The big issue with that, that I see, is that David Gaider basically wrote all the deep lore, the setting bible that only some of the DA writers ever get to see. Which makes me look askance at the likelihood that future games will feel anything like the first ones.

I doubt this will have much effect on the "grand vision for the series" or any such, just because, well, I don't think any such thing exists.  DA2 was already way different in terms of story from DAO, and DAI was very different from DA2.  That the next game would be significantly different, and do its own thing with any loose plot threads (mostly ignore them, likely) already seemed like a given to me.

That said, I'm not familiar enough with who was been specifically responsible for what parts of the writing up until now, so it's hard to say "this is gonna rock" or "this is gonna suck" just yet...

But he didn't leave BioWare.

Oh i thought Gaider jumped ship, just like Brent Knowles, Jenny Hepler, Casey Hudson, ect.

Nah that would suck. I'm curious about the project he's working on though. Personally I think this can be a good thing.

I was so sure such a thread would pop up. I am not disappointed.
Thanks Bioware Forums for never failing to lower my faith in humanity.

So this is a surprise to me, but I'm not really worried.  There are several good writers involved in Dragon Age.  I'm really interested in finding out what he's going to be working on next.

Wait, my man Weekes is in charge now?

Aww baby, I'm actually looking forward to the future now.

You thought you hit the brakes, but you really hit the gas, mofo.

I overlooked the word 'new' the first time I read that tweet. I suppose that rules out Mass Effect? It's a new game, but not a new series.

This third IP in the works we've heard so little about?

Except that Patrick Weekes is now the lead writer..and he's excellent. The series is in good hands (writing wise).

I'm sure DA will be fine with Patrick Weekes. I wonder what new project David Gaider will be working on.

Anyway... it's official, dwarf companion romance in the next game ? :P

I'm excited about the news. David will add his talents to a new endeavor, which I'm sure I'm going to love (assuming it isn't sci-fi, which I just can't get into no matter how hard I try), and Patrick will be leading the Dragon Age writing team, so we can look forward to continued quality there. There isn't a down-side to this.

Bring forth the auto-dialogue!

(assuming it isn't sci-fi, which I just can't get into no matter how hard I try),

I think the new IP was supposed to be sci-fi, assuming it's the same thing that Preston went to work on (and Casey, before he left).

There is no more Flemeth. No Shale. I don't disagree that Patrick is a good writer, but these characters and more are lost to me now, and I can't help but feel terrible about it. (And Cassandra and Dorian are going to get stand-in writers for any DLC now.)

I don't think "all future DA games will suck", but I do worry it's not going to be the same.

My heart skipped a beat but It is nice to hear that someone who has had a hand in writing Dragon Age for years is the new lead writer. Best of luck to Mr Gaider in the new project.

Just be glad they did not hire Stephine Meyer. Everyone would sparkle and the the text would be incoherent.

It is most likely the new IP that Bioware is developing for the future. It was mentioned little while back.

No sense talking about it until you have something solid to show. I mean some people got real uppity about elements of the leaked pre-alpha footage of DA:I not showing up in the final game so Bioware is likely going to play things closer to the chest from now on.

Well i hope Weekes will bring back Oghren cause i really miss that Dwarf.

Most likely not.

This is kinda sad. Hasn't Gaider been lead writer of all the Dragon Age games? Still, Patrick taking over as lead writer is good news.

Sometimes change is good. This is a good change, me thinks.

I suppose this means Weekes won't be writing for the new Mass Effect.

Mixed feelings about that.

Honestly, I don't see this as a very good thing for whatever project this is. The writing in Inquisition was generally, at best, mediocre. If that's the kind of quality to expect from the new IP, it's not going to be worth much.

Awwwwwwwww.  :(

This is sad, but in a bittersweet way. I love Gaider's work since he's been with DA so long, but I'm sure the series will continue to thrive, and I can definitely understand wanting to move to something else, at the very least for a while. So I'm happy for David that he gets to do a new series which I'm sure is exciting.

Calm down, OP. As others have stated, I'm pretty positive that these games are 98% a group effort, and I doubt ONE person coming or going will create a monumental shift in a franchise.

Gaider is not so good when it comes at big-picture world-building.
Each game seems completely separate from the others with only a perception of continuity, Dragon Age doesn't really need that anymore.
