I am so shocked. Not like EA does this all the time or anything.

I just found out a couple of minutes ago and I'm pretty bummed out. The brand will continue.. I just pray that they never get their hands on Obsidian Entertainment.

Back in the day I never really understood the bad rap that EA used to get but with the internet being prevalent to receive info it's just like, "Damn, these dudes seem really terrible."

considering Maxis's track record they are a couple years too late

They are either expert in their ability to kill successful developers, or they are incompetent at acquiring developers who have long term staying power. One of the two has to be true.

They released no good successor to Sim City 4 and now EA kills the whole thing.
I suppose I have to play Cities XL 2012 the meh.

Considering the most recent SimCity game, I'd say this studio was dead for a while.
Sucks for the people who are out of a job because of it, though.

Clickbait.
EA did not shut down Maxis. They shut down a specific studio of Maxis.
"Maxis continues to support and develop new experiences for current Sims and SimCity players, while expanding our franchises to new platforms and developing new cross-platform IP."
Another statement of theirs--
"All employees impacted by the changes today will be given opportunities to explore other positions within the Maxis studios and throughout EA."
Whether one believes them or not is one's prerogative, but from the looks of it it's not merely firing people (granted, it may involve moving or somesuch which is bad, but it's not the same as being out of a job).
As an aside, Riven, I'm glad to see you're using your website now.

It would really suck if you had to move houses just so you could keep your job.

title is pretty much a lie. Maxis still have Studios so they have not been "killed", they just shut down one of those studios.
Maxis is far from dead.

Unfortunately, most people will gloss over your correct analysis of the situation and continue to jump on the EA hate bandwagon.

You know what sucks?
Quitting your job because you found a better one, selling your house, buying a new house, having your wife quit her job so she can go along with the move, get settled in to the new house, and then finding out that the job offer you accepted was rescinded.

That's "f*ck this sh*t I'm moving the Mars" material there.

Guilty as charged I suppose. My original title was "EA kills Sim City", but it just seemed redundant.
That said, the studio that was closed was the same one that had been designing Sim City for all those years. So, it is kind of a big deal. Anyways, thanks for visiting the blog. The new format is working much better. ![]()

Maxis is far from dead.
The thing is that the studio that was closed was responsible for Spore, SimCity, and The Sims 4(along with another studio called The Sims Studio who is still working on TS4 content).
Which is every game that Maxis has released in recent history. If Darkspore from 2011 is included, then that's every game they've released in the last decade.
They may not have completely shut down Maxis, but they just shut down the only studio of theirs that was actually making games.

The question that must be asked is if those people were fired (and I'll point out, for the sake of argument, that each of the games you mentioned except possibly Darkspore, is not regarded highly at all). Irrational Studios was closed down, but Levine points out in his letter that "Other Take-Two studios will be on hand to discuss opportunities within the company" for the employees to be laid off.
I have little doubt that something similar is being done here.

Well the way it's worded suggests that one of two things will happen:
1. The employees from that studio will be moved to other Maxis studios and will continue working as normal, from just another location.
2. The employees will be scattered all throughout EA studios that aren't Maxis.
If #2 happens, as I assume the other studios lack the resources to develop games on their own then future games would just be another developer having Maxis' name slapped on their product(assuming the brand name still carries weight).
In either case, the ones who don't take the "other opportunities" within EA will be laid off because their position no longer exists.
Their recent games haven't been well received true, which is why earlier in the thread I said "I'd say this studio was dead for a while". They really haven't been making very good games lately =P
Not counting Darkspore, I think their last well received game was The Sims 2(3 was apparently developed by sub-studio called The Sims Studio) in 2004.

Why are there only two options? Why not a third?
Maxis employees are moved to other Maxis studios as well as being moved to other EA studios.
