Solas /is/ pretty Byronic. And, I mean, if you're going to have some Gods floating about, Byronic isn't an awful way to go.

That one picture of the Inquisition at the table looks like the Last Supper painting to me. Puts Solas in an awkward spot.
Spoiler
Ah, I was going to mention that... If you compare it to Leonardo's original Solas is actually in....
St Peter's place and as a matter of fact their profiles almost actually coincide....

I don't know . . . when I think of Byronic I think of the man himself. Byron drank wine from a skull, had a pet bear, a lot (and I mean A LOT of lovers), reveled in fame and decadence, stood out, loved when the gaze was fixed on him, was "mad, bad, and dangerous to know").
He was a rebel. So, there is that.
But I just don't see Solas as Byronic.

Give me a moment, I'll link you to the discussion. It set the Solas thread on fire when someone thought I was arguing that Solas WAS Satan. That was funny.
Eeh, something else that had completely passed me by. And it's really funny because Solas is basically the Mephisto prototype, how could anyone deny the parallels?

THAT IT DOES.
Alright, so if you want the direct link to the original posts, here they are: Post 1, Post 2, and Post 3. You could also read from Post 1 on, there was some super great discussion and I made sure to include @Jellobell's post about the Prometheus parallel that could also be drawn between him and Solas if Milton's Satan wasn't fully appropriate.
[snip]
I'm out of likes. I like this.

Let the Right One In~~~~ that movie made me so uncomfortable it's so well done.
Watch the original one Let Me in. It's Russian I think but it's way better.

Pixelated husband defenders could. I'm going to hell with Solas for that.

He's more Apollonian...
We should remember that Apollo skinned one of his followers alive as punishment for daring to challenge him to a musical contest. Apollo could have chose any punishment, and he chose one of the most brutal for corporal justice. (The winner of the contest got to chose the other's punishment). See also Ovid's Marsyas or Titian's painting of that scene.

It's Swedish! I recommend reading the book, if you can squeeze it in before the movie. It's by John Ajvide Lindqvist. One of my favorite books ever. Deeply disturbing in ways I think both the movies, while pretty good adaptations, don't quite capture.

As far as I know, the original one is Swedish (original name being : Låt den rätte komma in), not Russian.
And the only other version is American, and called Let Me In.

You know how I feel about this? THIS IS HOW I FEEL ABOUT THIS.
Spoiler
I just want to bathe in this whole post.
But returning to a thought you had about the Apollo parallel - I'm just not quite sure there. I might have sooner pushed Sylaise into that role due to their connection with the healing arts and more "tame" interests. Likewise, her role as being depicted as Andruil (Diana/ Artemis)'s sibling makes more sense. Here's the Sylaise: The Hearthkeeper codex entry:
I don't think I'm ready to push anyone into the Apollo-role. Yes, his cult represented order, and when one thinks of Apollo they tend to think of divine order, arts, etc. I think what I was trying to say, probably all muddled like, was that we should not forget how dangerous Apollo could be, hence the Marsyas story. Such brutality was not a small part of his character.
That's why I don't like thinking about Apollo/Dionysis as two sides of a coin. The demarcations between Apollonian order and Bacchic frenzy are so porous, and that is what makes their pairing so seductive. Let me say that I think it is useful to think about Apollo/Dionysis as opposites, but I don't want to lose how really entangled they those two are.
I like the Sylaise parallel, she is, after all, connected with fire.

I thought of Sylaise more like Vesta or Hestia. Hearth, fire, all that jazz. Now I wonder if there were slaves or priests in a similar role to the Vestal Virgins. Cultivating the sacred fire of Sylaise might be her temple's equivalent to the Well of Sorrows.

I am sincerely jealous of your students. Would that you were a teacher at my graduate institution!
Oh, STAHP.
I love you.
You take your seat, and all of the sudden the sweet strains of "Playboy" fill the air. Two assistants wheel in the smoke machine, one throws glitter bombs into the air. I enter the classroom.
"Students, today we dismantle the courtly love paradigm!! This is Sparta!!!!"

Maybe after I get tenure. In like 8 years. And the Gods are good.

This. I was never a fan of the "split" myself - because as you say - they are too entangled which is how i've always viewed dionysis...the embodiment of both. the downfall of both groups in that play was their ridiculous adherence to their "gender roles"(which is an incredibly basic view). I miss school. getting my feelings and thoughts out about this. fail.

My feelings and thoughts tend to rush out in a gush. Like a geyser.
NOT A FAIL.
Shower me with your thoughts and feels like a Bacchic fountain of awesome.
