So, it is basically what the tittle says. I really do not get why she is not a lot more dark.
The book even has some references to it, from Celene finding it exotic to saying that maybe Briala is ashamed of her dark skin.
and
Could you guys fix the canon skin color for Briala in game and in the keep?

I agree with this. They did such an excellent job with Celene. They even got the little details of the mask right to the point I was able to tell it was her in some concept art. Both Gaspard and Michel match their book depiction really closely. It seems odd that they didn't follow the book as directly with Briala. This is one of those little lore things that could probably be remedied with a patch, and it would be good to see. ![]()

Overall they are more close to their book-self than Briala, I mean none of them are dark in game. So the change with Briala to me is an odd one, especially about a physical characteristic that has a lot of references in The Masked Empire.

I hear you. I'm used to appearance changes going from the EU to the game (sometimes, that's the nature of game engines,) but that was mentioned a few times by Celene when she was thinking about Briala. Unlike previous engines for DA, Frostbite renders darker skin quite well, so I have no clue why this change happened.

I am going with, "the people they did her, did not read the book" because being a deliberately whitewashing makes no sense here, when it comes to bioware and their quite diverse cast. I just hope they can fix this with a future patch but not holding my breath.

Agreed and agreed. That's what I figured as well. I don't think it'll get patched either, but I figured I'd show support. ![]()

The book mentions her skin color, her big dark eyes, and her brown hair multiple times. I wouldn't have recognized her in the game if they didnt tell us that's who she was...

I doubt they will change anything to match the book since probably 95+% of players (myself included) probably haven't read it. I didn't even know until a month or two ago that any Dragon Age books even existed. They're not exactly highly marketed, and most people (myself included again) tend to shy away from books based on other forms of media, especially video games.

That seems to be pretty much agreed upon. It's just an interesting catch in light of how well they did the rest of the characters. It's a minor lore thing, and what's done is done. I agree that most players haven't read the EU, so it'll probably be left as is. In all honesty, once the modding community is able to work with Patch 5 (they're working their butts off, but this latest patch broke their tools for now,) this would make a great mod suggestion. I'd prefer it to be for all players, but I'm sure the modders can do this for those that can use it. <shrug>
While I'm participating in this thread, I'll be the first to say that I'd rather have the patches focus on fixing the game versus something as overall minor as Briala's skintone. ![]()

Same, when I first saw her I really would not have guessed.
I haven't used the keep in a while, I take it the inquisition part is up and running?
Yup.

I am not holding my breath but it would be nice to see this changed mostly because it got really heavy references in the book.
Well I have to disagree with you when it comes to the books and comics, they bring a lot to the game. You would understand Orlais a lot better if you owned at least the last one, there is a lot of things from the books in DA:I, Cole is one example.

I haven't read the book myself, but if it makes mention of Briala feeling ashamed of her darker skin, is it possible that her in-game appearance is due to her purposefully altering her appearance to appear more high class? I mean, she has to keep up appearances as the "ambassador" and since she no longer has Celene's support, might she have taken extra steps to make herself fit in more with the pampered upper class? Could it even have been to spite Celene's affinity for her darker skin?

Her hair is hard to see, but not unless she got contacts. Her eyes look greyish-blue in most brighter lighting in the game. Plus, it's not like she spent a lot of time out in the sun with being Celene's handmaiden like someone that worked in the fields would. So her skin shouldn't be that much lighter.
I did notice she appeared darker in some screenshots than others, but in bright light she looks rather pale in comparison to novel description. I feel like they got her voice and personality pretty much spot in for her rather brief screentime. So it doesn't bother me too much.

They were Celene toughs and they come out somehow as problematic. I am not the author of the book but it seem he was trying to pass their love affair, as something (on the side of Celene) really close to prejudice, seeing Briala as exotic.
Also that only would made sense if her keep version was more dark.

Well, Patrick Weekes (the man that wrote The Masked Empire for those that don't know) is the head writer now, so hopefully he lurks and reads threads like this. Even the though writers and devs tend to avoid posting, and not that I blame them, I'm pretty certain that they still hang around and read from time to time.

I actually thought she looked pretty dark in my game. She definitely has brown skin. Oddly your screenshot seems a bit lighter. Maybe it's just the lighting. Her eyes are also a strange mix of purple and brown.
Which is quite odd because my game looks just like the OP picture.

My game also looks like the OP's. It was really jarring after reading the novel.

Besides, they should do something with her ears clipping through hat.

(to Evenstar29) If you Google "Briala" and go to Images, you'll see pictures of Briala from different angles and scenes which all have her, in my opinion, looking like she has fairly light skin. There is even one of her next to Celene where their skin tones are nearly the same. The same goes for an image of her picture next to that of Gaspard where they have the same skin tone.
http://i.ytimg.com/v...xresdefault.jpg (Celene & Briala)http://i.ytimg.com/v...xresdefault.jpg (Gaspard & Briala)
In addition, my Inquisitor had a dark skin tone and in the scenes with Briala, there was a contrast between the two.
I agree with the comments above that it is more likely a case of someone not reading the lore related to Briala and not a case of intentional whitewashing.

I understand you feel that way, but comments like yours make me wonder if that's why we got the hair styles we did, because they were worried everyone would complain about clipping issues, for me it doesn't bother me if things clip as long as we get a lot of choices in hairstyles and hats..
I just over look it.

Except Michel and Gaspard are never described in the book beside being "big men" to underline that they are tall and powerful chevalier.
Edit: And Gaspard is said to have a hawkish face.
The only description of Briala skin tone we have in the book is that her skin is "darker" (not brown, just "darker") than Celene, and Celene is ghostly white. So while I did found the Briala too pale when you first meet her, I think it's a lightning issue. While with the modded unmask thing, her skin appears closer to what I imagined:
