Toolset crash from sound files

I found a couple of sound sets whose exported NWN sound files cause the toolset to crash when I click on the Play button in the menu:

  • Giant_Fire_Female => c_x0gntfirf
  • Wyrmling => c_x0drgpse

However, the individual wav files play just fine in the Windows media player. Does anybody know what might be causing the crash? I don't think it is the file names or the type because  Giant_FrostFemale (c_x0gntfrsf), which has the same set as c_x0gntfirf, works just fine.

 

P.S. I found three rows in the soundset.2da file that are malformed: 467 (Male_Seasoned), 569 (Black Dragon), and 570 (Herald Zehir).

Does anybody recall if there is a fix for the problem of certain existing sound sets not playing for the Play button in the Sound Set menu but working in the game? I know it's not the wav files because I tried substituting a working set for a non-working set, and that pick still didn't work.

Maybe they're in stereo and the working ones in mono? Or their duration is longer and that creates a conflict? Another possibility is they're not at 44.1 kHz?
As you can guess, I'm just throwing ideas...

not sure if that addresses real issues or what, personally i gave up on NwN2 having robust sound-support a long time ago. But I do have an altered version of the above  installed ... a lot of merging to do. See also:

ps. Giant_Frost_Female as well as Giant_Fire_Female can't find soundfiles, but didn't crash my TS. Some others i checked defaulted down to #0_assimar set.

pps. I was looking through things with both PowerBar's browser and the stock SoundSet plugin -- plenty of anomalies but neither crashed, Rj
i suspect that 47' is onto something suggesting that, if a file has a spurious sound-format, t'would cause CTD.

Thanks. Well those cover most if not all of the NWN full voice sets, but there are also a boat load of creature sounds and partial NPC sounds sets that apparently weren't ported.

 

The Giant_Fire_Female only crashed the toolset after I substituted in the sound files from NWN. For now I'm going to put the crashing sound sets in a separate hak labelled unsafe.

 

A problem with the file length or frequency wouldn't explain why the voice set didn't work when I performed the rename substitution of a working set. I thought perhaps it was a naming issue, but a new name didn't help. I couldn't find any anomalies in the SSF file.

 

I'll try the menu fix to see if that helps.

Most of the sound sets that the above is renaming (to prefix zz#) actually do exist in NWN and I have been able to get a large number of them to play.

 

I was able to resample the sound sets that were crashing the toolset, and they are no longer crashing. They don't play either, but so it goes...

Did you try perhaps creating a brand new .SSF from scratch for (one of) those that won't play? ( might be what's needed )

No I didn't; I just did a line-by-line check of the entries and tried playing the sound files. But yes, that could be worth a try.

 

Ed.: Okay, I gave it a try on one of the entries... and it worked! Thanks for the suggestion; I'll start working on an addition.

 

Ed2.: While working on the SSF fixes, I'm finding a few dragon NPC sound sets that are incomplete, so I'm going to update that as well.
