have yet to make an LP that is better than your JA2 LP. Maybe this one will, Crusty.

Also.

I'm picking the next BSNer to use after Cassandra dies.
