Is soloing platinum really that much harder than gold?

Giant, White and Glacier certainly work that way. I think my favorites are Reactor and Goddess, though the furthest I go is about wave 7 when I just get tired of the constant kiting raped by all the enemies. At that point, it's been about 30-40 minutes and I just can't deal with survive it anymore.

FTFY...  :whistle:

Don't feel too bad. That's most good players limits with non-OP setups, mine included. The problem in my experience was that the last four waves could take almost as long as the first six. After playing 30+ minutes of platinum, I would usually start to lose concentration and that's when errors would start to creep into my game. And it only takes one mistake in the wrong place and you're gonna have to use a bunch of med gels and ops packs or even worse, you'll get synced. But they were usually MY mistakes and if I ever took ME3 seriously, I know I could have easily ironed out those mistakes. But people shouldn't always blame boredom or BS for not getting solos done because despite the amount of BS platinum throws at you, probability shows that if you're good enough, you'll eventually get it done.

I'm good enough. I was doing Reaper/Goddess as Drellguard and got to wave 7 with 4 ops packs, 4 medigels and 5 missiles. Went halfway through that wave, and felt the urge to use the bathroom. This combined with me being tired of kiting banshees caused me to quit without even being dropped by anything. I just got tired of it. It was so laborious.

So I quit, used the restroom, and played Skyrim and slew dragons instead. Much more fun that way.

To be honest, most things are more fun than plat solos. I swear getting one done half killed the game for me... And my subsequent attempts...  :sick:

Edit: Also, I didn't mean to imply you weren't good enough btw. I just see the, "platinum solos are too boring to do" excuse when they haven't done one way too often and it kind of makes me wonder why people lie to themselves...

That's the truth of it, for me at least. I play games to have fun, not as work. There is no fun in plat solos. Not having a margin for error doesn't necessarily make the game hard. Going back to Skyrim as an example. I used to run a mod setup that made archers OHK machines. So I had to use Become Ethereal and use poisons of paralysis and summoned dremoras to defeat them. There was no margin for error--if I slipped up, by DB would die. But it was easy to avoid being hit, so there was never any drama.

In essence, that is how plat solos feel to me. If you play in the most dull, protracted ways imaginable, you'll probably succeed. There is a winning formula and it's fairly easy to stick to, if you don't get tired of doing it first. But actually doing it is another matter altogether. It's just dreadful.

That's exactly how I feel. Especially when I read things like:

'There is a winning formula and it's fairly easy to stick to';

'I could just take a TGI, AIU or similar OP kit and use their ridiculous abilities, but that's kind of a problem, because then there's no drama whatsoever';

'I'm more or less standing in a couple of places, using the soft cover, rinsing and repeating, for over an hour';

'If you play in the most dull, protracted ways imaginable, you'll probably succeed';

'if I fail, it's through a fluke';

all from someone who's never actually got past wave 7 of a platinum solo.

Maybe I'm just bad, but I don't think I've ever completed a single solo without some kind of "drama," even with the easiest kits.

This is actually another reason I avoid solo's. You get better at the game much faster. Get too good with any game, and no more reason to keep playing.

Soloing the odd waves in this game when everyone drops gives everyone enough insight into soloing. It's how I learned to solo before soloing. So no, I don't agree with you.

Well, I didn't actually ask you anything and your answer has nothing to do with my post so I guess you quoted the wrong one.

It's called an opinion. Not everybody has to agree. I'm fine with yours, just my own personal experience says otherwise (was able to solo Gold first attempt, and Plat second attempt based on just carrying & clutching pug matches. Playing with the worst is how I learned the art of soloing instead of always hiding behind great players & OP weaponry/consumables). So I'm not just talking nonsense.

Nor did I mean to rub you the wrong way (which is never my intention).

Again, what does that have to do with the post of mine that you quoted? What exactly is it you're disagreeing with? And you're the first one to mention anything about 'hiding behind great players & OP weaponry/consumables', what are you getting at?

Folks can know good enough if soloing if for them or not even without having once done it due to clutching enough alone in pug matches. You said folks that never soloed and complain about soloing being boring & bad are wrong or jerks. This is where I don't agree with you. I think they have a good enough of an idea if it's for them or not, just like myself. As soloing has never been my cup of tea for some time now and it so far looks like that won't change for some time now.

