Well in Dalish tales it does say that Fen'Harel was neither god nor forgotten one. But the thing is, the Dalish have an extremely skewed view on their history...but it still does kind of make sense that in order to accomplish what he did he would have to be neither those things. To have the view of freeing people and overthrowing the pantheon(s) he would have to identify with the common people. Which I don't think any god (or even forgotten one) would do. To lower yourself to what the elven gods considered scraps and expendable materials...he would have had to either dissown his godhood, or not be part of it to begin with.

Which also makes sense that in order to overthrow them, he would need powerful allies...as made clear with his banter with Sera "why not take it all the way?" which means that he intended to replace the gods with a newer "better" government perhaps?

So then is his plan to release the gods? Now it doesn't seem so likely...

GAH my thoughts are everywhere!!!

Regarding Solas'(and thus the Pantheon's nature): I'm usually of the camp that they were very powerful elves. Possibly something we haven't seen, but when you break it down, nothing different. They were deified because of their specialisness however - see Geldauran's codes (raised up not by nature but by deed).  I do think Solas and the gods for that matter were capable of caring for the common man.  We see that with Solas in game. He very much cares about peoples' plights.  I think that's where the disillusionment comes in. He spent thousands of years being part of this super-group.  Sharing magical secrets and knowledge and is having a ball, but all the time the lesser people are in a terrible state. It wasn't right. Maybe he tried to appeal to them and they didn't listen and at the same time they clearly fought among eachother.  Maybe Mythal was the only one that listend. the only one that cared but then she was murdered.  and Why? We don't know.  Maybe her murder was his breaking point.

So then he joins up wit other people who feel the same and you have the forgotten ones.  people that were villified and turned into horrows by time and rumor.   time has a tendency of turning events into confusing and poetic stories.  look at the the inquisitor. the blessed herald of andraste, valiantly saved from the fade by a glowing woman.   all i saw was my chick collapse out of a portal and she has a stupid fade rift on her hand.  she's not really any stronger, she's pretty much still just her.  that was just a year. imagine what you'll be in 3,000 years.  probably a non-elf with a super hand that can fade rift mountains into nothing.

OK so are you saying the forgotten ones are suppressed revolutionaries? And their names were verboten due to political repression...

And that the abyss is some kind of Guantanamo bay...

I could ride with that. It is also a very good FF scenario.

And I wonder if all of them even still live. Some of them may be locked int he Abyss - but then did Solas even put them there????  I kind of view them like the Baader-Meinhof gang or something.

OK, here's a song for Arlathan and the fall of the Pantheon.

https://www.youtube....h?v=wQXit0vly2I

Take a bow

Corrupt, you corrupt
And bring corruption to all that you touch
Hold, you'll behold
And beholden for all that you've done

And spell, cast a spell
And cast a spell on the country you run
And risk, you will risk
You will risk all their lives and their souls

And burn, you will burn
You will burn in Hell, yeah, you'll burn in Hell
You'll burn in Hell, yeah, you'll burn in Hell
For your sins

Ooh, our freedom is consuming itself
What we've become
Is contrary to what we want
Take a bow

Death, you bring death
And destruction to all that you touch
Pay, you must pay
You must pay for your crimes against the earth

And Hex, feed the Hex
Feed the Hex on the country you love
And beg, you will beg
You will beg for their lives and their souls

Yeah, burn, you will burn
You will burn in Hell, yeah, you'll burn in Hell
Burn in Hell, yeah, you'll burn in Hell
Burn in Hell, yeah, you'll burn in Hell
For your sins

Indeed he may have not, perhaps he simply promised them freedom and failed to deliver... For whatever reason.

I shared this at the Solas thread and I thought I'd share this here. ;)

A nice family reunion, starring Falon' Din, Lavellan Dalish OC, and Solas. xD By swevenfox.

The reunion scene needs to be permeated with a heady blend of power, glitter, danger, and sex.

And hands around the Dread Wolf's throat--not  hard, but gentle as Falon'Din whispers whispers what he will do to Solas now that he's out. Thinly veiled threats. Solas in danger, girl.

And the soundtrack from the movie Drive is playing.

Also, Falon'Din is fabulous and dangerous.

And Dorian is turned on.

So I have to ask.  What brought about the idea that the elven 'gods' are/were FABULOUS?

Well I think some of us are hungry for really powerful deities--they were aristocratic, so fabulous potential. (I'm going to regurgitate some of my previous musings below).

Why should they not be horror-monsters:

What is truly terrifying is the prospect of a mortal confronting the Divine and seeing the horror of his own reflection. The elvhen pantheon has the potential to enact such a gaze. That would be a powerful story. The villains would be fully-toothed but understandble--terrifying in their excess but with motivations that are not alien, with desires that are all too familiar,

Moreover, yes the "glitter pantheon" is hyperbolic, but even so, it speaks to a primal sense of power, eros, excess, and tragic decay. There are so many tantalizing pieces of pantheon's story: the relationship between Dirthamen and Falon'Din as something so poetic and deep and tragic and dark. That they are forever interlaced. It's thorny and compelling. Andruil's story. The tale of Ghil'nain's apotheosis, which marries scientific discovery to horror to sublime and sacred knowledge.

The Inquisition, in game, is very concerned with questions of power and how powerful institutions change the arc of history. Cassandra asks if you are doomed to repeat the past. Solas struggles with the proposition that change can actually happen. Can the march of history actually be progressive, or will it just circle back on itself like a snake eating it's own tail?

Making them alien horrors would be so, so disappointing. See also gross, boring robes. DO NOT WANT.

Also, I am on the Falon'Din/Dirthamen/whoever ship and I am not getting off.

Also, I like to think of them as less "fabulous" like we would us the term and more seductive, sinister, and bacchic:

Imagine a Dionysiac Arlathan steeped in eros, understanding abandon, but not Dionysiac in the sense that is of representative of nature in opposition to Apollonian ideas of culture and civilization. But a Dionysian City that understands that at the heart of the city-state lies both transcendental serenity and order as well terrifying violence and frenzy.

Such is my idea of Glitterotica Arlathan.

It's worth noting the Bacchus/Dionysis was a male god with a special relationship to women. He is terrifying and androgynous. And is representative of both masculine and feminine. He represents both horrible violence and tragedy as well as transcendental frenzy and the sublime; both the sacred and the profane.
