I just left Celene on the throne because she's been ruling for how many years now, and she's been doing a great job, it seems. They don't really give you much info about the other candidates. Even in Origins I left Anora on the throne, but I had her marry Alistair. If Celene and Gaspard weren't related I would've told them to get married too. However when the Keep opens up for Dai, I'll put it so that I got the three way truce. That way I get Celene and Gaspard alive. Idk, I just like Gaspard for some reason.

I'm guessing you didn't read The Masked Empire, because that's where most of the backstory for Celene, Briala and Gaspard is found, and frankly, it doesn't paint any of them in a flattering light. They are all pretty awful people.

Celene. Had no idea who´s who but decided to keep the status quo. Would have killed them all and plunged Orlais into chaos given the change.

Truce for now. Otherwise side with Briala and then get the popcorn as I watch Orlais crumbling to the ground.

My favorite choice is Briala, even when I'm not rolling an elf. I just really love the fact that option even exists and I hope there is way for it to work out for the elves. I always want to fight for the underdogs.

Like most in DA:I, all three have their issues. I can't choose so I favor the 3-way truce to temporarily calm things down. I don't want to get involved here, I just need them to calm down for the time being. I'll let them sort it out amongst themselves later.

I went for Gaspard on Briala's leash. Seems the best way to help the most disadvantaged people in Orlesian society and it provides the Inquisition with a strong ally who has access to the eluvian network and thus rapid access to most of the continent. If you play as an elven Inquisitor with high court approval, the nobility of Orlais stay loyal out of fear and respect for the Inquisition. The Orlesian nobility are strong, but they are no match for the Inquisition using the eluvian network and Briala's espionage empire.

I can definitely see merit in Celene/Briala as well as many of Celene's ideals are highly desirable, however she has repeatedly shown how easily she'll cast aside those ideals if it means guaranteeing her hold on power.

I have Celene on the throne and her and Briala reconcile. Those two together creates the best result in my opinion.

Celene alone eventually forgets her vows to the inquisition it seems. If Briala is with her she holds true.

Actually Celene does NOT forget if you don't have Gaspard executed.  I had him exiled once and got an epilogue were she didnt forget

Yes because if you keep Gaspard alive, he is a threat to her, makes her vulnerable,  killing him makes her stronger.

Celene and Briala for me. That warmonger Gaspard is dead, elves get more rights, and Orlais is resurgent. Everyone wins!

I've done 3 complete playthroughs so far, and I went with a different outcome each time.

1st playthrough - Briala pulling Gaspard's strings as puppetmaster

2nd playthrough - Celene and Briala reconcile

3rd playthrough - Celene as empress, no reconciliation, and Gaspard executed

I'm doing a 4th playthrough right now, which is to be my canon one, and I will make Briala the ruler through Gaspard again, because my canon quizzy is an elf, and she can do the most for the elves in Orlais.

Masked Empire made me hate Celene for what she did to Briala (reconciling the two just leaves a bad taste in my mouth; it's not something I'll do very often because if I were Briala I'd never forgive Celene for slaughtering my people just to stay in power), and it also made me more sympathetic to Gaspard's cause, even though he is a dick, so that's why my favorite outcome is Briala and Gaspard.

Well Orlaisian people are not known for their sunshine, rainbow and bunny nature. I'll assume the higher your status the more dangerous The Game becomes.

Anyways....

Celene and Briala reunited and Gaspard executed.

I took Josie's advice since after all she is the Inquisitor's political adviser.

In my first playthrough, Gaspard with Briala pulling the strings. I wish I would've saved that for my current playthrough because now I'm playing as an elf.

This is pretty true. But in the end I chose Celene/Briala for my canon Elf playthrough. Celene has already shown that she does want to help the elves but she doesn't want to force the change and with Briala hopefully they'll do great things. Besides Gaspard's dislike for elves irritated me. I figured he'd eventually try and escape Briala's leash and the elves would be worse off.

I found it impossible to trust any of them. In the end I felt forcing all three to work together was for the best not for Orlais, but for the inquisition. I feel that this way, they'll all keep the other from garnering too much power while I can have my Agents gather more of their dirty little secrets. Eventually war will break out in Orlais, but by then I'll have already made the most use of them. When the time comes, the inquisition will install whichever puppet they please.

I didn't read any of the books so I'm a bit blind in all of this. How much of an a$$ is Gaspard? To choose him at ruler, I have to let Celene die? Her blood will be on my hands basically (by letting an assassination happen)?

This for sure. I loved it! Is that all canon? It seems so. I don't like that it's sort of glossed over in DA:I. Briala possesses something really important. If she gets executed what happens to that? Seeing Michel de Chevin and Mihris, I understand now why some of these characters are floating around the game but they should've used them way more than what we were given.

Anyway, I always force a truce saying they are 3 of the best minds in Orlais and to stop fighting. I don't feel like my inquisitor should choose who to back especially after finding evidence on all 3. (I also did not find all those damn halla statues, caprice coins and blackmail items for nothing). After doing all of that and basically saving them from killing each other that night that's the best my inquisitor could do. My inquisitor granted them a courtesy that night. If they want to kill themselves still after all that, they can go ahead.

