Personally I don't really ever have a cannon character I just go with whatever I did in my last playthrough and use that as my active one to pass through into any new games involving the character. I think the Quizzy I've enjoyed most though was probably my last one Topaz my female dalish rift mage. She looked out for her people and was kind to her friends and deadly to her enemies. Although I have to admit my current one Sobek a female Dalish rogue is running her pretty close

My Mage Lavellan. She's a feisty redhead who romanced Solas and became best friends with Cass, Cole and Dorian. She jokes with her friends, is diplomatic with nobles and aggressive with her enemies. She sides with the Mages, making them allies, blackmailed "the three stooges" into working together for Orlais and let Morrigan drink from the Well.

My first Inquisitor is my canon one. She is an archer rogue Lavellan who ended up romancing Cullen. I played her as really nice and understanding with a playful sense of humor. No matter if she did not completely agree with her other companions she would still get along with them or simply humor them. She had a big soft spot for Cole and brought him along everywhere fearing how others would treat him if she left him alone at Skyhold. She allowed him to become more human. Cassandra and Dorian were also what she would consider best friends.

She sided with the Templars, allowed the Grey Wardens to stay after Alistair sacrificed himself, had Celene and Briala make up, and drank from the well.

I've made two other Inquisitors, but I never finished with their playthroughs similar to two non canon Wardens I have in DAO. There is something difficult about playing a character that isn't my canon one, and I am loyal to whoever my canon characters romance. I get attached to them. Most of my playthroughs have just been recreating her and completing content I missed in my previous attempts.

DAO, my canon Warden is a female city elf warrior who romanced Zevran, made Anora Queen, and survived killing the Archdemon by making Alistair do the dark ritual.

In DA2 I'm worse with repeating the same character. I always play a rogue sarcastic female Hawke who romanced Fenris, and I always make her look the same. She took a somewhat neutral stance on the mage vs. templar issue, until the end where she sided with the mages and executed Anders.

I usually play the game once (just to get the 'feel' of the overall game) then replay the character again (sigh. In DAI is more like 're-made her again, with slightly different name just not the get mixed up with the 1st PT save) and usually the 2nd PT is my canon (with decisions not being far off from the 1st PT)

3rd PT is pretty much my 'alternate universe' of my canon.

As for romance wise... weeellllll... My ladies tend to get 'stuck' with 1 LI in a game XD (my Shepards will always have Kaidan and in DAI my protags will always romance Cullen, LoL.. yeah.. I really tried to break that habit. But can't seemed to do it XD)

This is a very cool question, precisely because how I imagined my canon would turn out is so NOT how it actually turned out.  A first for me, in the Dragon Age universe, actually.  I typically have a really good idea about my canon in the first playthrough, as it happened in Origins and DA2.  Not this go-around.

Maybe it's because I really did plan my first Inquisitor so dang much in the year leading up to the game's release.  I knew I wanted a non-human Inquisitor, but I had absolutely no real desire to play a dwarf and was a bit leery of the Qunari.  Both for body-type reasons (I just don't find them appealing, sorry).  So I planned to make my Inquisitor elven.

And that actually worked out really well for my first playthrough.  I think an elven Inquisitor fits the dynamic of the story better than any of the races, a real "underdog" and "easily underestimated" character who's story just becomes that much more interesting.  But while I enjoyed my first playthrough immensely, it didn't necessarily feel absolutely correct, either.  That particular playthrough was a female Lavellan archer, who romanced Cullen.  It was loads of fun and the romance arc was truly awesome.  It just wasn't my canon, and I knew it as soon as I finished the playthrough.

So I made another female Lavellan.  But that second time I made her a mage and she romanced Solas.  Oh, and that was a really spectacular playthrough.  For anyone who's not played that kind of character -- do it!  The emotional depth of the story really blew me away.  I was almost wiped at the end of the playthrough and stepped away from the game for a good week, before deciding to venture back and make another character.  I mean, I was convinced that was my canon, a mage Lavellan who romanced Solas and life is good.

That made the next playthrough I ventured into what I thought would be purest fun.  Just to see something new and different.  I stayed with Lavellan, but that time I made Lavellan a guy who used a sword and shield.  I decided I wanted to see the Dorian romance, anyway.  That, and I turned around and sided with the mages.  And it was during that particular playthrough that the story just ... I dunno how else to say it, but it really came to life.  It was very nearly perfect.  I think the only thing I wasn't keen on, was siding with the mages (I really prefer the Barris storyline to anything of Fiona).  So I recreated the character and completed yet another playthrough with him.

