The past few days have been very interesting if you are into video game development

Epic Games have just released Unreal Engine 4 for free https://www.unrealen...unreal-engine-4

*You pay 5% of royalties of products sold using the Engine

Unity Technologies just released Unity 5 for free http://unity3d.com/5

*No royalties but they do have a flat rate you can pay if you release a product that exceeds $100,000 sales.

Also have a personal version available.

And Valve have announced that Source 2 will be free http://www.escapistm...-2-Free-For-All

Overall Unity 5 is looking to be the most beneficial as the engine supports more platforms and the flat rate is pretty low compared to possible royalties from products made using Unreal.

Unity is good for low grade to mid tier rendering. It is good for it's rapid development model and the most beneficial for indie applications. Typically , I do mobile apps and games so I usually implement the graphical framework myself, it cuts out most of the costs and much more customizable.

For larger scale application, unreal engine is definitely the one. However, the learning curve is much greater than little unity.

I remember when Playstation 2 used to sell their development kit for $12,000. Amazing how things have changed

Interesting. I really do wonder how game development will be in the 2020s - the restrictions, capabilities, etc.