I could understand an inquisitor who did not poke around enough to find hard evidence on each of them to rely on choosing based on what their gut tells them or what they deduce from the information that they do have.

Celine+Briala, but I do this not knowing The Masked Empire.

I don't like the TME wasn't really referenced, but I also like that we're only seeing stuff from the Inquisitor's POV, and he's not going to see everything. Bioware can still make both the book and game count at the same time in later content.

Canon in my mind has Briala pulling the strings over Gaspard.  Current game has all three in a truce.  WEWH is my least favorite mission. Unlike Gaspard who says he detests the game but seems to not mind playing it, I actually detest the game and find that quest so mentally trying!  I really like exploring the palace though and wish we could just explore without the finite amount of halla statues.  Just let me set someone on fire or something.

The Halls statues is annoying!

I'd like to RP a playthrough where I seriously do not give ANY s***s about anything Game. ALL DIE.

(Possible book spoilers, will try not to reveal details.)

After reading The Masked Empire, I ended up deciding to reconcile Celene and Briala. To others who read the book, I know that it hardly seems at all healthy to reunite them considering what Celene did, but I don't doubt that Celene genuinely cares for Briala, and considering her circumstances and the nature of The Game, her actions were necessary for her to become Empress. I know that doesn't justify it, and I agree that it was terrible. But one shouldn't make moral judgments of another person's actions in absence of context, which in this case means Orlais, a country whose people and society hold cunning, deceit, intelligence, ruthlessness and ambition as the highest virtues of nobility and leadership. Celene was raised in a world where every one of her peers embraced the dictum "The strong do what they can, and the weak suffer what they must." And while I deplore her actions, I concede that they were necessary, and thus tolerable. Although Briala suffered enormously because of Celene's actions, the fact remains that they do genuinely love each other, and each truly wished to see the other's dreams and goals come true.

As for Gaspard, I find myself conflicted about how I feel about him, but ultimately consider him an inferior alternative to Celene. Sure he has a chevalier's honor, and he despises The Game as much as I and every other human being does. But he's also a militant nationalist who has no other plan than to expand Orlais' borders. Sure it's possible to arrange peace between Orlais and Ferelden, and thus direct his focus towards Tevinter, but even a war with Tevinter could have undesirable consequences if he can't keep the people of his empire to work with him. He would have been a poor Orlesian's Louis XIV; he would expand Orlais' borders certainly, but he has no diplomatic skill, and his hatred for and likely refusal to play The Game would undoubtedly enrage the nobles under him and subsequently compromise his ability to actually govern. His army would be the only thing keeping him on the throne, which is pointless if he has no bureaucracy and administration to work with him, which means nobles who tend to get unruly when someone ruins their Game. Add his prejudice towards elves, and you have a man who would shake up Orlesian society to the point of creating more instability and civil infighting in the long run.

Letting Briala rule through him is equally as bad, as her attempts to uplift the elves would likely result in a very rapid overturning of the status quo, and that means backlash. Her reforms would bring a lot of change to quickly and would become incredibly hard to enforce, especially when the puppet emperor can do nothing to temper the changes enough to assuage the conservatives of his empire.

As for forcing all three into a truce, I'm afraid that option does nothing in the long run that benefits Orlais. Celene's rule would be as tenuous and vulnerable as before, Gaspard would still be able to challenge Celene and her plans for Orlais, and Briala would end up with nothing and continue her shadow war to emancipate the elves. They may be three of the greatest minds in the empire, but their goals and beliefs are too disparate to ever allow them to cooperate for the greater good of Orlais.

Thus, Celene and Briala are left. This option is truly the best option for both Orlais and Thedas. Briala would still be able to get reforms passed to improve the lives of the elves, but she'd also have Celene with her to execute the changes with enough tact and precision to void unrest and discord. Celene would also be able to continue to direct Orlais down a path of cultural enlightenment, while also earning more support from the elves through Briala. Together, they'd create an Orlesian nation whose strength lies in progressivism, and create a society where both human and elven citizens can flourish. That Orlais would embrace peace and diplomacy over military expansion under their rule also guarantees stability in southern Thedas, which would go a long way in dealing with future threats from Tevinter, and would make it easier to form a united coalition should the Blight or even the Qunari threaten the south once more.

Yeah, a little more direct use of the book material would have been fantastic. While I found it funny to hear Solas admonish Mihris for not telling the truth of her story to a non-elven inquisitor, and I loved the references to the story that were there, I do think there was a lot more that could have been done or explicitly mentioned. I also wish that Felassan was mentioned at least once, especially if like me you've come to the conclusion that Felassan was Solas' servant. Side note, how many people here that read The Masked Empire think that Solas is inhabiting Felassan's body? The descriptions of Felassan are similar to Solas'; violet eyes, looks to be in his 40s, yet seems to be so much older, etc. And we know Solas can remove Valaslin, so that's not a problem. And I would love to have seen a moment where Briala looks at Solas and remembers Felassan if this were true. But I guess that'll just be hypothesis for now.
