I tried to post pics, but none of them work for some reason. Something about that image extension not being allowed.
There we go. The first few are the Oculus rift, and the last one is HTC and Valves.

Yeah how awesome would that be. Only downside, and this doesnt apply to you since you use a controller anyway, is I wouldnt be able to use my mouse and keyboard.Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh NOW I know what you're talking about LOL and I WANT ONE NOW!!!!!!

It's a gimmick as far as it stands right now. They either work with a single display, in which case I'd rather look at a monitor, or they have laughably small resolutions if they employ seperate projectors for each eye. Nevermind that the static field of view for such VR sets is still way to small (110 degrees for the latest Oculus Rift version for example). The human eye has a forward facing FOV of roughly 180 degrees, make that up to 270 degrees if we add the trivial task of rotating eyes, the latter which modern VR sets still can't track (well, they could, eye tracking technology is available, but it's also costly as ***), making the entire experience distinctively artificial to the human eye (which btw is the point that VR sets want to avoid, so they are still failing in that regard!), which can turn out to cause motion sickness in a lot of people.
What VR needs to really get off the starting point is the ability to properly track eye movement, plus good enough projection/display technology that allows for reasonable resolutions to cover the entire human eye FOV.
I'm pretty optimistic about VR. It only needs to be good enough to not annoy too many people and to support good software that people want.
If that can be achieved, then we have many years to perfect the tech and create new iterations of it.
Its not going to be so core to the rest of the 2010s IMO, but I'm very open to it being a huge deal and chunk of various industries in the 2020s.
The hardware is looking more aesthetically pleasing lately, but it has a while to go. When it can basically look like a visor while still being immersive, it'll be great.
I consider it a mix of gimmick and legit, as opposed to the utter gimmick of the Virtual Boy. If somehow it fails, it may be picked up again in the 2020s-2030s and be long overdue for popularization at that point regardless.

Beyond the screen, though, I think SteamVR is ahead of Crescent Bay in every way that matters. The tracking worked flawlessly in my demo. I could move my head to look around and walk around my small room to explore the virtual environments of Valve’s demos. Oculus has repeatedly said that the Rift is a “seated experience,” even though they demo Crescent Bay standing up. Valve, meanwhile, is embracing the potential of standing up and walking around.
In for future real life Sword Art Online.

Still not impressed. I want holodeck level immersion and programs I can customize.

As interesting as that sounds, I think we are more then a few years away from it. wouldn't it be cool to play a shooter or rpg fully kitted out for VR? I think it has some cool potential. I am trying to imagine playing kingdom come deliverance with VR and it seems pretty awesome.Still not impressed. I want holodeck level immersion and programs I can customize.
Not too impressed with that VR porn either.
Yeah the entire thing has potential, I'm just increasingly impatient these days.

If a company was to find a way to combine a control setup like the first Steel Battalion with mech game on par with Mechwarrior 3 and a vr headset, I would probably never leave the house.
