It kind of depends on whatever the PC's combat style is, but if we're just talking the companions themselves, rather than the party:

 

Sword and Shield: Alistair.

2-Handed: Oghren and Fenris.

Dual-Wield: Zevran.

Archer: Leliana and Sera.

Mage: Morrigan, Velanna and Merrill.

 

Plus: Cassandra, Isabela and Anders.

 

It's really hard to pick just 3 or 4, because they're all so awesome!

Sword and Board:  Alistair and Cassandra (right now I'm picturing the companion cross-talk; someone please make this happen)

 

Archers: Leliana and Sera

 

Dual-Wield: Isabella and Zevran (we might not get a lot of work done, but we'd have a lot of fun.  Now that I think about it, there are not a lot of default dual-wield rogues in the series.)
