During World War 1 and 2, Germany had a large aerial fleet of zeppelins which was a large part of their war effort for transportation, scouting and cargo. These ships ran on helium, which quickly drove up international demand.
In an attempt to cripple the German armada, the U.S. began purchasing in HUGE quantities all of the world's helium supply and hoarded it, accounting for a majority of the world's supply. Once the war was over, the government had crazy amounts of helium and nothing to do with it.
So they began selling it for dirt cheap. Since the applications of helium were rather limited, their supply still sits at 30% of the supply on the planet. Now, almost a century later, the government has decided to move out of the helium market. It has stores of it that will do absolutely nothing, but there is no market to mine any more helium, since the need to do so has been practically non-existent since the 40's.
So helium and helium-isotopes are experiencing a spike in demand, but it's only because the government isn't giving it away for practically free anymore. Because the Nazis. the_more_you_know_by_stathisnhx-d33639v.

Thanks for clearing that up and replying with a serious answer instead of insulting me. ;)

So helium and helium-isotopes are experiencing a spike in demand, but it's only because the government isn't giving it away for practically free anymore. Because the Nazis.

It also means that sadly, the lack of any helium lead many Zeppelins being forced to rely on hydrogen instead, leading to the Hindenburg disaster and subsequent backlash against them, turning the world to turn to the far more environmentally unfriendly means of air travel such as aeroplanes.

I mean, yeah it worked to prevent any kind of dirigible warefare and it killed the market before WW2 even started, but it also meant we never got any cool Watchmen, Fringe or Doctor Who-style alternate universes where everyone has Zeppelins, and that's not cool, guys!

(Also the US began stockpiling in 25, way before the Nazi's took power, so it's less to do with them and more the US correctly deducing that Germany was inevitably going to build more of the things)

Because knowing is half the battle... (the other half involves hoarding helium)

Yeah, they should just name it MacGuffinium and be done with it? I'd give those films far more props for the lampshade hanging!

Amen, Harry Plinkett covered that in his really short review of Avatar.

But for real, if Biometal was real, we would be racing the reds to the Moon, Mars, Venus, and so on.

I concur.

To be honest, when the Greeks first proposed the idea of a democratic government, they worried that it would be run by idiots, by virtue of the fact that idiots outnumber intelligent people. Ergo, a "mob rule," as they described it, was bound to run the risk of making very dumb decisions by people who weren't smart enough to know better.

Do explain.........

How is mass surveillance of everyone not undemocratic?

The EU and other nations have all struck down data retention. This is not a democratic idea.

...

Democracy is a form of government where we vote in our representatives into a form of government. As long as we vote in our members it's democratic.

You have democracy and freedom mixed up. They are rarely the same.

http://dictionary.re...rowse/democracy

We invest the power into those people by majority vote.

Though I'm sure Fast Jimmy will provide a better explanation then I could.

Sure it is.

If everyone votes to do it (or votes to put people in charge who decide to do it), then it is by its very nature democratic. Maybe also authoritarian, but if the masses elect it to happen (or do not vote out those who make such changes), then it is still very democratic.
