Okay, I realize that SOME of this is a result of my insistence on navigating the map by drawing a straight line between points A and B and then following it regardless of whatever obstacles are in the way, but it's still terribad when I'm trotting along an otherwise flat stretch of ground and I suddenly hear "OW!" followed by "GLUG" and realize that one of my followers--without any input from me whatsoever--just decided to dive into a ditch, almost die, and use one of my precious, precious potions.

If I jump off a cliff under my own recognizance, fine, I'll take the falling damage.  Having the FOLLOWERS do this completely outside of my input is madness.  I don't care about you "fixing" the pathfinding.  Just make them immune to falling damage when they're not selected.  PROBLEM SOLVED.

I would be in favor of removing it altogether.

I've lost count of how many times I entered battle because some lousy Fennec decided to fall off something.

I stipulate that being able to intentionally fling myself bodily off anything without ever getting hurt would be seriously bizarre to me, so even though I tend to DO this a fair bit (particularly at Skyhold, I'm the Amazing Flying Inquisitor), the falling damage just makes sense to me.  What doesn't make sense to me is that the followers are dumb enough to do it themselves instead of running the long way around (and also that they somehow manage to find lethally-high rocks in entirely flat terrain).

They should still take damage if knocked off something in battle, though.  And what if the player jumps of something then switches characters before they land?

Yes, when Cass and Solas are behind me, stubbing their toes on little rocks, I do wish they'd stop losing half their health. It sounds like a battle is going on behind me but when I turn around, they just look at me, as if nothing happened.  :P