My absolute canon playthrough ended up far different than I imagined, then.  A male mage Lavellan, who sides with the Templars and ends up in some kind of HEA with Dorian.  We'll see what comes of my guy in the DLC's to come.  But I absolutely adore the crap out of him, in the meantime.

This is amazing how we can all play the same game and create totally different stories with so diverse characters.

I have never had problems with choosing canon. It's always my first character. They develope as I play and often turn out totally different than planned. If I go for second playthrough it's always with the same character only to see other possible outcomes (and I never change LI) ;)

Inquisition is the first game I have a problem with. I played with female mage Trevelyan, but post credit scene changed EVERYTHING. So now I do my second playthrough as a female mage Lavellan named Larian. That's the name I planned for my first human DAI character initially, but decided Larian Trevelyan sounded stupid and went with Narienne instead ;) My second character is cool, but I'm still attached to the first Inky. But in the end I will choose the canon that is more interesting for the story I suppose.

I hope we will get some major expansion to continue the DAI events, something Awakening-like. I can clearly see what my first Trevelyan good-hearted Inky will do when she finds out about Solas' involvement with Corry. She considers him a friend, so she will do everything to justify his motives and spare/save him, unless he would make it absolutely impossible. The second Lavellan Inky on the other hand... She is not really a kind of person who would let her judgement be clauded by personal feelings. Since she romanced Solas, she will certainly feel used by him and she doesn't like to be used very much. But being used by an evil elven god who she is in love with is another story though. I can totally picture her invoking a holy war upon him as well as joining him in whatever evil or not evil plan he has. I don't know and I'm curious myself. One way or the other, blood will be shed. I only hope that if things go really bad my Mahariel Warden will return, kick some asses and set things straight. She is the coolest :D If she weren't somewhere wherever, non of this Warden mess would have happened in DAI and Clarel would know her place.

My canon run of all the three games is:

DAO: Female rogue (Assassin, Bard, Duelist) Cousland with Alistair romance, sided with the mages, made peace between elves and werewolves, destroyed the Anvil, made Bhelen king of Orzammar, did DR and became a Queen of Ferelden

DA2: Female mage (Spirit Healer, Force Mage) purple!Hawke with Sebastian romance, Carver became a Warden, battled the Arishok, sided with the mages

DAI: Female mage (Knight Enchanter) Trevelyan with Cullen romance, sided with the mages, saved Hawke and kept the Wardens, let the big three rule Orlais together, let Morrigan drink from the Well, had Leliana as the Divine (the amount of headcanons I have for this one... Currently, I have approx. 80 000 words of unfinished and unpublished material of her journey aka my fan fiction)

But I also have a "well I like to play this one too" -run also:

DAO: Female mage (Spirit Healer, Arcane Warrior, Battlemage) Amell with Alistair romance, sided with the mages, saved the elves, destroyed the Anvil, made Harrowmont king of Orzammar, did DR and let Anora rule Ferelden while Amell herself stayed with the Wardens with Alistair

DA2: Female rogue (Assassin, Shadow) blue!Hawke with Anders romance, Bethany became a Circle mage, battled the Arishok, sided with the mages

DAI: Female rogue (Tempest) Lavellan with Solas romance, sided with the templars, killed Hawke and exiled the Wardens, made Briala and Celene reconcile, drank from the Well, had Cassandra as the Divine

Canon happened to be my nightmare run mage, Caitlyn.  That pt was one of my later ones.  Canon is usually never my first pt - that is always the experiment.  LOL.  I will admit that the more I play the more I have to force myself not to meta-game though - and that is hard because I actively wanted softened Leliana as Divine since I had Cass, Viv (three times in a row!) and hardened Leliana as Divine previously (those were not meta-gamed, it was just how it happened).  I have an overall mental arc in the DA universe in that I'm pro-mage so my canon pt is going to either be a mage or side with the mages.  In DA 2, since I like Bethany I never play as a mage (which hurts me.. but Carver can suck it).  In DAO, I can go either circle mage or Cousland warrior, but still pro-mage.

It's hard to choose a canon, because my three most recent play throughs had great stories.

