I have had several characters but haven't really progressed very far with any of them. Anyway I started a new character a few days ago and sided with the mages but conscripted them today.  When I first talked to Cole he was already kind of mad at me.  He said something like, "I don't like what you're doing.  I might find somewhere else to go."  And when I asked him about his past he wouldn't tell me. He said, "No."

 

This hasn't happened in my past characters.  Not sure what happened.  I did download the latest patch but I doubt that would cause it. Does he take into account your past actions or something? Even then, I don't think I did anything different.

Yeah, he takes into account your past actions. I believe the implication is that he's been following you around for a while. That, or he taps into the minds of those affected by you and figures things out.

 

But he's unique in that he will approve of actions that help people, no matter how long ago you did them. And vice-versa. It's not a bug, just a character trait.

 

If you conscripted the mages instead of allied with them, that's the reason.

oh ok I guess I never noticed that.  I did save all of the quests that help people until he joined me. I guess that's the difference.

Weird i never had that happen but i didn't conscript the mages i let them have free reign.

Hm, I allied with the Templars but he never acted hostile, even though the Wiki says he disapproves of that. Though, I suppose that's because he approves when you recruit him after Champions of the Just, so it all evens out.

 

When you recruited Cole, was there ever any approval? 'Cause I remember the last time I recruited Dorian, he didn't like my Inquisitor either when I spoke with him. It's strange, since I've allied with the Templars before, but never had that until recently.

I've conscripted the mages and he is one of my best friends. My mage elf is liked by everybody. Chose Solas over Sera because she is an Elf hater.
