I pre-ordered ME 2 from Gamestop and just got it 2 hours ago.  I've tried downloading it, and the first disk works fine, when it prompts me to put in the second disk, I press "retry" and insert disk two.  Then it starts to download English.rar and it gets to about 10-11 % complete and then a screen comes up that says "Mass Effect failed to install, A Data Error occurred".  Nothing else, I've tried redownloading at least 4 times but ithe same thing comes up, could somebody please help??

Much appreciated,
GK

Well, thats annoying. I was in que for support, waited 30 minutes, then when I was about to get help it cancelled it, saying no agents were available. XD

Maybe...it didn't say anything about missing files for me, but I'll try manually installing it, I'm not sure what all that stuff was about daemon tools lite was though. XD

It's really simple. If you get daemon tools you wont have to manually extract every single .rar and put it into the proper place (like the forum leader did except he just did the entire cd and then moved the folders).

Copy disc 1 using daemon. Mount virtually using daemon. Put disc 2 in the tray. Let it install. Then put disc 1 back in and play :)

Ok, I'll try that. Atm I'm following the instructions here:

http://support.ea.co...14221&nextlink=

Again, I'll post if anything good happens, and thanks for pointing that thread out torrin, if anyone gets results, let me know! Argh, I hate when this happens with new games...you get all excited, then complete letdown...T_T

I haven't seen that link before. It's kind of like lyssol's way.

Again, if it doesn't work getting daemon and virtually doing it saves time and pain. (at least for me)

Can we do this with a digital download?

I have no clue Orator, but I'm inclined to say no....:/

But what do I know, maybe Torrin will know.

Does the digital download give you a big .exe or like "discs" ?

If it splits it up i'd assume virtually mounting the discs it gives you and doing it that way would work.

Yeah it gives an .exe and I see all the .rar files in the data folder.

It gives a .exe with access to "explore" it?

I'm confused. If it's just a big .exe i'd say redownload it. If it gives you .rar files then you could attempt to do a manual extraction as per other threads.

Well, that ended in failure, I managed to download everything from the second disk, but I don't know how to let it read the files from the folder "disk 2"...time to try the next way.

Well a little more looking around and it just turned out that my McAfree antiviris and firewall was messing with the downloads. Shut it off and did a fresh download and it installed fine.

Almost forgot the other thing since I'm beat. I searched my comp for "Mass Effect 2" and found 6 or so registry files left after I had deleted everything. I manually got rid of those.

I give up, I'm too tired to try other things...best I can hope for is to return and get another, and hope that runs smoothly...ugh.

alrighty. same exact thing happened to me so i went to "custom install" instead of the express or quick one or whatever and i made it have a desktop icon, not the other one, and i made it save to the start menu under mass effect, not mass effect 2, so that when you look for it in all programs it's Mass Effect > Mass Effect 2. Basically it's the same except there aren't two folders right by eachother, you have to go to mass effect 1 to find 2. Hope that works for ya it worked for me and i had the same EXACT problem. I didn't think it would work but it did!

so let me get this straight, just so I can be completely sure Kyle.

First, when it prompts you to choose express or custom install you clicked custom.

Second, it asks you to choose the folder to install it in, I don't know what you chose so I just clicked next.

Third, when it says choose a start menu folder you picked the mass effect 1 one.

And finally, you only made it have a desktop icon.

Am I right?

Kyle did you have Mass Effect 1 installed already? I have the same exact problem but it doesn't seem to work. I already Torrin's method, and that only got me halfway through the install.

I suspect that the contunual error there left everyone nonplussed, unable to understand what the OP was
saying.    The word he / she kept failing to use is "install".

A download is entirely different, of course.  The OP also ignored the SEARCH option.  This error has
happened countless times (not the mistake using the wrong word, the disk failure).  The cause isn't known
to the public, and neither Bioware nor EA has been forthcoming regarding it.  My best guess is some false
tracks have been included on the disk, intended to make disk copying more difficult, and those are why
some DVD drives fail.

You can swaps PCs, swap drives, borrow an external DVD drive, try to copy to folders on your hard drive,
to install from there, copy across your LAN (which is what I had to do), or you can make download
arrangements with the EA store, and then use your hard copy's CD Key as your code to unlock a digital
copy of the game.
