Um. What?

Basically it means it is up to the player. With the right explanation, all the potential inquisitors can fit in line with the story (since there are quite a few gaps in how things went down). But because there is no perfect explanation for any of them, none of them make real sense within the story all the time.

Understand?

In the end, I can't pick a canon inquisitor because I cannot have an inquisitor that fits within the story perfectly, and the ones that I like the best (as I played all the race/class combinations) all seemed off in some way, shape or form. Makes me think about just creating a worldstate with a random inquisitor and leave it at that.

Not really. "Perfect explanation" is a bit undefined.

What? "Perfect explanation" essentially means that. It is an explanation so fitting in with the story, that it is the only one. because any explanation can fit the story, there is no perfect one.

Fun question:

My 'canon' inquisitor is Talan Adaar, two-handed warrior, over-all goody goody knight in shining armor type, and romancer of Dorian Pavus.

Spoiler

My favorite inquisitor is Graeme Cadash, lovable dual wield rogue and dashing do-gooder.  And Bull's kadan.

Spoiler

If this is the reason you can't find yourself identifying with a Quizzy you've made than more power to ya.  To flat out say that "none" of the backstories and/or specializations really fit the main story just isn't true.

This isn't meant to be snobby but by definition perfection is unattainable... so it's not exactly a legit critique.

To be honest, I dislike the term "canon" completely. I prefer to use "world state" inquisitor. Canon just sounds like one inquisitor is objectively better than another, and all inquisitors have to be like that inquisitor

Canon for me just indicates which of your IQ's you prefer/like the most not that they are inherently the better story fit.

My canon is as follows

Origins: My male dalish mage warden recruited all possible companions who are also all alive and well and romanced morrigan leading to a child being born with the soul of an old god. My warden executed loghain, survived the final battle with the archdemon and made Alistair king to ensure his own safety. Acquired and defeated flemeth for my morgypoo while choosing to leave the urn of sacred ashes intact. He helped defend and prepare redclife saved connor and while at it did the dirty with a sexy desire demon. Ensured Bella received ownership of the tavern, isolde remained alive and that Owens daughter escaped. Coericed bevin to give me the sword and freed him while I did so, back in ostagar I cured a mabari and fed my lunch to a prisoner to ensure I had better odds at survival. I met the architect and let him live killing the brood mother(she nasty) and kept both the keep and amaranthine safe. Nathaniel is alive and well while I played matchmaker for oghren, I brokered peace between the dalish and werewolves and played matchmaker again discovering I had a knack for it. I saved the halla and told some dude his wife got too hairy and died. I returned some newb to his camp and found ironbark so it was cool. In orzamaar I sided with branka, told a mom her kid died and put beheln on the throne then told the chantry to go stick it, am I right? Reconciled a few families, told a kid named dagna to gtfo out orzamaar and put some pleb on the assembly. Realized some dwarf was after my elfy man meat to have a kid so I boarded the nope train and decided complete a lyruim deal, return some dusty tome to an even dustier library and provide the lod noble connections.

Being a mage myself I supported the mages wholeheartedly, despite them being idiots. At least I saved the first enchanter and Cullen proposed something but I wasn't listening so I told him no. In denerim ser lawdy is alive, I told some bann his son was into bdsm and he thanked me. Went on a crime wave, then returned an amulet and ring because I felt bad. McAlister found goldigger and justine got her scrolls. While drinking I cleared the pearl of its booze and ended up handling the crimson poors because drunk. Did few jobs for an assassin, then killed someone named majorine by accident.. oops. It was all good though. I fled the city just in case and become warden commander ultimately reuniting with my morgypoo and going on a vacation into the crossroads.

Da2: Hawke was a mage who wished he could be as great my warden, he romanced some priate booty and dealt with alot of shite because of her but eh priate booty, am I right guys? He left a life of organized crime, killed some ancient shite, helped ancient shite, sided with mages being a mage himself. Basically he modeled himself after his idol(my warden) and did okay I guess.

Inquisition: Elf mage who sided with mages, loved by all, warden super fanboy, drank some really strong booze and now hears whispers(constantly.. crap.), made nightingale divine, romacned Cassandra who loved my inqusi-butt and ended up helping erry one and solving all the puzzles, left no stone unturned what so ever, maxed out his abilities, danced with celebrities, saved an empress, exiled a few people, killed a few more people, judged everyone and made a box of human sludge tour around orlais and ferelden. Got super famous for that, put a few platinum albums out then realized I had to stop coryphish. Killed every dragon available, needed sheets so yeah they had to go. Became an avaar legend named first thaw McGee, got mad avaar till. Went to a party then realized it was an intervention by people who feared me and wanted to control or disband my awesome army. Told them to stfu and allied with my lovely nightingale divine while promising solas I'd show him how to build a snow man so he won't kill us all.

So I kinda got lazy with the details but I spent over 900 hour at least with each game which is roughly 37 days on the first walkthrough of each game with all games. I literally left no stone unturned so I could find the best world state for me. Which turned out to be this current one. Now having finished all the games and needing to wait for da4 and andromeda. I feel so empty inside... y u do dis to me bioware?

For me it's a combination of what's fun and what story I like best. DA2 was the only one where it met those criteria and was my first playthrough; usually it takes me a little while to get into the swing of things and find my golden playthrough.

