That would be my first one, lady Adaar.

I'm sure she will always be my favorite despite how much I botched the character.

I believe I got two aspects right and the rest of it was an inconsistent mess.

My first run is usually rushed, because I'm impatient and want to know what happens. I also screw up many things, and with Bioware I sometimes turn into a sob puddle while Alistair dumps or I have to slaughter my warden's clan or Solas leaves me or... oh, wait.

Well, my canon playthrough is usually the one I enjoy more and I find more fun to roleplay. It's also not set in stone, I changed my canon warden and my hawke origins recently after replaying the DA series (that I had not touched in some time). Roleplay and fun are the most important things for me in games like Dragon Age, so... :)

In this case, my canon Inquisitor is a mage dalish elf who romanced Solas.

My first, favorite, and canon playthrough was a female mage Lavellan who romanced Solas.

Despite my gripes about how BioWare handled the Dalish this game, I love how so many areas, quests, and significant story elements are steeped in elven history and lore. (The Exalted Plains, Emerald Graves, Emprise du Lion, Halamshiral, several elven temples, the Arbor Wilds, Temple of Mythal, the reveal that Flemeth is Mythal and Solas is Fen'Harel, Skyhold being of elven origin, the orb Corypheus uses being ancient elven, etc.) And playing an elf who romances the resident elven expert on ancient elven lore who turns out to be an ancient elven god just makes it all that much more significant, personally relevant, and interesting.

I've tried playing again many times as different races and classes with different romantic interests. While many of them are so interesting and enjoyable too, none of them capture my fancy quite as much as that playthrough.

EDIT: Usually my first playthrough ends up being my most interesting, fun, favorite,, and canon. I guess because I'm experiencing the content for the first time, so it creates a greater emotional impact and a more "pure roleplaying experience" since I don't know what's coming.

Usually it ends up being whatever story I find most interesting, which is often but not always the one that flows best with the main story.

For example: In Origins, I did a Dalish elf because it flowed most smoothly into joining the Wardens and makes Witch Hunt a much more poignant closing to the Warden's story.

In 2, I felt a Mage friendly Mage Hawke would make Anders' betrayal of her trust more interesting

DAI, Dalish romancing Solas, there're too many elf related bits especially towards the end of the game for me to ignore, not to mention drinking from the Well and potential DLC follow up to the Dread Wolf.

I have three canon playthroughs:

- Billie Amell, female human mage, romanced Alistair, didn't do the Dark Ritual, Alistair sacrificed himself. Daliah Hawke, female humorous rogue, romanced Anders, sided with mages. Riley Trevelyan, female human mage, romanced Cullen, didn't touch the Well of Sorrows.

- Julie Cousland, female human rogue, romanced Alistair, convinced Alistair to do the Dark Ritual, became Queen. Hayden Hawke, female humorous mage, rival romanced Anders, sided with templars. (currently playing) Belle Trevelyan, female human rogue, will most likely romance Cullen, probably won't touch the Well of Sorrows.

- Marevas Mahariel, female Daliah elven rogue, romanced Zevran, (sadly) convinced Alistair to do the Dark Ritual. Natalie Hawke, female humorous warrior, romanced Anders, sided with mages. Buffy Adaar, female Qunari mage, romanced Iron Bull, didn't touch the Well of Sorrows.

I'd call them all good characters, although Julie Cousland and Hayden Hawke are grey. Also, humorous Hawke is the only way to play. ;)

Mine's a combination of the above I suppose. That said, I am redoing it to refine my choices, (and to enjoy it with a better face). I must say, some were made to try and weed out more disapproval points from Solas, (since the punch scene was just so much fun), and also to avoid him thinking we were friends. In the end, I made some decisions that were ultimately out of character so in my first and canon playthrough 2.0, I will have the perfect playthrough.

And since my Tabris, Hawke and Lavellan all have diverse opinions and personalities, I feel like it makes for a good story flow as these are all individuals rather than clones.

I'll just be jumping onto the female (mage) Lavellan train as well, don't mind me. XD

But I felt that her given role, combined with the Solas romance, in regards to everything that happens in the game with Elvish lore and locations, was just so much more interesting. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it so much, either, prior to that run through. Made my playthrough with her all the more enjoyable!