I criticised DaftArbiter because he essentially wrote 'I'm awesome, I would have done lots of plat solos but they're just too easy and boring and the only time I've ever failed an attempt is because of bad luck'.

As for me claiming people who 'complain about soloing being boring & bad are wrong or jerks', maybe you could point out where I wrote anything like that? Because it seems you're disagreeing with something I've never claimed.

Think of gold wv11 with multiple fractions as the 11 waves of platinum.

I don't understand your logic in any of this. First, you're taking umbrage with someone putting words in your mouth, when you've done the exact same thing to me? Second, it's my opinion, and you don't need to agree with it. But don't call me out for having an opinion.

I never said they were too easy. But they are definitely too boring for me to do. I don't have the patience to play such a long game with such a small margin for error (where because I refuse to use exploits like glitch-hacking and pizza running, absolutely raises the chances of a wipe). I know I can do it, but it feels more like work and a crapshoot than anything else. I don't like when games are crapshoots and I don't like when they're work, either.

If it looks pretentious that I'm making these complaints about Plat solos, then I'll do one. I expect apologies and/or cookies when I do this.

Yes, it is your opinion.............about something you've never actually done.

And the difference is, Sinful wrote that I claimed people like you are 'wrong' or 'jerks' about this topic, which is untrue. Whereas, I didn't put words in your mouth about plat solos being easy, see below. I wonder how many people read those posts and didn't come to the conclusion that you think plat solos are easy?

What's really hard about it is that it's boring, and if I fail, it's through a fluke

I don't see why it would be hard to understand what I am saying, if you read it carefully first.

I said the formula is easy to stick to, not that doing a plat solo is easy. If doing a total solo were easy, that'd be another thing, but I never said that. I don't think it's easy, because the process of kiting, looking over my shoulder, etc. is a cycle of near perpetuity for 30-60 minutes depending on the setup. All it takes is one bad objective and all that dreadful monotony is for nothing. A hack in the Reactor core on wave 10, a wave 10 escort straight through the avenue on FB Ghost, and so forth. Or getting shot by a ragdolled Hunter, or grabbed by a dematerialized Banshee who flew through a wall. No, I'm not going to sit through that.

But there are strategies that work, and if you have the patience for it, you can do it (and I'm sure that you, quite literally, can do it), because the video evidence of this is abundant, and I did pretty well for myself running around with a wraith and a LOLcolyte, chucking grenades and creating fire explosions before the combination of a needed bathroom break and boredom caused me to quit.

I personally don't have the patience. I get nothing for completing a plat solo outside of brownie points and the attached credits, but I don't really care. Playing a team game and rezzing pugs and running back and forth across the map, clutching rounds here and there is much more exciting, much quicker, and much more fun. I play for fun. In my experience, platinum solos aren't fun. They're the video game equivalent of taking an SAT. So much concentration for so long, it's exhausting. Challenging in its own way, of course, but so devoid of true mental stimulation that the soul-crushing monotony makes it an agonizing task.

I do understand what you mean because, unlike Sinful Force, you can write coherently and don't seem to be stupid. But you only explained one of your posts. Surely you can understand how people will get the impression you think plat solos are easy when you write 'I could just take a TGI, AIU or similar OP kit and use their ridiculous abilities, but that's kind of a problem, because then there's no drama whatsoever', 'I'm more or less standing in a couple of places, using the soft cover, rinsing and repeating, for over an hour' and especially 'if I fail, it's through a fluke'.

That's fair enough. I can see what you mean. No one person ever is the only person with a certain opinion, so if that's how you took it, it's fair to assume that others who saw that got the same impression.

Yikes. I'll say this:

I played a platinum Reapers game a long time ago, back when SilentStep was still playing. Everyone died on wave 9, and I clutched it. While it gave me confidence that I could solo platinum, I didn't actually complete a platinum solo until almost a year later.

I can't agree with the opinion that being able to clutch a wave here or there means that you know how to solo. Killing 8 enemies in a random wave is nothing like depleting 9 waves worth of enemies, 3 objective waves and the remaining enemies after that all while staying alive. The wave compositions are different, so your strategy will probably change depending on the wave you're facing, and that depends also on the map and faction you're facing. Clutching the odd wave on occasion can't give you that experience.