I'd say my DW Assassin lady Inquisitor, Natalia Trevelyan, is my favourite and most fun. She worked hard to become a strong leader, valued her relationships and supported her best friend, Cassandra, to become Divine. Aside from leading a big organization and killing with finesse during fights, Natalia always manages to have fun. Whether it's playing pranks with Sera, teasing Cassandra about smutty romance stories or getting a little kinky with the love of her life, Cullen. She can be cocky and reckless sometimes, but not afraid to speak her mind.

I shy away from having a "headcanon" as I always have several characters i like for different reasons.

But my most favourite is Lady Mage Trevelyan. I find it meshes well with the overall story without there being too many too alien occurences as there can be playing as another race. They have a better reason to be at the conclave and their class has good conflicts without clashing with the humancentric writing.

Also I liked her romance with Cullen.

My first was Amolla Vollsa (human female sw/sh warrior). She was ok. I liked how she was a air headed woman into women with a god complex. In a way it is my main cannon because if I were to do a fan story I would center around her and her brother Draven Vollsa as the heroes and do intend to have my female rouge Hawke Kattie who was a semi evil Hawke and sacrifice Stroud and have a few other things happen along the way.

Most fun had to be Chasimess Winters (female human DWK rouge). Not only was I playing it on NIGHTMARE but i really liked her over all character. Since she came from my Moonphase Demoir storyline from DAO/DAA (did way to much evil ****) and Lightwind Demoir (was the oppisite in DA 2) Chasimess was the happy medium between the two where she was charasimatic, enigmatic, and sarcastic. Runner up has to be Malaioniss Wyvenlight (male elf bow rouge). Was another NIGHTMARE playthrough but did a-lot of firsts: male on male relationships, finished a mosiac, killed Hawke and a few other things. Also I loved his impossible buck teeth. Lol.

My most interesting one probably had to be Malaioniss again because he was a elf worshiping a human god and saw Tevintir from his angle and Dorian's angle. If he can be carried over to a Tevintir game he would be neat to play because he could adapt quickly to the society without being unaware of everything unlike some of my other playthroughs.

Most meh one was Draven Vollsa (male human 2H warrior). Story wise it wasn't anything exciting and I spent 80% playing as Sera since Draven would play a game of "DRAVEN SMASH!!!" Was almost to easy.

Story flow would be Chasimess Winters and Malaioniss again. Chasimess had Liliana mention that she has been looking for my Warden since she loved her, Lightwind was being a team player while Chasimess was being saracstic around her, and Chasimess had a thing for Iron Bull but typical her burned him on a offer for sex and wound up with Josephine who she kisses quite often but knows about Liliana's watchful eye. Malaioniss had Morrigan mention her avoidance of her warden lover, and how Kelbaton (Hawke) was more or less acting like a terrorist which made Malaioniss like "ZOMG! Killing people is uncool!". The only down point of Malaioniss not taking the well whcih felt semi out of place but the fact that Alistar will lead the wardens to a battle sounds cool.

Current playthorugh is a female mage qunari. She's been not bad so far. I deleted a female qunari mage because I was meh with her design so I made a different one that looked good. When I get back to my point I just wonder how the chemistry between her and iron Bull will go even though my qunari will romance Sera.

For me, it's Circle mage. I like how they fit into the Chantry crisis and how it picks up from Asunder and DA2. And how they differ and distinguish themselves from other "main" mages in the trilogy (I romanced Morrigan and Anders in other games). I'm a little undecided on many other parts of the story though. I haven't played in awhile, so I was picking it up again to test out new Quest paths.

2rd choice - I enjoy to create a character that doesn't fit - like mage for big qunari, assassin for clumsy dwarves and warrior for tiny elves.

But I play now mage noble human that fits the role of Inquisitor most of all for me as he was born to lead and he always replies how mages should be free. He is my canon now:

DAO: Rogue Lady Cousland romancing Alistair and became Queen of Ferelden.

DAII: Sarcastic Mage Lady Hawke rivalmancing Merrill, sided with Mages and executed Anders. Grey Warden Carver.

DAI: Mage Lavellan romancing Cullen. Mainly because it's my most 'perfect' playthrough, as well as most completed. I mean, I have Empress Celene (and Briala) as my ******, (she clings desperately to our alliance- I guess it's cause I have blackmail on her and Briala + 100 Court Approval) I have Leliana as my softened Divine, I have all my companions as my bff (except Vivienne), it's my most satisfying playthrough.

