The Architect claimed that he was immune to the Calling that the darkspawn hear that causes them to seek out an Old God, which turns into an Archdemon, triggering a Blight. However, I have a theory that perhaps the Architect isn't as immune to the Calling as he believes. I usually compare his Calling to indoctrination that Reapers use in Mass Effect. For him, being intelligent as he is, the Calling could be more subtle for him that he is unaware of it. That is why he failed to make Urthemiel a disciple. He sought out the Old God, and after locating it, him still being a darkspawn, corrupted it even though it was unintentional.

It's certainly possible (if not probable) that the magisters' free will is an illusion.  Blood seems to be both a circulatory and neural system in DA, so taking in red lyrium is essentially granting its Master direct access to your brain.  Oddly, although I think red lyrium and the blight share the same song (the sundered one) it seems logical that untainted Old Gods would still sing the original song of Creation.  Assuming that's true, I have no idea why that compels darkspawn to seek them out.

One possibility is that the two are essentially magnetic: darkspawn are driven toward the song of the untainted Old Gods, which untainted mortal races don't seem affected by or able to hear, while untainted mortals (particularly Dwarves for some reason- perhaps due to the lyrium in their own blood?) are both able to hear and are compelled by the opposite, the sundered song of red lyrium.

Two split halves trying to become whole?  Possibly, though I'm not sure I like the fit thematically.  It clashes pretty badly with the idea of blight/red lyrium as unnatural cancer, unless you stretch the idea of dwarves-as-immune-system to include the compulsion as something like an inflammatory response.  Not a great fit, given how crazy it makes them.  Also, in DA2 Larius claims Corypheus calls "the dark children and the light, any with taint in their blood" to free him, which would counter that idea... unless it's not actually the tainted Song he was using in that case, but the untainted one.  Which would fit, given that only Wardens seem affected.  That would also explain why Larius describes him as emulating the call of an "Old God" rather than an "Archdemon", though that would still beg the question of how.   Maybe, born human, Corypheus still has both within him no matter how corrupted he might be at this point?

*baffled shrug*   Sorry for the non-answer.  This aspect of lyrium / blight still doesn't make sense to me yet.
