Okay, so I'm doing my first ever Mass Effect run and play-through, and I wanted a little bit of feedback before I get into it.

Background: The most recent Bioware game that I've played has been Dragon Age: Origins, and I'm still playing it, but let's just say I have an interest in expanding my narrative in the Multi-verse they're giving us.  ME is currently downloaded & installed through Origin Client and totallly up to date. I'm not planning on doing any major tweaks or modifications, beyond what needs to be done to ensure it runs smoothly & beatifically, i.e. I'm planning to install M.E.U.I.T.M. (the Mass Effect Updated / Improved Textures Mod) by CDAMJC (hope I got that right).  Uncertain at this time of any performance enhancing tweaks or .ini adjustments that I might otherwise need to make, still researching.

I'm planning on running the game on 'Normal' difficulty, just because it is my first ever time, and I want to punch through the game without having the enemies necessarily just die of fright on seeing me.  I initially rejected Soldier out of hand for reasons of "Boring", reconsidered it due to my desire to get the Weapon Bonus Talents, and than re-rejected it as I understand you can get those talents unlocked even with an untrained character.  So, the build I propose as my initial playthrough:

Adept / Bastion (no 'Bonus Talent,' obviously ;) )

Desire to unlock as many Achievements as possible on this first run, even if that means a certain amount of savescumming / reloading fights, and such.

Final Build for the character, Talent wise at level 50, looks like this.

  • 12 in Pistols
  • 5 in Basic Armor
  • 12 in Barrier
  • 7 in Lift
  • 7 in Singularity
  • 6 in Stasis
  • 8 in Throw
  • 7 in Warp
  • 9 in Bastion
  • 1 in Charm (just the Spectre Bonus)
  • 12 in Intimidate (including the Spectre & Renegade bonuses, so 8 discretionary skill points spent)
  • 11 in Spectre Training

* As I'm only able to get to level 50, I believe the math is right on this.  2 Points at level '0,' 3 points per level for levels 1 – 5, 2 for levels 6 – 35, and 1 for levels 36 – 60 50.  So that should be 2 + (3 x 5) + (2 x 30) + (15) = 92 + 2 (Charm & Intimidate, Spectre) + 3 (Renegade / Morality Bonuses).

In regards the talents, please, tell me if you feel there's an adjustment I should make for better achieving my goals (unlocking as many as possible achievements and completing the story line with as many side quests successfully finished).  For example, should I drop pistols down from Max to increase one of the Biotic Powers?

My subsequent playthrough will be as an Engineer, either on Normal or Veteran, with the intent to finish up some other achievements, most notably unlocking ALL of his particular set in Hacking and such.

My canon playthroughs will be on Hardcore & Insanity (Possibly, I don't feel Insanity may be a requirement for me).  I plan on playing a Infiltrator / Operative (Hacking) and a Vanguard / Nemesis (Singularity).

Any an all reactions, feedback, and suggestions are very greatly appreciated, and thank you in advance for welcoming me to this community :)

@themikefest: Thank you!  Still putting everything together, only downloaded the MEUITM tonight, planning on the full work through of it tomorrow.

I haven't played an Adept in more than a year, so I may be a bit rusty -but I still have some remarks (personal preference):

I would max. out either lift or singularity -or both. The reason is that with master lift you can incapacitate even the largest enemies for a good time. As an adept these might give you problems otherwise.

As I almost never use stasis (you can't damage enemies in stasis unless bastion is taken to lvl 12), I usually only put a single point into that skill and spend the rest on lift.

Spectre training would be most useful early on -when you don't have point to spend. Imo 8 points to unlock 'advanced unity' is enough. 11 points will not unlock 'master unity' and the 0.5% stat increases are noticeable only in very few situations.

For pistols: Depending on your playstyle (and pistol used), 8 points might be enough.

Most important: You might not get to level 50 at all in your first playthrough, and you will spend a lot of time as level 30-40 Char.

So I'd advice on prioritizing certain abilities over others.

My pick would be Lift/Singularity, throw (warp is great, but can't stop certain enemies charging towards you), pistols, and barrier.

-Of course these are only suggestions

Just do all the side missions and it should be fine to get to level 50. I had that Level in my first run, and now on my second I still have the last major plot point ahead of me and I'm already level 51.

First time I played Soldier on Casual (just wanted to enjoy the story), now I'm on Hardcore playing an Engineer.

Adept or Sentinel will be my next (Insanity), so I have no experience on that yet, but it seems like a lot of fun :)

Btw for Engineer I didn't develop my weapons very far (I only maxed out my squadmates' weapons, but with lower priority).

I put 3 points in Pistol and 2 (1 would've actually been sufficient) in Assault Rifle. With the weapon upgrades you find in the game it is enough for weapon damage imo. Some upgrades will have bonuses for certain types of enemies, so I made my Assault Rifle useful against one type and my Pistol against the other.

There are a number of side missions on the Citadel that you might not find unless you consult the wiki. I did not find Rebeka and Michael, Helena Blake, or the spacer background side quest, for quite a while. I think I found the Helena Blake side-quest by watching someone else's playthrough.

No that's good.  The reason I'm taking the point spread that I am isn't really for Otimal Badass-ness but more to be sure I can unlock all of the Talents/Powers.  Granted, I'm planning on using Stasis more for keeping my teammates alive, assuming that it's available as a friendly fire kind of thing, and for buying the group time.  I'll also admit I'm split on going Bastion or Nemesis.

I definitely plan on reading the wiki :)  The story and game doesn't get wrecked for me with spoilery stuff, I just want to make sure I have my own playthrough and character that integrates with the design inherent to the game.  One of the reasons it always felt hard to play something other than a human noble in Dragon Age: Origins, they just seemed so inherent to the greater story.  And I'm not a fan of short muscle men with beards.

This game can be a little challenging first time through. I wish there was a respec points option......

A tip:

If you want Liara's Squadmate Achievement, I suggest you save ALL the side-quests you have on the Citadel and don't complete it. Then, get Liara, and complete all of them.

(PS: I meant Liara because as she is the only squadmate you won't get on the Citadel, so many people actually complete those Citadel Side-quests first and then go after her)

If you want to make sure you get to level 50 here's a mission checklist Teryx put together. I found it helpful on my completionist playthrough to make sure I got all the collection assignments, and if you print it there's no switching back and forth from the wiki to the game.
