For me I identify with Zelda as being Yoshiaki Koizumi's brainchild as much as Miyamoto. Miyamoto was always kind of more Mario to me, but obviously Zelda too. It's just that the master sword, dark worlds, etc, all these things were more directly from Koizumi is my understanding.

For those who don't know he got involved with A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, Majora's Mask, and a portion of Wind Waker. Zelda 1, Zelda 2, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, as well as all the handheld Zeldas I don't think he really had a role in at all.

Skyward Sword having a stamina bar, etc, it has kind of a more Mario aesthetic in some ways, it all means I don't know what to think of Zelda now. I hope the next one is good but I'm not really sure what to think since I don't even know how involved Miyamoto is either, so it's a weird time for Zelda is what I'm saying I guess.

You could argue Demon Soul's is actually a truer successor to the spirit of a Link to the Past but I don't really enjoy dying 10 zillion times so eh.. it's a hard series to replace really..

How similar is Legend of Zelda to the Souls series when it comes to their approach to lore? Do they leave much of it mysterious while leaving most of it to be figured out by the players themselves?

How similar is Legend of Zelda to the Souls series when it comes to their approach to lore?

Zelda is generally(but not always)told to-the-point. In the NES version, it's all through the intro. In Link To The Past, It's the Intro with a few dialogue bits. Ocarina of Time tells it through a much larger bit of dialogue and more cinematics. Special Cases like Majoras Mask can leave a lot up to debate. Game Theorists have a done a ton on that title alone, and reading the inspiration for the game was very intriguing.

Souls is fairly minimalistic. It generally does lore through bits of dialogue, item descriptions, and very cryptic bits that I wouldn't catch the first time. To be honest, not a huge fan of item descriptions telling me bits of lore since that's bordering on game logic. I'd prefer something a bit more organic. But yes, there are similarities.

Later Zelda games likely leave things a bit more open, but Souls leaves a lot in the air... until you fall to your death through that air and die.

Hmmm... In some ways, that is how Zelda is nowadays because while the story of the games themselves are told in a straightforward way, the overall lore, the lore that encompasses all the games, is shrouded in a lot of mystery, hence why you have so many Zelda theorists about. But again, yes, if you were to play perhaps Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, you'd know the whole story for those games. Yet piecing the background information of the entire franchise, and that includes the stuff that isn't immediately relevant to the games themselves, is very cryptic.

Yep, that's very true.

The intent of the developers early on was likely more just for adding a backstory that fit the fantasy element. Somewhere along the line, Nintendo caught on and have been developing the game list with an entire timeline in mind, and it definitely adds to the series.

How did people like A Link Between Worlds anyway?

I would say something similar to this Captain Obv. Both are Japanese action games set in a kind of crumbling disastrous kingdom gone south, and ultimately you fight a bunch of wild and crazy demons with generally a minimalistic story approach.

A link to the past is the closest example, Skyward Sword, Twilight Princess, Ocarina, etc, are a great deal different in many respects.

I listen to the 25th Anniversary album all the time. My daughter, who is now ten months old, usually falls asleep to the main theme. My husband bought me some Triforce earrings for my birthday last year and I had a nerdgasm.

Best game in the series for me is definitely A Link To The Past on the SNES.

Nostalgia everywhere!

I wouldn't mind if they brought back the music mechanic from OoT and MM (and to a lesser degree, WW). I always liked the songs you could play on your musical instruments, like the Song of Storms. Here's hoping they bring that back for Zelda U, although I doubt it.

Recently, there was a post made by Nintendo under the guise of the "Happy Mask Salesman" which talked about himself appearing in "a new Zelda game" and a mention of "some new masks."

From the "Happy Mask Salesman":

"My, my...I've certainly been appearing all over these past few days! If this keeps going, maybe it wouldn't be a stretch to expect me to pop up in a new Zelda game too...? Ho, ho, ho... I've got some new masks too, if you'd like to try them on... if I do make an appearance, I'm sure everyone will experience such happiness! Believe in your strengths... Believe... Ho, ho, ho..."

And the next card is...

...the moon. In the Downward Position. Staring Intently at your inevitable Doom.

Seeing him in the new Wii U Zelda would be handy.

It sure would be nice to see the Hero of Time get another game later on. I mean, it's not like he died in Majora's Mask or anything.

I love those timeline-theory videos and I guess so does Nintendo, see Hyrule Historia.

As far as I see it, Hylia had good intentions but her solution was too short sighted for a problem that would span eternitiy and an ever changing world.

I don´t think that any LoZ title will right out explore the possibility of Zelda beeing "evil", but it´s fun to speculate and as the official timeline has shown those speculations might also end up becoming canon.

What do you guys think? Do you think that Zelda U might be the third installment of the Hero of Time saga?

If they ever make a great Zelda like Majora's Mask or Wind Waker again then I'm all ears otherwise, meh.

Don't want to be negative necessarily but no Yoshiaki Koizumi = no Hero of Time Zelda etc IMO. The last game he was fully involved with was Majora's Mask, and then partially on Wind Waker.

After thinking about it for a moment, I suddenly agree that this could be a HoT game, but isn't likely.

Basing this solely on the trailer, and assuming that the garb Link is wearing is just the starter clothes, he seems like quite the badass. I mean, bro was not afraid to flip off his horse and place an arrow in the face of some mechanical monster. This says more to me 'established knight figure' than 'farm boy' or whatever. He's a fighter, or at least is fighting and has been doing so for a while.

But... That could be any Link really. In the past barring Majora's Mask (and as far as I know) Link has always been an average person who became a knight, but that doesn't mean that we couldn't have someone who already is a Knight of Hyrule or whatnot who would then become known as a Hero. It wouldn't fit the standard narrative, but feck it, Skyward Sword told us that at some point people were on giant floating islands, so we can have a Knight Link.

As for the magitekTM arrow, if it is the Hero of Time then he could have moseyed on over from Termina over to a new place. I mean, he was supposedly going somewhere new at the End of OoT and it's not like he stayed there. If he kept on going he could have wound up in any number of places. Somewhere where they have higher tech than Hyrule at the same time. And it's not like that would be too outlandish for an LoZ game.

But... It could still just be a new Link :P

Nintendo once said that there would be "a new Link" in the game, but is that meant to be taken literally? I mean, they mentioned "a new Hyrule" as well, but that doesn't mean that they actually mean that it's literally a "new" Hyrule. Unless we're talking about New Hyrule in the Adult Timeline? Much of the speculation points to it being somewhere between Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess. There's even a bridge that looks like the Bridge of Hylia from TP (or at least something that looks like a bridge).

Damn, sometimes I hate how secretive Nintendo can be with their projects.

So I was wondering. I have never played a Zelda game in my life, but would like to change that. I recently bought the new 3DS and I'm planning to pick up a Zelda game for that one.

My question is, which Zelda game should be recommended to newcomers?

I thought you already made up your mind on getting Majora's Mask.

It's my favorite but Ocarina of Time is pretty much the quintessential "Zelda" IMO while Majora's Mask is a bit of a deviation.

Link Between Worlds is also very good.

You could even get Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks for your new 3ds (I think).

So yeah just buy all five.

When I read Hero of Time Sequel in the title my first instinct is that the terrible OoT Fan Film is getting a sequel.

That fills me with much dread.

Just...Ugh!
