Which Inquisitor is your canon? Your first, your most fun, or the one that flows best as a story?

...Or are you fortunate enough that your canon is a combination of the above?  I know DA4 is a long ways away, but it's something I've been pondering.

My first playthrough was a circle mage who romanced Cullen. While I felt that the Cullen/mage dynamic was nice, I don't think story-wise my canon should be another human mage protagonist since for me DA:O and DA2 had human mage pc's also.

My second playthrough was the most fun as a female qunari mage who romanced Sera. She was pretty much a ruthless ****** who favored the bottom replies and half the companions didn't like her. Solas and Dorian got punched. I loved playing as a qunari but story-wise this playthrough was more humorous/enjoyable than anything else.

My last playthrough was an elven mage who romanced Solas. This I feel was the best story considering the romantic quality of the Solas romance and the elves' plight being addressed (Flemeth, Solas, Temple of Mythal, etc.), and while I loved my pc's face (credit to animedreamer for the design) I've never been a big fan of elves.

Thus I'm at a crossroads. How do you choose your canon?

The first playthrough (in any game) tends to be the most memorable for me so I guess you could call that canon.

In DAI's case the first (pardon the pun :D ) was a female Dalish mage who romanced Sera, and got (my canon) Hawke killed.

Good question.

In DAO, it was the collection of tales that became the most memorable (ie; Mage, Rogue, Warrior, evil Mage, etc). This was a bit like my Skyrim campaigns in which I settled on a canon for most of the races (eg; Dark Elven Vampire, noble hearted Orc, etc).

In DA2, one canon story to continue the base ones from DAO.

Thus far in DAI, it is not my first; will replay that one eventually. My second is currently going well enough; will see if it makes the mage canon slot.

After I play the game a few times I tend to hone in and go about all the quests in the same fashion/make same choices. For DAI my first Inquisitor happens to be the one I call canon. I was pleased with how everything turned out for him, I'm comfortable with what transpired in game. He's also the one I'm most attached to.

I have a canon for each class and both genders. My canon warrior is a Qunari Reaver.

Yes, but which would you import into DA4? Or would you alternate depending on playthrough?

Well I don't really have a "canon" for myself as I'm an alt-aholic and already juggle over half a dozen world states around for my DA:O Wardens.

That said my first playthrough also ended up being incredible for the flow of the story as I made a female elf mage who romanced Solas. This combination of things made the story overall more impactful in many ways than in subsequent playthroughs.

Let us say that in DA:O yes my first PT was the canon but I started to do a first one with other characters because I want to build the canon the way I wanted. I mostly plan my canon before the game gets release, most of the time this works but in DA:I was actually hard.

I wanted a dwarf warrior but the female animations were too OOC for me, to do it. So for my surprise I actually made my canon the female noble, most of the time I do not do humans as my canon, unless forced aka DA 2.

This time it felt right to do it, why? because my first PT was with a Dalish and I romanced Sera(and break the romance, also driking the wanter from Mythal), I just could not put that in my canon because I had something similar in DA:O, with my dalish elf sacrificing herself and breaking the romance with Alistair because he was King.

I make my canon out what I feel to be the most interesting combination of choices, and whatever assists my headcanon.

Within games, I have the Architect and Avernus (unrestricted) alive, as it plays to my goal of demystifying the darkspawn and taint. Between games, there is stuff like the fact that my Warden traveled through the eluvian with Morrigan, and my Hawke supported Merrill's decision to rebuild one.

As an example of headcanon, my Dalish Inquisitor is actually the orphaned son of my Dalish Warden and Velanna.  :D

My first run is always my canon ... sort of. It's the only one where I don't blatantly metagame to get the story outcomes I want, so I consider it more 'pure' than my other worldstates.

However, I have a tradition (well, I've done it twice now) of going back and replaying my first character after I've been through the game a bunch of times, and that's the run I consider canon. I don't allow myself to change any major decisions, but there are always side quests I missed on my first time through.

(Actually, one of the reasons I replayed DA2 was to remove two instances where I did metagame.  I only did Fenris' recruitment quest because I realised I'd done everything else in Act 1 and hadn't met him yet, not because my Hawke was interested in smuggling lyrium or needed the money. Then in Act 3 Merrill's clan attacked me and I felt bad about it and reloaded to change my dialogue choice. On my 'canon' run I roleplayed more honestly, so Fenris was never recruited and the Dalish committed suicide by Hawke.)

I remember before getting to that point in DA2 hearing you have the option of killing the Dalish clan. I thought, "Well, there's no way I'd choose to do that. That's just evil." ...and they died. All I did was point out that the keeper was possessed and they attacked. I refused to meta-game on any playthrough to avoid that outcome. If the truth gets them killed then so be it.

I have one playthrough that I think has a nice story arc.