Besides that I'm not really sure which would be my... back up canon? XD My first Quizzy was a human rogue (romanced Cullen), but I think I'm enjoying my Adaar more right now. Neither top Lavellan, though.

Most fun for me. This is why all of my Canon characters so far have been mages. I've always been better at playing ranged characters, archers and mages.

Warden Sola Amell who romanced Alistair, no dark ritual, Alistair died killing the archdemon. Sola hates the title "Hero of Ferelden" because she feels she isn't the hero of the fifth blight, Alistair is. He's the one who gave his life after all. Part of the reason Sola became my Canon Warden was because of the Broken Circle quest. I just found it more believable that a mage could survive the Fade like the PC is required too. Cullen is the other part. :P

Moira Hawke romanced Fenris, sided with the mages. I admit Moira is only a mage because that let's me keep Carver. Carver is my favorite character is all of DA.

Eleanor Trevelyan was my most fun play through. Mage, romanced Cullen it was just fun! Of course that might be because I had just finished romancing Solas. :'( But a Circle mage I think has more reason to be at the Conclave than any of the other backgrounds, especially if they are pro-circle like my character was. And Cullen's just a sweetheart. I liked that my character was shy during the romance with Cullen too, that they were both kinda dorks. Which was a nice change from Hawke who was kinda aggressive in her pursuit of Fenris.

This isn't to say I don't have other characters, I have several Wardens (Cya Tabris, Ishara Maheriel, Marianne Cousland) and Inquisitors (Lorinth Levellan, Rosemary Trevelyan, Arianne Levellan, Tela Adaar, Kyna Trevelyan, Miriannas Levellan) only one Hawke though, but Sola, Moira, and Eleanor are my favorites.

My first and canon Inquisitor is a Cadash with a violent Carta background. I think the Blackwall romance surprised me the most and complimented the overall playthrough really well. At first they clicked because it was all about working hard. And then I started to feel like Cadash was a fraud, that she wasn't really this shining example of a great person that he seemed to see, that maybe he just liked the idea of her as a Herald more than her. Her Carta background did get addressed and he made it clear that her past didn't define her, it was her current actions. And that really dovetailed very nicely with the things that Cassandra and Leliana had been saying all along, that the mark and the Inquisition changes you. So I felt that there was character growth for Cadash along with an attitude adjustment. Turns out Blackwall was a fraud as well, but the difference was that he made the choice to be a better person and actually had been doing that all along while Cadash was kind of thrust into that role without actually choosing anything. The epilogue felt like an actual beginning rather than an ending.

My most fun Inquisitor was my second Cadash with a smuggling background (I had an Aeducan and Brosca import and it didn't feel right to play a non-dwarf and cheat my second HoF out of writing a letter to a fellow dwarf). I had to make her different from my first character so I created her as an older broad and roleplayed her as Judi Dench's "M" from the James Bond series. It was fantastic. All choices were strictly based on getting intel. Even Dorian surprised me when I had recruited him after siding with templars. There was a conversation where Cadash asked him if he wasn't secretly a spy for the venatori. He dismissed the notion and rebutted with, "But I am the ideal spy: charming, clever, perfect teeth and hair. It all fits. How about this: let me help and you can hang me later, if you wish. I look good in rope." I loved it. He effectively became my 007. Of course, she drank from the well. That stuff was top-secret info -- for her eyes only! =p I really enjoyed that game. Due to her spymaster status, she had points in all the knowledge perks. This was the complete opposite of my Brosca who I avoided giving any persuasion points due to her bodyguard thug status. Brosca failed 98% of the persuade checks in the game and had to have her party companion intervene a few times to move the quests along. I really enjoyed that game too because I saw dialogue I normally wouldn't have seen and it just felt more realistic overall.

Yes, but which would you import into DA4? Or would you alternate depending on playthrough?

I alternate. I did the same with my playthroughs for DAI. Aside from those, my "canon" ultimately is definitely a Qunari.

