Has anyone ever obtained a useful unique out of a chest? I always end up with low level garbage not even runes.

In my 700 hours ,I got six or seven purple items from chests.Most of them were runes and two 2-H swords.

I've probably opened hundreds of chests and scrapped even more items.  Occasionally, I get something I can actually use.  I haven't really been 'trying' to get anything, though, and I find that once I do try to get a specific item, I'll most likely never get it.

 

Moral of this: feign disinterest and you'll get the stuff you want.  RNGesus likes to troll, acting like you don't care about what you get takes away from its enjoyment.

RNGesus has been trolling me with 1-handers and 2-handers, though.  All the unique 1-handers and 2-handers I get are completely outclassed by my rare 1-hander and 2-hander (Firm Tournament Waraxe and Sundering respectively).  Really want the Sulevin Blade...

If this is true I'd be drowning in purples, because I skip pots like crazy.  I'm just tired of smashing them, I want to keep going and kill things.  Still grab the chests though, for some reason that doesn't feel as tedious for me, especially when the chest poops out a Revenant.

It only works if zero pots are broken. It is extremely hard to do because a lot of abilities are AoE and archers/mages get trigger happy. Try a group with a legionnaire, two assassins, and an arcane warrior without chain Lightning. Make sure no pots are broken, but open all doors. Guaranteed to receive a unique item

Actually, it does work. Unfortunately, there is one caveat. You need to kill the last enemy on the board using Caltrops.
