This is basically a very simple question I hope someone from Bioware can answer.

What was the reason for going into scripted knockback animations (like when we shield bash an enemy and he flies far) instead of using the physics engine?

In general I would have loved more presence of the physics engine.

I'd imagine because there are a lot sloped areas and hills in the game, having enemies go ragdoll while sliding down and being hit, would be pretty OP. If you look at games like GTA V, Red Dead and Skyrim, whenever something goes ragdoll down a slope, the momentum keeps them going and they won't break the ragdoll effect until they stop and the slopes and hills in DAI are quite big. They may also not have any experience with physics in games, since many, if not all of their games are stiff and rigid and most of the environments are pretty basic in geometry.

I think the situation you mention about hills would be just perfect to happen. It would open strategies based on the environment.

Yeah, but the AI is too stupid to be able to do the same thing to you. You could easily lead the enemy near a steep hill, shield bash them off and then have archers/mages beat on them as they roll down the hill.

Its a possibility. Well, I hope for next DA they just go with more physics those details can be fixed up to an acceptable form.