My first PTs tend to be my canon. They're my purest in terms of RP with all their flaws and unexpected turns.
It's usually a female named Ryal (race doesn't matter) and she's a rogue or has more roguelike skills if I can help it. No specific personality traits other than a small (or big) mischievous side.

Ryal is a human DW assassin who romanced Cullen, was good friends with almost all her companions, and generally looked out for the good of everyone. She believed in Andraste but wasn't keen on the Chantry. She was diplomatic on most issues and believes in second chances depending on the circumstances. She fought for freedom for the mages, brought the Wardens into the Inq fold, and left mystical stuff to those who lived/dealt with magic (having the anchor was enough magic for her). She did accidentally harden Lel and she helped her become Divine (she surprisingly agreed with her on the change enactment).

My most fun Inquisitor is my dwarf Alcina though. She's a champion S&S warrior who's bold, brash, and unapologetic. She loved her Carta life and was good at it as an enforcer. She is absolutely smitten with Iron Bull, is great friends with Sera and Dorian, and is friendly enough with everyone else. She looks out for those who need a champion and doesn't tolerate jerkholes who think they can do whatever they want, whenever they want just because. She let the Templars remain Templars, brought the Wardens into the Inq fold, wanted all the knowledge from the well, and supports Cass as Divine.

Warrior Cousland goes from Prince oberyn type character into Bruce Wayne/Batman.Goes from vengeful to neutral & ends up giving up the wardens for Morrigan & his son.
Aggresive Hawke who is a complete badass who doesn't care what happens as long as his family/Isabella/friends are safe.
Warrior Trevelyen is a complete idealist with a bit of pessimism.Realistic version of Superman/religious monk.No romance.

I have two canons, one female mages and one male non-mages.

I tend to play as a mage first as this is my favorite class. My first mage pt would always be my female canon. I always invest the most on this particular pt as this is a near-blind first pt for the game. Then I would reload the pt to alter some decisions I've made (say, I accidentaly hardened Leli and didn't know I can reconcile Briala and Celene) to make it perfect. So my DAI mage canon is Gelsey Trevelyan who romanced Cullen in the worldstate of Rosenna Amell and Viola Hawke.

After learning much from the other pts, I would then decide my canon male pt base on the story and RP factor. I tend to side with the templars with the male canon so I can see the contrast between this and my female canon. Templar Jeremiah Trevelyan (who romanced Josephine) seems to be the one for the time being.

For me, it's really a matter of Trial and Error. It took a lot of playthroughs of DA:O to get my canon Warden. It would probably take another playthrough to refine my canon Hawke sufficiently (but I don't know if I have the stomach for another DA:2 run yet lol) but with Inquisition the first character I made fit so well it was quite shocking. They didn't look like the symbolic manifestation of horror most of my characters look like, and the story flowed pretty well. I'm doing my current playthrough to refine it and get everything how I want it.

Well, when I'm trying to figure out what's "comfortably canon", I tend to go for themes.

So, for one world state the theme might be redemption; proving to yourself and others that you're better than you think you are, that people can change, that there's hope... so, my carta thug Brosca found love with Leliana, he became a Paragon and she became Divine. My snarky Hawke never wanted to be anyone but Bethany's hero, but somehow she and Isabela wound up taking a stand for the mages as some kind of deadly pirate/ninja duo. And my criminal Cadash will fall for Blackwall, the two of them seeing only the best in each other~ <3

It doesn't even have to be as complicated as all that. It can be silly! You could base your world state on Tsunderes (Morrigan, Fenris, Cassandra), the Dalish (Mahariel, Merrill, Lavellan), BRING ON THE PAIN (Morrigan, Anders, Solas)...

It's a process, is all I'm saying. :P

Male rogue Trevelyan, but my male rogue Cadash is giving him a run for his money. (I still like Dorian with Trevelyan better than Cadash, though, so I doubt I'll make the switch.)

Easy decision for me, since I rarely ever replay this sort of game, especially since I'm a completionist who wants to do everything and idles around for ages just to hear more banters. I find a character concept that I really want to play, and if it remains the only one as it often does, it's the canon by default.