My canon Warden is a Dwarf Commoner who (usually) ends up single or with Leliana, even though I prefer not having my protagonist end up Forever Alone and Leliana is not my type by a long shot. So, "my" fun takes a back seat to "his" story, if that makes any sense. That's not to say that I don't have any fun, but it's focused more on the fact that I get to play a casteless dwarf from Orzammar - I love playing the scruffy little underdog, I like redemption stories, I like proving elitist arseholes wrong, etc. And when compared to the next two games, I like that I 'started' the series with such a unique perspective. You can't play as someone who grew up in Dust Town in DA2 or even DAI. My DC had never seen the surface, had no ingrained racism towards elves (just thought most surfacers were peculiar), didn't have a strong opinion on mages or Templars... he just wanted to kill darkspawn and make sure his family was taken care of.

Anyway. tl; dr The point of that wall of text was to say that I like that the first installment of my personal canon has nothing to do with mages, Templars, elves, the Chantry, etc. It's just a dude kicking darkspawn booty, which is kind of the point as far as Grey Wardens are concerned.

Like I said, with DA2 everything fell into place. My first character was a snarky male mage who rivalmanced Fenris, sided with the mages but was no revolutionary - he just wanted to live his life. Carver became a Grey Warden, Isabela came back with the Tome... basically, it was shiny. Fun, first, and most interesting (for me).

DAI is the one where fun wins out. Story-wise, I prefer a dwarf Inquisitor. The idea of the setting's least magical race falling out of the Fade, fighting an ancient magister, and learning to cope with their horrifying glowing hand does things to me. I think it's especially badass and ominous in Trespasser for a dwarf Inquisitor to stab that map of Tevinter because of their historic relationship. But from a fun perspective, my canon is a qunari mage, because my enjoyment of Sera's romance wins out over even my love of dwarves. Which is not to say I couldn't romance her as a dwarf buuut I like Cadash with Blackwall for, you guessed it, story reasons.

So, um. I guess the point of all that was to say I try to strike a balance between the story I want to tell and what I actually like.

I think all my inquisitor's are cannon since each has a unique world state all there own. But my favorite is one I never would have guessed and that is Serena Cadash. I feel in love with that dwarf and care for her more than any others.

Female Amell - Well, I was writing a Fic about her.. So there's that, I guess. She's very morally good, did blah blah, saved Ferelden and took the DA to save both herself and Alistair. (Sorry to be sounding disinterested in my own character; I was playing KOTOR while also playing a Light Side Jedi Revan, who's the exact same as all my Cousland. Lol, I don't like making people who do bad choices, even though my Male Cousland was my really 'I-don't-care-lets-do-this-thing!' Type of guy...)

It's usually a compromise between "most fun" and "flows best as a story". The best example is DAO: I feel that a Cousland makes the most sense story-wise, as they have the most tie-ins with the main plot, but I don't like playing a human if I can help it, so my Mahariel is my canon (and also my first). It helps that it's the only origin that has firsthand contact with the Blight and quite literally has no other choice but to join the Wardens if they want to live. She's a dual-wielding Spirit Warrior, romances Zevran and accepts the Dark Ritual. Hardened Alistair rules alone, Leliana stays softened, Bhelen is king, Circle mages saved, Architect dead.

My first DA2 playthrough was a diplomatic rogue, because I enjoy dual-wielding, but I feel that a mage makes most sense story-wise (also, Carver <3) and that humour is the only way to deal with all the BS the game comes up with, so my canon is a sarcastic mage Hawke. She friendmances Anders and stands by him and the mages, even if she would've far preferred a less 'splodey outcome (and I headcanon that she plans to take him to Rivain or the Avvar to try to kick Vengeance out once things calm down). Carver is a Warden, Isabela finds her conscience, Merrill's clan lives, but she's the only one who is rivalled. Actually, I wouldn't have minded rivalling Fenris, Isabela and Sebastian, but the system's not flexible enough for that. As in, Hawke supports mages, but not slavery or blood magic, so Fenris' approval wins out. She doesn't like Sebastian or his endless waffling, but she's not power-hungry, so Sebastian's approval wins out. She doesn't appreciate selfishness, but does approve of finding your own path in life, so Isabela's approval wins out.

As others have already said, DAI also makes the most sense as an elven mage to me, so my mage Lavellan is my canon (and also my first). She's a KE, as befits an elven leader, and got her heart broken by Solas. Allied with the mages, pardoned the Wardens, reconciled Celene and Briala to help elves out, made a softened Leliana Divine and disbanded the Inquisition, both because she genuinely felt its job was done (heck, I would've disbanded it earlier if the game had let me!) and because she feels it gives her a more stable base to counteract Solas' plans. Rainier has been pardoned, Hawke is alive, Cullen is clean, Bull is Tal-Vashoth and Cole is human (because, after discussing with Hawke, Lavellan is fully aware of the dangers of a spirit remaining in the mortal world with a spirit's outlook).

My canon Warden was a surly Dwarf Commoner Rogue who just wanted to do something with his life instead of withering away in Dust Town.

My canon Hawke was a sarcastic Warrior who romanced Isabella and wanted to make the world a safer place for his little sister.

My canon Inquisitor was a scholarly Human Mage who wanted to bring order to the world but also sought to try to understand what it truly was.

My canon Hawke and Inquisitor also happened to be my first playthroughs, while my canon Warden was my second (first was a human Arcane Warrior). Overall,I feel like each of my protagonists embodied the game from which they came pretty well.
