I made Duncan conscript me on my Dalish Elf begging the clan not to abandon me and Duncan said he would drag me kicking and screaming to Ostagar if he had to.  So why do I go willingly all of a sudden?  Where is the dragging part?  I am sure along the way to Ostagar there would have been a chance to try and escape from Duncan.

Would have been a fun alternate start if they showed Duncan dealing with a pissed off elf who he had to force to come instead of my elf just walking willingly into Ostagar.

Duncan has other Wardens and other potential Wardens. Why would be bother if you disincentivized it so strongly?

A protagonist of every background has the option of saying they don't want to join, not just the Dalish elf. And in every single one of them, they wind up changing their minds and coming willingly. You can headcanon that your Dalish kicked, screamed, and tried to escape on the way to Ostagar (since it's kept blank) but then got with the program by the time you arrived. What we're shown on screen though is dozens of writers and animators with limited budgets who don't have time, resources, or desire to waste it showing the protagonist throwing a screaming hissy fit like a child resisting going to the dentist.

To paraphrase that dad from Monty Python: You're joining the Grey Wardens, so you'd better get used to the idea.

I thought Duncan would have to drag my Cousland away, since he made the motion to attempt that before she willingly ran at the last moment. I agree that your idea would have been funny though!

Come to think of it, this was exactly my canon Warden's reaction when Duncan tried to recruit him from the Circle Tower.  He knew he might be facing death if he stayed, but it had been his home since he was six and Irving was like a second father to him.  It didn't feel right to him that he should be able to walk away from punishment.

That would have been rather hilarious, but I doubt they'd waste resources on something that could be easily headcanoned.

If it means getting a chance to hit Duncan I'm all up for the idea. Wish there was a mod to make that happen :D

All of my wardens (apart from my dwarves and that's because they don't have another choice) refused to join the Grey Wardens. They really should have added something like that in since they gave you the option to refuse Duncan outright and make it clear to him that you do not wish to join the Grey Wardens.

Even with the conscription - I would have thought they would have still fought them. Conscription meant you were forced into it - it doesn't mean you should follow Duncan like you accepted it.

And the chance to hit Duncan? I'll take it!

My mage set Duncan's beard on fire because she did not want to come. Unfortunately she couldn't cast enough fireballs to set that bush ablaze before she was attacked with a sudden lifting of his eyebrow. Short of the story is.. that the beard won.