Most of the time, neither the gameplay nor the slight variations in a game's story are enough to motivate me to do it all over again, in no small part because I'm often not all that interested in said slight story variations and/or they have such little impact that I don't see the point. For example, what I know about In Hushed Whispers leaves me cold, and I really don't like Fiona, so my original plan to maybe try a mage-alliance in a second playthrough is pretty much on ice. Other reasons that get in the way of replays are the fact that I couldn't possibly care less about "romance", which seems to be a frequent driving force between other people's repeated playthroughs, and that I have no interest in a**hole/ruthless/evil characters either. Also, I heavily gravitate towards playing tanks ... it just feels wrong when my character is all squishy and someone else is getting beaten on.

So I tend to stick with my one canon character, and reload different saves from that game to check different outcomes for story variations that I am kind of interested in, but not enough to dedicate a game to them (like seeing Varric's solution to Cole's quest, and the immediate aftermath on the more-human path instead of my more-spirit canon).

I change my canon state every now and then depending on what I currently find 'interesting'. For example, a long time my interest in elves subsided and I was interested in ruling (Game of Thrones influence, haha), so my Warden canon was actually a human male noble who ruled with Anora. >.>

My current canon state is

Warden: Dalish Elf hunter. Deeply anti Chantry, very fascinated in the lore and rebirth of the Elvhen. Romanced Morrigan, had a baby and went through the Eluvian with her.

Hawke: Diplomatic warrior lady who loves her family but ends losing it all. She lost Carver in Lothering, Bethany in the Deep Roads and Leandra in act 2. She was always supportive of Templar ideals in that they are 'guardians' (she guarded her family from demonic possession), and after act 2 she fully supported them. Romanced Merril, destroyed the Mirror and fled Kirkwall. Dies in DAI.

Inquisitor: She'll be a Dalish Elf mage, that's all I know. I have played the game, but I can't decide what makes a more interesting story. The Dalish Keeper who follows tradition and romances Solas, or a sarcastic Dalish Keeper who thinks the Elves should merge with society and romance Cullen. You know, the big life questions.

To answer your question, I without fail play the game and decide the canon based on whats interesting in the story. This also includes replaying old games and changing my choices if I think a different out come is more interesting, such as not doing the dark ritual or siding with the mages or what ever.

So in DA4, after I've played it once I may re-do DAI if I romance Cullen but the Solas romance turns out to be far more interesting story wise.

My first character my Dalish two handed warrior is my canon because my Dalish Warden is the Hero of Ferelden .i picked a warrior Hawke with Bethany as a Warden.
Romanced Josephine but lost my clan. Freed the Mages. Cassandra is Divine. Alistair and Anora rule. Celene still rules exiled her ex lover and killed Gaspard. Stroud was sacrificed.

@The topic:

My "canon" protagonist out of many is inevitably the one who feels most real to me. This may be the first, or it may be one started years after the game was released. It is usually not the one whose story flowed seamlessly, because the themes associated with my character that make them my "canon" are independent from the game's main plot to some degree. It will not be the one I had must fun to play, but rather the one I spent most time thinking about, considering decisions they would make and how they'd relate to NPCs.

However, there are a few constants: they are all human mages, and I refine them all through several playthroughs. Also, I make mostly pro-mage decisions in their stories, and if there is a decision that empowers a magical, alien or "other", but non-evil aspect of anything, that challenges preconceptions of what it means to be human and/or flies in the face of tradition, in-world or out-of-world, I tend to take that option.

Whenever I do decide to form a "canon", I tend to something that speaks to me both from narrative standpoint and a thematic one. I chose a City Elf Warden - have a male and female one, one a S&S warrior, another a rogue - in part because it reminded me of parts of my life. There's also an understated sense of struggle and a bit of wonder in finding value in an environment that typically thinks you don't have or deserve it, that I liked about the City Elf's origin.

Spoiler

So yeah, while I liked the Human Noble, I tend toward the underdogs. While I do play as other classes and am not pro-mage or pro-Chantry, I did play as a Qunari mage in both genders since I imagine they would probably face the worst suspicion and discrimination.
