It states that people participating in the Patch 5 beta will have "access" to the Black Emporium, not that it is a part of Patch 5.

This seems very clear to me

I'm not sure what exactly people are misunderstanding

The faux pas is pretty funny when you consider how uptight EA is about announcing any future content on their official Sims 4 forums in case they promise something they don't deliver. So, no Black Emporium? No ability to correct the make-up/skin tone/hair of my IQ that came about because of the character creator's horrible lighting?

"Introducing the DAI Patch 5 Beta Program, Featuring the Black Emporium."

Featuring/to feature:

have as a prominent attribute or aspect.
"the hotel features a large lounge, a sauna, and a coin-operated solarium"
synonyms: present, promote, make a feature of, give prominence to, focus attention on, call attention to, spotlight, highlight, accent
"Radio Ulster intends to feature a week of live concerts"
  • have as an important actor or participant.
"the film featured Glenn Miller and his Orchestra"
  • be a significant characteristic of or take an important part in.
"his later paintings feature prominently in the exhibition"
synonyms: star, appear, participate, play a part, have a place, have prominence
"she is to feature in a major advertising campaign"

If they HAD said 'with' there would have been no reason for the confusion, I agree. They did not.

The key words in your quote are "beta program"

the beta program "features" the black emporium

the beta program is not the patch

so no Black Emporium "featured" in the patch

I haven't seen any evidence (aside from pissed off ramblings and hearsay) that BioWare ever said patch 5 would include the Black Emporium

It's really pretty simple

people are either being deliberately obtuse or they have problems with the language

I don't get this. Why was the BE meant to be in the game? I get the Mirror of Transformation is important to people but saying it should be in the game makes you sound slightly entitled. And the BE itself is hardly essential.

Probably because CC does a poor job at lighting and because it is a known fact that people do want to fix appearances in game, as such many games give you this option from the get go.

I was reading the pc community concerns thread and those who have started the 5th patch are saying there is no black emporium.

It's the key word why? Because you said so? To me the key word is 'patch' as that is what the blog is primarily about, the addition being that patches will now be part of an open beta program.

Then again English is  my second language. Point is that whatever the semantics might be Bioware communicated their message in a way that confused a segment of their fanbase. A segment big enough evidently to warrant some media attention (there are also a number of websites that thought the Emporium would be released along with the patch).  Despite being asked in the official thread about the confusing title of the blog entry they declined to comment. At the end of the day they miscommunicated. They dun goofed.

Craftily worded PR speak. Trick the players into thinking that it will come free with a patch, then charge something ridiculous like $9.99 for it seperately.

I wouldn't even be annoyed at Bioware/EA at this point. Not after forumites were straight up offering similar amounts of money for things that should be in the vanilla game or be in a free update like different hair styles.

Probably this line:

"As part of the beta, participants will have access to the Black Emporium."

The meaning of "beta" there is a bit ambiguous. Presumably they meant the beta program; it's a fairly common usage, as in "I'm in the beta." But it's not crazy to read this as literally referring to the beta itself, though that would be a clunky sentence.

What probably pushed people to the wrong interpretation is that this is a really dopey way to announce a DLC.

Why did they mis word the official announcement, they better have this for free instead of paid dlc. It's frankly misleading to state something is going to be in a patch but not go through with said putting it in said patch..

Well....right now we don't know if it will be charged or not, do we? Was it in DA2, btw?

I'm always pretty much set on not buying anything additional, unless there is a good chunk of story in it and even that will depend on things.

I beleive it was free but I had gotten a coupon for the dlc in question.

Wait... in what universe is this "craftily worded"? Surely that would mean that this helps Bio, but I don't see the mechanism. They gain anticipation for something before it's available, but at the cost of producing disappointment when they actually start selling it. How does this help Bio?

Free to new players. If you bought DA2 used, you didn't get it.

It was free with the special edition, i'm fairly sure you had to pay for it if you bought the standard version of the game though, but don't quote me on that.

It´s the same thing with those entitled pc gamers who think "from pc gamers for pc gamers" does solely translate into "made for pc". Pretty annoying bunch.

Get your readers checked, fellows.

Or probably because I don't want to restart the game 20 times before my face looks the way I imagined.... What will the Emporium contain besides the mirror ? Some new armors ?

Never was a part of patch 5 and, the blog never said it was, only that it was being beta tested with patch 5, which it was.

The title of the original article more or less says exactly that:

http://blog.bioware....black-emporium/

The whole thing was ambiguously and oddly worded. You really can't blame anyone for thinking the BE is part of Patch 5.
