I'm really concerned. First- he wrote some of my favorite companions. Second- He's been the only writer that was quite active out here. That means, he knew about the suggestions about story and companions (future companions!!!) that users left here. I hope some of the other writers ale lurking here as well...

Mary Kirby lurks here, she's posted a few times.  Plus it's not like they won't hear about it from other devs when they see something.  Allan has said multiple times that he passes ideas he thinks are valid onto the correct party

Now I've had time to absorb this shocking news on my drive home...it seems like a bittersweet thing. David Gaider has been my favorite writer and is responsible for most of my favorite characters. 10 years is a long time to work on one project, and it appears Mr. Gaider is ready to try new things. He is one of the architects of the Dragon Age world, his legacy will endure forever.

After meeting Cole, Iron Bull and Solas in DAI, as well as experiencing Here Lies the Abyss, I'm completely confident that the series is in great hands with Patrick Weekes as lead writer. The guy's brilliant, gifted even. And not only is he responsible for making me sob - SOB - at a video game, after I finish my second playthrough, I will likely say he has been responsible for me sobbing at a video game - twice! In the same game!

Maker...this guy is gonna milk those fan tears, mark my words.

Well, anyway, I think congratulations are in order for Mr. Gaider and Mr. Weekes. :)

Wow, I mean, that's like Tolkien walking away from Lord of the Rings. Not auspicious.

I'm not too worried. It takes more than one person to craft a videogame franchise.

Which is why I wanted to leave my response short rather than get in an argument but while still putting something to express my opinion on this piece of news.

From what have seen of your posts kallen/hanako, you often leave an inflammatory comment, waiting for people to comment on it.

That comes off as very attention seeking. At least it really gives this impression. (don't take it badly)

I'm rather intrigued about the new IP now. At least it'll be Weekes stepping into his shoes. His work has been pretty enjoyable so far.

Who/what did Weekes write in Mass Effect? I'm not as familiar with the writing process there. Cole is ok, but Solas and Bull were my least favorite characters this time around, so I'm wondering if I should be worried in addition to being sad about Gaider's departure.

He did the Tuchanka arc in ME3.

Tali and Samantha are the ones I remember. And I think Garrus in ME2?

@Aren

How are Alistair and Dorian a stereotype? :P

I wonder what that new IP is.

Those two of my  list are the unidimensional characters for me.

Alistair unhardened is the shiny and sarcastic (boring for me rather than sarcastic) knight with the daddy complex.
If hardened he is less of a stereotype but still the same unidimensional character far very far from Cassandra and Solas to be seen as a complex character.

In Dorian i only see a wasted potential in his personal quest particularly the absence of a dialogue option that would convince him to help his father to mantain his family bloodline, in that quest is the Inquisitor responses who are unidimensional for the rest he his the 3rd of my favorite for DAI.

He did the Tuchanka arc in ME3.

That was John Dombrow with Weekes' help on Mordin.

He did do the Rannoch arc though.

Did you like Krem, or the resources girl in Haven?  Or Here Lies the Abyss

Of course I forgot the obvious one. And I agree, Mordin's story was amazing.

It's sad that he's leaving Dragon Age.  But he's not leaving Bioware.  We'll just have to see what this new project is.

And Weekes is no slouch as a writer himself.

I wouldn't say often, but I won't deny I occasionally do a post like that. Not in the sense of having attention brought to me but more to have attention brought to the certain discussion, like pointing out that there are people who have zero representation in the games when there is bickering about people wanting more or less of it. That's why when there are those occasional comments I wait for replies. In this instance though, I was just putting my opinion.

I think it'd be a massive shock if he left BioWare, he's been there since Baldur's Gate

Gaider wrote all of my favorite characters, it's a damn shame to see him go, but after ten years it's understandable. I wish him luck.

I wonder if anyone will write characters as awesome as Morrigan, Alistair, Zevran etc. in the future of the franchise. I have my doubts.

I was sad until I saw that he was still working at BioWare. Phew. I like his work, it would be a shame to lose him. I really like Patrick Weekes' stuff too though, so I'm inclined to agree with DG that DA is in good hands writing-wise. At least, his character writing is very good. Guess we'll have to find out how he does when handed a full story.

I am surprised to hear this, but I am not sad. I am not sad because this news means that I will have 2 BioWare series to look forward to instead of one. I enjoy Patrick Weekes' writing and I'm sure I will continue to enjoy Dragon Age in the future... plus, there's whatever David is moving to. As long as it isn't sci-fi, I'm sure I'll love it.

Congratulations to Patrick for the promotion, and best wishes to David in his new endeavor!
