Chapter 14:

 
With Sim, Johnnie Walker, Fast Jimmy and Dominus arriving back at town bruised, battered and mentally unstable, the other Lobbyists quickly treat their wounds and rush them to the sanitarium and the Abbey. The treatments weren't cheap, but no expense would be spared for the heroic Sim and his party.

Letting the others recuperate, E-Ro picks up the torch of leadership for the week, bringing Despair Demon, mybudgee and Su Lu Pi into the Warrens for an expedition.

With Recon and Dobby spending all their time in the Tavern getting drunk, there was no one else to lead the Lobbyists and E-Ro fancied himself as a better leader than Sim.


"Sim has experience... in failure. Meanwhile, Recon is too drunk to lead. Here's my chance to prove that I am indeed the Lord's Chosen!"


 
Taking a deep breath and praying to his Domina to watch over him, E-Ro leads the team down into the Sewers.
 

 
The Lobbyists explore the many putrid pipes and pathways, overcoming many obstacles.
 

 
And dealing with various traps.
 

 
All of which take a toll on their mental health. So when the opportunity for battle presents itself, they take it.
 

 
Despair Demon jumps into action, slashing away at the large Brigand Bloodletter.
 

 
However, the group is caught by surprise by a devastating blast from the enemy gunman.
 

 
As the stress levels increase for the Lobbyists, Despair Demon doubles down on his precision attacks, slashing the Bloodletter over and over again.
 

 
The bulky Brigand eventually falls to his wounds.
 

 
With the way clear, the other Lobbyists make their move. budgee strikes hard, and kills his opponent in one blow.
 

 

"Hah! Suck on that!"

While E-Ro takes it upon himself to exact revenge on the Brigand gunman, and Smites him with righteous fury.
 


The Lobbyists high five after the battle and make their way into the next room.



Catching their would be foes by surprise.



Su Lu Pi throws a couple of bombs that blind their enemies with light, knocking out one enemy and stunning the other.



E-Ro grips his sword, and strikes hard.


"My woman is her own army, and so am I! Hyargh!"



Meanwhile, mybudgee shrugs off a disgusting vomit attack to kill his opponent.





With the battle swinging in favour of the Lobbyists, the Swine Drummer beats on his instrument, hoping to rally the beasts. Stopping the team in their tracks, the sound of the drums are deep and ominous, playing on their minds. Accompanied by guttural growls, the drum beat is echoed by the small room, magnifying the effect.




"Drums... drums in the deep."

Wondering how many more groups they'd have to fight, E-Ro's resolve is tested.



And is found wanting.



E-Ro's rationality abandons him.



Despair Demon moves in and slits the throat of the Drummer, ending the battle.



However the damage to E-Ro is done. As he leads them past the room into the sewer paths, he shows signs of being delusional.




"Great. Our 'glorious' leader has gone insane."


"It's alright. If it all goes south, I can transcend my humanity and save us all."


"Are you okay, Despair Demon?"


"So now the insane count is two."

Despair Demon seemed unfazed at the accusation.


"You'll see."

The Lobbyists step into the next room and prepare for the upcoming battle.



The Cultists go for budgee first, fiercely slashing at the Bounty Hunter.




"By the Domina, budgee! What are you doing? Stop dragging your feet!"

Faced with a sneering leader and repeated attacks, budgee reaches his mental limit.



And the Bounty Hunter's resolve breaks in two, giving into his fear.




"I don't want to die. Insane leader, insane teammates and everyone is after me. I want out!"

Su Lu Pi throws her blinding grenades, hoping to keep their enemies distracted.



But it fails, and the Swine Drummer starts to play an all too familiar tune.



Too busy wrestling the thoughts in his unquiet mind, Despair Demon doesn't let on how stressed he actually is. But he too reaches a breaking point. And he succumbs to the swirl of negativity going on in his head.



With the team's mental state in shambles, E-Ro begins to hallucinate, becoming more and more disconnected with reality.


"Domina? Domina is that you?"

Su Lu Pi watches on in horror, weighing up her options. Leaving the three crazies to their own insanity was becoming an attractive option for the aspiring politician. She didn't want to die here. She had an election to win in 2016.

Despair Demon and mybudgee stay close together away from the fray of battle, leaving the Plague Doctor vulnerable.

But before she decides to cheese it, E-Ro lets out a fearsome roar.


"RAAOORRGGHHH!! DOMINA! COME BACK! RELEASE HER YOU SWINE!!"

The Crusader goes berserk, jumping right into the middle of the enemy formation, swinging and slashing with reckless abandon.



The beasts hesitate for a moment, and giving E-Ro the opening he needs to continue his assault.



E-Ro continues to swing until none of their enemies are left standing.



