Well Mass Effect didn't come out for 2 years after the Xbox 360 was released. The same timeframe for this generation would put it at being released at the end of this year.
Oblivion looked really nice, and brought a lot of new people into the franchise but a lot of existing fans felt it was a pretty big step backwards from Morrowind in just about everything except graphics.
I'm not exactly certain what it is you're looking for from next gen games compared to last gen. A jump in graphics that's mind blowing is less and less likely to happen because we need exponentially better hardware to get the same jumps.
And then you ask yourself, what's the point? What was the point of increasing the expense because you're developing on new hardware and your games are gonna take even longer to make with even bigger budgets but you can't even take advantage of it to a meaningful extent?
The point is to get a large guaranteed amount of money (for Sony and Microsoft). If you come out with a new console and then the games start being developed for only them, then video gamers will be forced to buy them (or a gaming PC) if they want to continue to play the current games.
I fully agree with your post I've quoted and the one you made above it addressing me. I've asked myself over and over what was the point, how do us video game players benefit from these new consoles? I'll admit that I'm biased, I loved the 360's interface and I absolutely hate both the Playstation 4's and Xbox One's, it was just so easy to find everything on the 360.
While I'm not certain, I think the reason (at least part of it) that they have such big budgets for everything is inflated egos. I realize this claim might sound childish, but I stand by it after having read about a lot the internal workings of video game companies. People up top in some portions of that industry are so petty. I also like to think that they are able to go before their investors and say that "We've got X amount of money into this game, since we've got so much invested into it, it has to be good!" I think that some people see large numbers and immediately think of success, even if the numbers don't add up positively. I don't know though.
It would be a lot better if they scaled back on budgets, maybe by toning down graphics a bit and focusing more on gameplay? It's a tricky situation because video games mean different things to different people, but I think that you and I are probably alike (correct me if I am wrong here, I'm not trying to speak for you
) in the thought process that graphics don't necessarily make a video game. I mean, they should be good, but they don't have to be movie good for me to enjoy a game. Then again, how good the graphics need to be should also depend on the type of game and art style the developers are using. Graphics just seem to be the big focus right now: Ryse, The Order 1886, Watchdogs (people got hung up on it and bashed the game for it) and that troubles me because I think that gameplay and re-playability should be the focus.
This console gen is a turd

It's worth noting that Watchdogs got bashed for graphics because their E3 demo looked significantly better than what the game did at launch. They massively toned it down, even for the PC version.
I think that people are okay with you focusing on gameplay and re-playability. Just don't show this amazing looking demo and then go "oops sorry, the final game wont look anywhere near as good as that" and people wont flip over it.
Ryse and The Order are both tech demos(even if one is over a year late), so their entire purpose is kind of a "Hey look what we can do with this fancy new hardware!".
Once Bethesda gets around to releasing Fallout 4 all will be well in the world again.
You could probably argue home console games development was stalling in the late PS2/early PS3 era... it's just now the effects of all kinds of trends are coming full force in 2014/15.

Damn you're young. What are you? Like 15? Good old high school days.
I'm 18, finished High School nearly a year ago.
King Kong came out in '05 dude.
It's 2015.

Yeah, players even found a way to patch the graphics back in at higher quality via the games assets on the PC version and it caused little to no performance issues. I just felt that it was worth noting because most of the negative response to the game that I noted was graphics based, even though the gameplay was quite sound (in my opinion, at least). I get that they showed one thing and released another basically, but it's just felt like it helped show how much of an emphasis that some people put on graphics.
I somewhat disagree with Ryse being a tech demo though, I remember it originally was going to be released for the 360, but they decided to make it exclusively for the Xbox One instead. Graphics and relevance are the only reasons I can grasp for the switch between the two consoles.
The Order I don't know enough about, but I've seen its graphics and read complaints about it being incredibly linear and playing almost like a movie.
One thing that really makes me feel like the main focus has shifted to graphics is all of these "HD Remakes" of games that aren't even 5 years old (I'll give GTA V a pass because they added in first person and weren't able to do that with the 360 and PS3).
Oh yes! Fallout 4 shall set us all free and will be a true sign that the Current Gen has picked up and is going in at full throttle ![]()

I know when it came out. I was joking about your age. I was pretty passable in math despite hating it.

I'm looking for a game that makes my jaw drop like Oblivion and Mass Effect did when I first played them. Without that, what's the point of a new console generation? After nearly a decade of the old generation, I expected a whole lot better from these new consoles. They seem more like just an upgrade to the existing consoles instead of a leap forward.
The PC manufacturers are going to overtake the console market in a few years. Then things will start looking up.
I think we're in for a bit more waiting for a true next-gen step up into a new frontier for gaming.
I get the feeling that VR is whats next. From motion control to VR, and if VR comes along, hopefully binaural audio.
VR+Binaural audio as a heavy push is down the line I'm sure. Right now, gaming is still in its early-gen state where the true great games have yet to come out.
Besides, a lot of games that come out these days are sequels. We need new original IPs for the One, 4, and U.
We'll get them in time. For now, gotta stick it out.
I'll say this, if the consoles one day will allow me to wear a VR headset while still using a controller to control what I'm playing and give me binaural audio for the experience, that'd be really interesting. I'd love to see what they could do with it.
It'd also be awesome if it was still possible to stream that for others to watch. They'd literally be seeing your perspective in-game.
HAH!

What made them so much more impressive than those developer's previous gen efforts like Morrowind and Kotor?

The fact that both were a true generational leap forward in technology and game design.

What exactly made those games jaw dropping, though? I'm looking for specific things rather than "it was a big leap forward".
You're being rather ambiguous in what made them such amazing games, so it's kind of hard to get a sense as to why you think this generation hasn't been amazing.
I think just more time is needed. Some good games coming out this year/2016.
By "leap forward" are we referring to technologically, or are we referring to just, "the vibe we get from a great game"?
Cause one means we're probably talking about things like the VR and the binaural audio I referred to earlier, the other means we're probably talking about new IPs that blow us away.
Neither has really happened yet. Not to the level we are hoping for, anyway.

Do I really have to make a list of improvements that happened between games?
