Obviously I have not read the book so I am oblivious to any other faults it may have but if your major problem with the book is that it set up something that did not quite turn out as exciting in the game isn't that more a problem with the game rather than the book?

Along with being a good book, The Masked Empire will give you good insights into the major players at the Winter Palace.  Namely, Briala, Celine, and Gaspard.

I see this as a good thing personally.

Other than the fact that they would have to rebuild the whole thing and they're suppose to look corrupted

And like Hanako said, they actually looked better in DAI

Don't be an idiot, Putty patrol rejects don't look better at all.

Chris Avalone isn't the writer Dragon Age deserves (because Dragon Age deserves the glorious Mac Attack), but he's the writer that it needs RIGHT NAO!

He's really not that good.

If they could get whoever was lead for Planetscape: Torment, though...

(I hope it's not actually him. It could be for all, I know. A lot of these guys worked at Black Isle.)

Chris Avellone was lead designer for Planescape: Torment, while he was working as the level designer for Fallout 2 at the same time.

I have the utmost respect for what Avellone has done for the industry.  But, at the same time, he hasn't really worked on any new intellectual properties in almost a decade now.  He's a man who's mostly just polishing what he's already created, and that's fine.  Not that he would work for a big megalith like Bioware anyways, I think he wants to do the semi-independent thing now.

I had no idea. I was judging him by what I saw in Lonesome Road for New Vegas, which I thought was just a big mess. Where the hell has this guy been for the past 15 years? What he did with Planetscape is exactly what Inquisition lacked and what BioWare needs.

He's still within Bioware so ..who cares.

It's a sad day. Gaider isn't the best writer in the industry (Chris Avellone takes that title until proven otherwise), but he ranks pretty high.

That said, Patrick Weekes has been steadily rising in my esteem. The characters he writes end up being my favorite, especially Cole, and I'm considering picking up The Masked Empire to see how he fares in a novel (I otherwise never, ever buy tie-in novels for games).

That's true. I'm sure he'll still consult on future Dragon Age games and maybe do a little writing.

Still doing stuff at Obsidian. He led all of New Vegas, I think. Before that, Alpha Protocol.

I was just talking about NV in another thread. It's not really one of my favorites, but even then, the basic philosophy is better than what happens here. In New Vegas, I can construct a pretty clear personality just through starting skills alone. As much as a random wanderer the hero is, they still have more personality and expertise than the Inquisitor.

Yeah, he'll just be messing up making parts of the new IP, so Gaider fans need to relax.

I'm pretty sure Sawyer lead New Vegas and I know for a fact John Gonzales did most of the writing.

Sawyer is a weird guy to figure out. He clearly knows what the hell  he's talking about, he's got a great grasp of narrative fundamentals. Yet most of his time is spent on mechanics and whatnot instead of writing. I dunno why. There's no end of programmers who can design good graphics and good combat systems and whatnot. But writers who understand what he understands are rare. I'd think he want to leverage his talents.

Maybe he's just not great with imagining new content. But it sounds like he's done pretty well with Pillars of Eternity so far...

Perhaps you're right. My bad. Avelone was mostly involved in AP then.

You should check him out on wikipedia.  His 12 year run from '98 to '10 is about as good as you're going to find for prominent video game writers/designers:

Fallout 2, Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale, Icewind Dale 2, Baldur's Gate: DA, Champions of Norrath, KOTOR 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout NV.  Some others in there as well.

Hm, I've always found Gaider's writing to be competent but nothing phenomenal.  Weekes has been impressing me more than Gaider lately, so if he becomes the new lead I'll be pleased.

I don't think the word "official" means what you think it means.

Yay, now this will certainly end this pitiful series as I had been waiting for for so long. Mwahahaha. *rubs hands together maliciously*

But seriously, I'm glad he's gone. He was lead writer for da2 and dai and those weren't very good at all. Hopefully with a new person running things da4 will be better. But then again if they already have it planned out, it might have been doomed to fail months or years before we've learned this news.

Thank god, is all I can say.

DA:I had the most inane, nonplussed core canon of any Bioware game in the past two decades. It was so mind-numbingly trite and dull, the fetch and carry quests to save the refuges in the Hinterlands felt like they had more weight and progress to them.

150 hours, 120 of which were spent actively avoiding main quest progression...

Wasn't David fundamental in creating Dragon Age? Him leaving the franchise seems kinda huge. Though I don't think this means there has to be any kind of drop in quality, one writer does not a game make. Even the head writer.

Yes, creator/loremaster of sorts. I think a lot of people had their say so in soon enough though. He doesn't claim sole vision or anything like that.