Huffing, puffing and breathing heavily, E-Ro sits on his haunches, completely exhausted by his heroics.

As Su Lu Pi looks at the enemy dead, and at her teammates, she realises that it's best not to tempt fate and drags the Lobbyists out of the Warrens.

They won, but were it not for E-Ro's rampage, it would've been a very close call. An escape from death more than a victory. However, Su Lu Pi would take the escape any day of the week.

Chapter 14:

 

"It's alright. If it all goes south, I can transcend my humanity and save us all."


"Are you okay, Despair Demon?"


"So now the insane count is two."

Despair Demon seemed unfazed at the accusation.


"You'll see."

And when I do they'll beg me to save them... and I'll consider it. Though not as much as I would if they believe me in the first place...

E-Ro is a pretty decent warrior, but let's just hope he doesn't go insane. The Lord of Light will help guide him!

Just a heads up, 3 new classes and new hero color schemes are coming up in an update fairly soon. No word on how it will effect older saves, so might want to disable auto updates for now.

Thanks for the warning.

I have a copy of the current build on a laptop where I only use Offline Mode which I can continue the game on if my Steam copy updates and it no longer accepts old saves, but I'm lax when it comes to saving my chapters. I'll be a bit more vigilant about it.

Are you much further along in the actual game than the current LP's? I feel like there are a number of boss fights I know of that we haven't got to yet.

I think he plays some, enough for maybe 2 chapters maybe, but not much more, cause he stopped with his other ones cause he went too far ahead and had too much to write. So casual is he.

Chapter 15:

 
After a late night out celebrating with the returning Lobbyists, Sim tosses and turns while trying to sleep. He's haunted by the ghost of comrades past.


"You let me die, Sim. It's all Ogre..."


"You let me die, Sim."


"You let me die, Sim."


"You let us die, Sim."


"Nooooo... please... I'm sorry... just leave me be..."
 

"Only if you prevent the resurrection of Zombie T, for no one in the Lobby can stand up to his "Willie Shredder" attack."
 

"B-but I did! We killed the Necromancer Apprentice! I redeemed myself!"
 

"Apprentices have Masters, Sim. But go ahead and think you're safe. I'll enjoy seeing you in Hell..."
 
Sim jolts awake. He looks at the clock, 4am. The Leper wipes his brow, sweaty, as he expected. Sim gets out of bed and begins morning meditation. With a dream like that, there was no going back to sleep. The stress of leadership, the pain of blame. They're burdens, Sim says to himself, but they're my burdens.
 
...
 

"Whaddya mean a tab?!"
 
The Hellion was furious. The Barkeep had called for the Lobbyists to pay out their bar tab. He had been upset at how many people were frequenting the establishment because of how few were paying upfront.
  
Pulling out a long sheet of paper with handwritten notes, the Barkeep calculates his owed amount and ends with a number in the thousands. Thousands of gold coins. Shocked, Johnnie Walker shoves the Barkeep over and looks at the notes. She squints her eyes, and realises that two names come up an awful lot. Inquisitor Recon and DobbySaurus.

Rounding everyone up, she yells at the Crusader and the Grave Robber, whose seniority meant that they should've known better. Dominus suggests they pay the tab using the expedition money, reasoning that the hit to their wallets would be better than the Tavern being off-limits for the Lobbyists.

Emptying out their entire stash, they still lack the funds to pay the Barkeep. The Barkeep not willing to budge on the price, and even barring them from entering until they pay the full amount.


"W-well it's not my fault this happened! It's just that I haven't been out on an expedition recently. You tell me what else is there to do here besides praying, drinking and fornicating? Tell me that! Besides, Recon's the heaviest drinker."

Too drunk to convincingly argue the point, Recon merely grunts.

Walker sighs in frustration, she had been planning to have a nice straight drink of Chivas Regal, a fantastic tasting scotch whisky she had heard about from mybudgee. Placing her hands on Dobby's and Recon's shoulders, she drags them away from their stools and announces her intention to go on an expedition.

Recon takes the lead, and asks for volunteers. Walker was desperate for a drink, and Dobby did feel guilty about running up a tab, but none of the others were all too inspired by Recon's slurred speech and pledge to drink to Luna afterwards.

Luckily, the Lobbyists found their fourth member.


"Hi, I was passing through on my way to the DA:I section and I heard some sort of disturbance. Is everyone okay?"


"Awesome! Thanks for volunteering!"


"Huh?"



A man of few words, Dermain is an Occultist, often using his studies into the occult as a means of getting into the heads of other people, his real hobby. A Lurker by nature, he's not one to step out into the light to engage enemies and as such, he has a somewhat Weak Grip on Life, preferring to stay back behind the safety of the shadows and anonymity.

