Considering what occurred in Asunder, the templars could have just stopped the war but no, they fought and killed mages. I don't really have much sympathy for them after reading the book. As far as I'm concerned, every reasonable templar already left the Order by the time of Inquisition. Thus, I have no problem letting the Templar Order get wiped out and permanently disbanded.
Also, the corrupt Templar leadership pretty much confirmed every negative thing I ever thought about the Templars. No way I would ever help them after seeing how idiotic the leadership was. The mages were desperate. The Templars had no go reason to be morons. What logical reason could the templar leadership have for siding with demons and magisters? That says more about the Templars than I ever could say.
Desperation doesn't justify betraying and attacking an ally that gave you shelter. Fiona and the leaders of the Mage rebellion bite the hand that fed them when they seized Redcliffe and forced the Guerrins into exile. And they do this out of fear for a Templar attack that never materializes. They betrayed people who offered them shelter for no reason other than paranoia, and ironically in so doing justify the fear many of the common people have for mages. To then top it all off they ally with the Venatori of their own free will.
The Templars are just as responsible for the death and destruction of the mage rebellion as the mages, but their rejection of Chantry authority is a much less heinous act than the mage betrayal of Redcliffe. And the rank & file don't ally with the Venatori of their own free will, they are duped into drinking Red Lyrium.
In short..both sides are bad, but the mages are worse.