Much like I've gone back and decided on which Warden and Hawke ended up "canon" by the way they're portrayed in future games, I suspect I'll be doing the same with my Inquisitor.

1. If the Inquisitor as a person continues to be of importance apart from the organization s/he's a part of (like the Warden ended up), then I'll probably canonize my Qunarette, who stuck with the organization mostly because of aligned goals, but who I see as pretty restless and eventually wanting to act more freely.

2. If the Inquisition as an organization continues to be of importance, but the Inquisitor him/herself is not noteworthy in future games (or if neither the group nor the Inquisitor is noteworthy), my expected canon will be male Trevelyan, who of all my plays so far is the most towards natural leadership, and is the sort to delegate and trust his companions.

3. Finally, if both the individual and the group are equally important, and there's further connection made between the Inquisition and the ancient elves, and/or the Inquisitor drinking from the Well of Sorrows becomes a major plot point and/or Solas plays a major role (and remains connected to the DAI story), then I'll be going with my Lavellan, who also willingly leads, but took a lot more of the burden on herself, up to and including drinking from the Well.

Interestingly, though, outside of my head-canoning of their general character traits, the actual decisions don't vary a whole heck of a lot.  Cassandra is Divine, Hawke defeated Nightmare and is now trying to figure out how to get out of the Fade, the rest of the Wardens are still in Orlais, Celene is Empress (although she is still watching over her shoulder), and the Templars were disbanded and recruited and stayed with the Inquisition rather than returning to the Chantry.  That's just the world state I like best and that I think feels most "natural".

I've always been of the opinion that:

A) It makes little-no sense for the Inquisitor to be an elf, dwarf or Qunari based on the backstory those are given. Their reasons for being at the Conclave are rather weak, especially the Qunari (the Chantry would NOT hire Qunari mercs, I absolutely guarantee it). Thus, the Inquisitor should be human - Trevelyan has the best excuse for being there.

B ) As for class, the one with the best justification for being there is obviously the Mage since he is an active member of one of the two sides, followed by the Warrior because of family ties with the Templars. You could play the Rogue as the 'neutral' character, but that also gives him less reason to be there. Bioware have said that, similar to how the Warden was envisioned initially as a warrior, the Inquisitor was envisioned as a rogue, and while that does make thematic sense, story wise it makes less sense than a Mage. So in my opinion, the Inquisitor should be a mage. However, if you want to be "thematic" and go with the flow, like making the Warden a warrior or Hawke a mage, then you can make them a rogue, as long as you're OK with a more dubious reason for being at the Conclave.

C) Following from that, what specialization? What should the Inquisitor 'be'? If as I suggest they should be, they are a mage, I should think it obvious Necromancy is off the table. Too controversial, wouldn't win you many friends to be known as the leader of an undead army. Between Rift Mage and Knight-Enchanter it ultimately comes down to what personality you give them. Are they the bold leader type? Or the curious academic type? Your answer to that will determine which you pick.

If you do pick a warrior, I would argue Templar fits best, but only if you play the character that way. If your Quizzy has reservations about what Lyrium will do to them and would prefer not to risk it, then be a Champion. Reaver is too 'barbaric' to be a reasonable pick for someone of noble birth, it's not believable.

If you do insist on going Rogue, you must be a Tempest. Of the 3, it's the only one that has an in-your-face, up-front power feel to it, it makes your character feel like they're a leader even if they're a rogue. Assassins are people you would hire, their line of work isn't something a noble like Trevelyan would get into, nor would it score you any political points at all. And Artificer is simply too typical, to mundane, it is, again, not representative of a leader, but of a dirty-fighting ranger or street rougue. You're of noble birth, if you're going to be a rebel and be the leader of a holy army then at least be a badass, not a cowardly trap layer. On that note, use daggers. Bows are not befitting a person who is supposed to lead the charge.

I usually try and make my first playthrough my main/canon, since that's when I go in blind and have to make on-the-spot decisions w/o knowledge of what's to come or whether or not the decisions made were good. The exception here for me was DA:O. Since I didn't know anything about Dragon Age at that time - especially its lore and whatnot, my choice of character was based on other fantasy media. After I realized the greatness of master race dwarf, however, I played through the game once more with actual knowledge of the world and it made it much more enjoyable. Thus, for that game I chose my second playthrough as my canon.