Having barely a coin to their name, the team set out to find the biggest amount of treasure in the shortest amount of time that they could. Recon suggests they take on a Veteran level mission for the extra loot and the others, strapped for cash, agree.



Taking the bare minimum of supplies with the little money they have left, the Lobbyists into the Weald on a very desperate mission - to earn enough gold to pay off their bar tab.

They're immediately greeted with foes.



Recon though, dispatches of them easily.


"Grr. It's bad enough I'm hungover but now I have to fight Wild Dogs and Cultists? It's as if I've come to tumblr. I swear on Luna's hooves I'm getting out of here to enjoy my vodka once we have enough loot."



While the battle-hardened Lobbyists seemed to handle things okay, Dermain was freaking out. The occultist didn't even volunteer for the expedition, but was dragged into it anyway. His deteriorating mental state was obvious for all to see.


"..."

The next room they enter doesn't offer the Lobbyists any respite, only more fighting.



The mangy beasts are evasive, easily avoiding Walker's intense Glaive attacks.



And hunting as a pack, they inflict serious damage on the team.




"Dobby! Are you okay? I'm coming to hel- aww shiit!"



With the other Lobbyists bleeding profusely from their bites and wounds, the stress of battle pushes Dermain to his mental limit. The Occultist rises to the occasion.





The Lobbyists rally, with Recon leading from the front.




"Die, you filthy Dogs! Go back to Australa or whatever hellhole you belong in!"

They fight a long and hard battle, and the Lobbyists eventually prevail. Tired, wounded but still determined, they push onward through the forest.



It isn't long until they're ambushed however, by more Wild Dogs and a terrifyingly large monster.




"Aww man, I wish we were back in town, JW. Drinking that scotch whisky you told me about."


"Inorite, but don't worry Dobby dear, we'll be back soon. After we're done with these shiits."

Dermain opens proceedings, casting a powerfully debilitating spell on the swamp monster.



Recon follows up by hitting it in the head with his sword pommel, stunning the beast temporarily.

However, one of the Dogs darts through the Lobbyist formation and attacks Dermain head on, the creature striking at his throat and scoring a critical hit.



Dermain falls to the ground, unable to defend himself, and while Dobby chases away the mangy beast, the bleeding could not be stopped. The Occultist had suffered a fatal blow, and soon succumbs to his wounds.


"Pity... I would've liked to live longer."



The hostiles give the Lobbyists no time to grieve Dermain's passing as they intensify their attacks, pushing back the survivors.





Walker is knocked to the ground and struggles to get up, while Recon grits his teeth and charges at the huge beast. He swings hard, taking it down in one fell blow.



Dobby meanwhile, had her hands full with the quick footed Wild Dog.



It attacks the Grave Robber viciously.



Dobby loses her balance, and desperate to gain separation, uses a technique to stun the Dog while slipping away unharmed.



Unfortunately it fails and the Dog continues to nip at Dobby's heels. Recon steps in and tries to put the animal down.



But his large and cumbersome sword fails to connect with the beast, and it charges once more at the helpless Dobby.



The savage beast rips into her throat and kills her on the spot. Recon flinches, he didn't expect Dobby to die. Walker on the other hand was in shock. Her drinking buddy's lifeless face a sight the Hellion was not prepared to see.

Walker picks herself up of the ground and decapitates the Dog.




"FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!! DAMMIT! HOLY ****! GIVE ME BACK MY DOBBY!!"

She continues to hack away at the dead animal, completely butchering it's remains in a spray of blood and body parts. Disturbing the Crusader infinitely more than the loss of their teammates.


"Y-you might wanna settle down."


"I'M TOO PISSED TO GIVE A SHIIT!!"


"Well then, we have enough gold to pay off our bar tab. Let's bury these two and go back to town and drink."

The Hellion nods, and after regaining her composure, she helps Recon bury Dermain and DobbySaurus. They leave the Wealds unsuccessful in their mission, but with enough money to pay down their debts and fund the next expedition. In retrospect, it wasn't worth the cost. But it was too late to bring Dermain and Dobby back.

RNG screwed me over with Dobby. Dog has like 2 HP left, and it dodges 3 attacks in a row, even though Dobby herself is accuracy boosted from Throwing Daggers. Incrediblly bad luck. I can't even blame Sim this time around lol.
 
Okay tactically it was just a bad all around decision, I should've just used fresh off the caravan fodder teams to get easy money and disperse them afterwards. But I don't like the idea of having non-BSNers fight, and I'm certainly not trying to make BSNers who I throw away after one week. I'll probably do it in future behind the scenes though if I can't justify low funds in any kind of story I dream up.

Why on earth did you take on a veteran level mission?

 

Lower-leveled party members gets hugely increased stress gains and the monster generated can be far tougher.

 

The game has no time limit. GRIND. MILK the easy missions for all they are worth.