Dragon Age Origins is Warden Cousland, betrayed by his fathers supposed friend and became a Warden to become strong enough to get revenge. But throughout the adventure he grows out of his hatred and embraces his duty as a Warden. This is why he spares Loghain despite ruining his friendship with Alistair because of it. Also, falls in love with Morrigan, does the Dark Ritual, and goes through the Eluvian with her.

Dragon Age 2 is Warrior Hawke who only wanted to keep his family and few friends safe. He saw how he was the glue that kept his polarizing companions together and the emotional pillar to some of them, so set to to befriend all of them and help them out with their problems/work through their baggage. When Bethany got taken to the Circle, and he became more pro-Mage as time went on. Came to a head when Meredith called the Annulment, then Hawke immediately came to the Mage's side mainly to protect his sister.

Dragon Age Inquisition is Warrior Trevelyan who believed the Maker existed but lost faith in the Chantry over time. Big thing here was weather Morrigan or Trevelyan would drink from the Well of Sorrows. At first I thought to have Trevelyan drink from it to spare Morrigan from being bound to Flemeth (and tame a Dragon). But after thinking for a while, it didn't make sense for my Trevelyan (who isn't a Mage or an Elf or had any sort of training to use the Well to its fullest like Morrigan says she has) to drink from it, it would have been a good humbling experience for Morrigan if she drank from the Well, it seems to be Flemeth's plan for Morrigan to drink from the Well (which would make for an interesting story), and because the tamed Dragon dies or leaves at the end, lame. So I switched to Morrigan drinking from the Well and I'm not that disappointed by it, it's cool to see her shape-shift into a Dragon.

My head canon playthrough is my male Dalish hunter romancing Solas. The romance is everything I love about a BioWare romance, and I'm just sighing over how beautiful and sweet it is, and bracing myself for the inevitable pain lol This is the inquisitor I will write fanfiction about and dream about and think about when I listen to music.

My "official" canon playthrough will likely be one I construct in the Keep. It will probably be a male Dalish romancing no one who drank from the Well. Alternatively, I may go with my female Cadash romancing Blackwall; it's the only "vanilla" romance I'm interested in.

My first playthrough is least likely to be my canon since I made a fair few mistakes and it was bugged, so I missed a lot of conversations and personal quests through companions being invisible when I went to talk to them.    Solas ditching me so close to the end also left me so shattered and confused that I didn't even feel a sense of elation at defeating Cory and was going through the motions at the party.

My second full playthrough was with my gay elven hunter who romanced Dorian.   I saved my clan, conscripted the Templars so got them off lyrium and  had the satisfaction of getting rid of Fiona as leader of the mages, put Briala on the throne of Orlais and ended with Cassandra as Divine, which is probably the option most likely to stay the course of history.   I didn't drink from the well, which all things considered was probably a good move.   Despite being my second playthrough, it did give me the desired emotional high at the end, I enjoyed the party and Dorian agreed to stay with me, so happy days all round.     I would really like to be able to continue on adventuring with this Inquisitor so from that point of view he will probably be my canon.   The world state is also based on my favourite Warden, a female city elf rogue who romanced Zevran, and a female mage Hawke, who romanced Sebastian.   I saved my Hawke.

However, I am now working on a male elf mage Inquisitor, so will see how that goes.     I keep trying to start with a different race but somehow my liking for elves and the whole emphasis on elven history makes me feel playing an elf has so much more significance.

Nice post, but you didn't actually answer my question. Were these characters your first, most fun, and/or those with the best story? You mentioned you liked their story but...

I haven't really settled.  I generally like to make my first playthrough canon, but in this case it has pretty crappy outcomes for all 3 of my protagonists.

I guess I would answer it as the canon one, with the best story that I liked.

My first full playthrough tends to be canon but tweaked to my preference to import. I kind of play myself the first time and need to create stronger backstories for decisions I would not make.

I lol'd

@OP: I have two 'canons' for this game, both human, one warrior (my first) and the other mage. I have not even started the latter yet but that's the current plan.

It's convenient having the Keep on the side for this kind of thing. You can change anything at the press of a button like a god.

Always a human female mage who romances Cullen and sides with the templars, but on my second playthrough using her again, I changed her look slightly and had her romance Blackwall and side with the mages. Same hair and face though, just less/more makeup and no/some scars/tattoos. She is loving, has many friends and always tries to resolve conflicts without death.

I'm going to try a Rogue Elf next and see what this Solas romance hype is all about!

The one that makes for the most interesting story usually winds up being my canon.  So my canon worldstate is Warden Amell and Warden Alistair, mage!Hawke (who died in the Fade) and Anders, Lavellan and Solas.  Of course, "interesting" frequently means "drowning in ugly tears."  <_<

I usually have a beta continuity going on too, of all the choices that I thought were interesting but didn't end up making during my first playthrough.  The nice thing about Keep is that all the worldstates are there, together, easily tweaked if you want to adjust your canon.