For Inquisition I tried the former as well, but despite my better judgment I chose a scumbag elf Inquisitor. Luckily the elf models in DA:I look absolutely appalling, so I quickly changed to a human. I thought about making a dwarf, but their choice of beards are lacking and a surface dwarf fighting demons was a weird thought. Luckily enough, once again, the Inquisitor's personality is locked in at nonexistent - with the potential to be lame and mundane based on playstyle, so it fit perfectly with the vanilla race that is human. The Qunari are equally as bad looking as the elves, so they were out of the question as well. Not to mention they were TalV, and I wasn't about to play no heretic. Rolled a mage for obvious reasons and regretted it also for obvious reasons. But I felt I picked the right choices and was satisfied with my first playthrough that - even though sword-and-board Templar is the most fun class in Inq - I didn't feel the need to replay it a second time and my canon became my first character.

I create multiple import states to allow me to play games using as many combinations as possible. That said, I usually consider the worldstate of my favorite inquisitor canon, even if I'll play all the others for fun.

My Cannon Inquisitor:

73ezrPf.png?3

Name: Nathair Trevalyan (third Inquistor I made)

Age: 35

Two Handed Warrior

Love Interest; Cassandra Pentaghast

Back Story:

My Inquisitor is more of a tragic character whose life, in some respect, has always been tampered with by the Chantry. He being a fourth born was tasked with fighting battles, due to the fact that he was expendable, i.e. he could impose the family name without the same risk as sending an heir. Battle was also a means for his father to show the Templar order that his son was a skilled candidate. Nathair was destined to become a part of a religion he did not much believe in. On his face, among the many, is an ugly scar (the ugliest for him) from the time his father had booted him as a boy, for questioning the logic of the Chant of Light. When he grew to be a young man Nathair ran away from home and became a mercenary, this lasted for about a year, until his own mother (with tears in her eyes) and brother found him in the Hanged Man in Kirkwall, and brought him home. Nathair was put on probation, which did not allow him to join the Templars until they could determine that he was a true believer, and not beholden to any radical dispositions toward the Chantry. The Mage Templar civil war broke out before that could happen.

Nathair has developed this analogy of life: that it is like being shot from cannon and on the horizon is the inevitability of a barn door studded with rusted farm implements and whatever else. Looking back one can see innumerable historical examples of crushed individuals, and forward is one's own particular spot to die in. However beside you it is possible to stray, not the particular line of travel, but from the horror of the approaching and final cataclysm. Another someone(s), whose distance might be longer or shorter than your own, can come closer and traverse with you, and for a time you can be content together, thus ignorant of the approaching termination. However, in the end, we all slam into our own demise, alone.

Nathair does not believe in greater goods or lesser evils, he is not a believer in the chantry and finds morality to be much more eclectic than simply black and white. Nathair believes that we all have one life, and we owe it to ourselves not to allow something so precious to be dictated by someone or something else. Somewhat, unfortunately for him, his other (not the first women he has been with, but the only one he has actually loved) ends up being Cassandra. Their differing views on the Chantry is not the greatest strain on their relationship, Cassandra is quite sensitive and companionate when it comes to  Nathiar's upbringing, what strains their relationship is their differing views on morality, and the individual. Cassandra flaunts the dogma of the greater good and the populace, while Nathair is much more a philosopher, and an individualist.

Spoiler

Nathair mostly uses the so called "violent" responses, and the middle humorous responses.

It was real close but surprisingly it isn't a female rogue. Kradeche Adaar was the first time I really immersed myself in the story. Rift Mage and wears that Battlemage Coat like it was specifically made for her...cause it was lol. I remember when I got those schematics and we were in Emprise Du Lion stuntin on foes with the all white and nevarite accents. She's the gentle giant, for all intents and purposes. Romanced Sera. Didn't feel forced. She was also the first one that had an imported world state. If not for that, Lysindra Cadash might very well have stolen the canon role as a rogue again.

My cannon inquisitor is,  Daeris Lavelan who romanced Solas.

She is a Rift mage with the exact same abilities as Solas

She drank from The Well

respected temple of mythal ( but did not ally with sentinels)

Abelas didn't leave

She is equipped currently with vestments of the dragon hunter and seer staff

Conscripted Templars

Briala and Celene Recociled

she has currently killed 8 dragons (9 including red lyrium)
